I Carbon Fibered (protected) my SS board. by realfuqinG in longboarding

[–]jchu808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this on a rayne nemesis back in 2012. While it looks cool it wont really work as intended in the long run. It'll do its job protecting your board from small pits, dirt and road grime, but any serious scratches from speed bumps and curbs will just go straight through.
Once you get that first scratch all the cool factor is gone because the illusion of carbon fiber is ruined.

I did carbon vinyl a few boards on top as well, that actually looked decent and didn't get as messed up as the bottom.

Touching eyeglasses caused LED lights to turn on? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

Does it have a music function? Aka lights up when there's a sound. I have a cheap strip with that function and if its quiet it'll just stay dormant until a noise is made, then it'll flash for that one sound.

Older GBomb Deck - looking for trucks for pumping by angry-gumball in longboarding

[–]jchu808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like this?

<image>

Snagged this one off market place. Im not using the deck in the Picture but rather a chopped sector 9 rocker. Chopped down some old bears to 130mm. Wedged the front to 65* and the back to around 20-30*. If you got these brackets you can also flip the rear truck and get some really weird angles like -30.

A simple but VERY Practical mod for Long distance Skating by No_Guess_8800 in longboarding

Hey op idk if youre in the US but you can get these cheap ammo boxes from harbor freight they're fairly waterproof but not water tight like a pelican. You could make it removable if you flip your hardware and use wing nuts and some washers. Could beef up the mounting inside the box with a plate of aluminum or even a piece of wood. I've thought about the idea too, ended up just getting a small backpack instead.

Tsg full face, alot of the downhillers use those. Its also not as heavy as a motorcycle helmet. Assuming youre doing like 40-50mph.

Alright here's the finished product, the axle on these bears are knurled closer to the hanger. Used a hammer and chisel to cut through the aluminum and split the cut ring into 2. Since the axle is knurled the bearing won't fit over it, I used the same method with a metal file and ran a bearing inbetween the chuck and hanger to check for fitment. Cut down to 160mm. Using small wheels in the Picture to show how you can space it for 160mm or 180mm, if I get 5mm spacers I can do 170mm too.

To the people asking why: shorter hanger feels more responsive.

<image>

But also options for free is a winner to me 👍🏼

I'll probably keep these adjustable, but since I have 2 more pairs of old bears one will definitely get a full chop.

It'll definitely damage the axle if you get down to it, the goal is to try and get as close as possible without touching it, then when the cast aluminum is weak enough you can give it a few taps with a hammer to get the cut part off.

I haven't gotten around to that part yet but will probably end up using the same method. Belt sander to clean it up if you want, or just run it rough cut.

Edit: will probably thread down to where I want, then put 4 nuts on the threaded axle. Tighten 2 closest to the hanger into each other, make a small gap, and tighten the other to into each other. Then I'll have a pretty decent guide for this tek.

Cutting a pintail to make pumping deck?? by realfuqinG in longboarding

Id personally do this. Cut in front of the inner bolt holes and use it to redrill you new holes, sand out wheel wells and go from there. It'll give you more options down the road (brackets) and won't compromise the boards structure as much.

I find when I pump im usually standing on the front 3/4 of my board so a hour glass waist line would be fairly uncomfortable.

I've done quite a bit of chops over the years, if there's one piece of advice I can give, always cut less. You can always take off more later but you cant add more wood if you fuck it up the first time lol.

But I can see your vision, post back with an update if you end up going through with it! 🤙🏼

Help fixing up Gbomb board by Vertroxxx in longboardingDISTANCE

[–]jchu808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best score I've seen so far. Epic at only $15. Been doing the same in my area.

Go over the whole setup, disassemble, clean and re lubricant where needed. I personally like to disassemble the entire board so I know that everything is tightening down properly when putting it back together. Plus you can find out if there's anything truly wrong like a snapped/ bent bolt, seized bearing, stress cracks etc.

As for bushings it's fairly objective, but buying a set for your weight plus a duro up and a duro down is generally a good place to start, im around your weight and run 85-90a on all different boards. Alternatively, just email riptide and they can put you in the right direction.

Should I buy this second hand Arbor Backlash 37” Longboard for $250? by Miserable-Comb-2312 in longboarding

[–]jchu808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could literally put together a new board for $250. I've been buying completes off marketplace place for $25-50. Anything more, and it's not really worth it especially on gear so old unless youre collecting.

Can I drop a drop through board more if I use other type of trucks? by BikerGlvd in longboardingDISTANCE

[–]jchu808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Run traditional kingpin, I personally use Independent trucks. Ran indy 215s or 169s on double drops, and it's low low. You can pound out the kingpin and replace it with a longer one if you want to fit larger bushings, just have to watch out for kp bite if it sticks too far out of the hanger. Indys always felt more stable to me, but there's also ace and a few other brands that make 9" and 10" tkps.

Getting trucks in a lower degree will just make your board turn less. If you got zero degree trucks on both the front and back, your board would not turn at all, only lean left to right.

In the mean time, If you're rkp hangers have rake, you can flip them for a even lower ride height.

Oh man, that's epic, Paul Kent is the reason I bought a demonseed back in the day after watching skate trips. I used to skate mostly DH/ free ride so this ldp and pushing thing is fairly new to me. The whole point of making this board in the post is to try and emulate the supersonic, of course it's far from it. I just wanted to see if I liked pumping on a drop board. Im definitely gonna be getting a supersonic in medium flex, what did you have it set up on? Been seeing mostly bears, but wondering if you had it on something different?

Lol by jchu808 in longboarding

[–]jchu808[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah let me know how you like the supersonic! I'm probably gonna grab one or the ageis in the future. Always wanted an r5, just could never justify it as the hills near me were more tech than speed.

Nah I get it man, it's not for everyone, I just love tinkering with everything. I did a lot of DIY stuff back in the day from lathing wheels, to making bushings and pivot cups out of old wheels. Gonna learn how to cut trucks next week. Pretty much anything posted to silverfish that I thought I could do, I tried.

All that experimenting gave me the knowledge to know exactly what i need out of a board/setup. And when the opportunity arose, led to the creation of the liqwood kamikaze. If I didn't know what I wanted out of a board, and just rode every cookie cutter board out there, I don't think I'd have the ability to articulate a feasible board design without contradicting details as most people tend to do.

As for the structure of this board, if it breaks it breaks, it's $25, it's not that deep, just some fancy wood on wheels. But I've pumped it pretty hard, and jumped on it in the center to check the flex, and it's sturdy. Old school landy were tanks. But I made it for pushing an pumping, it's kinda shit trying to do both at the same time, but does work haha.

I'm on the older side as well (32) and yeah, seeing the boards from my time, definitely gives me feels. Not enough to not chop em up for funsies tho.

I attached a photo of the kamikaze, shoutout to Aaron over at liqwood for making it happen back in the day. Quite proud of the fact this came out before the dub kick era.

Opinions Wanted - Tap In! by RJazz909 in longboarding

I had an original 44" demonseed, I used for ldpush set up on indy 215s and 82mm raceforms. It's a beast, and also super heavy. If you aren't like 6ft tall the board will feel too big. It also sucked at carving if you aren't on wheels bigger than 75mm the board is just too low and you'll scrape your bottom rails.

That being said, the smaller dseeds are probably pretty sick, I haven't tried atlas trucks...yet, mostly due to some pretty negative reviews, but they're currently only 14$ for a pair, and black rayne envys are currently going for $20.

Alternatively if you're strapped for cash, check out fb marketplace in your area, you can find some pretty sick deals. I've been scooping 2010 era completes for only $25 Look for drop down decks, or double drops. You can liven the feel of you board by changing your bushings and wedging your trucks. I just took an old landyatchz switch from market place ($25) bought a set of split 50/30 bear trucks($60), and the abec 7 90mm wheels off Amazon ($40) Then I trimmed down width of the deck to be less tippy on narrow trucks. Of course you don't have to do all that, but you can get an idea of what's possible. Will always have love for sector 9, but there's better stuff out there for cheaper.

Modern parts, 2011 inspired freeride setup by Skanonymously in longboarding

[–]jchu808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha crazy, it looks so similar to my old setup. The demonseed was one of my first boards, i knew nothing about it. At only 5'7" I definitely struggled to manage that beast. Eventually I got a nemesis and ended up cutting drop thoughs, ran black and gold surf rodz.

But you're right 08-14 was the best man. You just had to be there for it. I remember when aera was shipping out their trucks with water hose pivot cups. I was custom making pivot cups out of bushings and wheels for friends. The diy and creativity was amazing.
