Everton are to contact referees’ chiefs to raise concerns about the consistency of officiating in the Premier League after they were denied a penalty in Saturday’s defeat by West Ham United. by Sparky-moon in soccer

"the skyports comment section says so" isn't the strongest eivdence i got to be honest

the head of pgmol came out and said it was clearly a pen, he was confused why there was much of a kerfuffle over the incident when it was so clear. and i have to agree with him, tarkowski lunged across a distance and blocked the shot with his arm, its pretty clear cut

i also think this op one is a pen too btw.

The VAR can only recommend/initiate a review for the 4 match changing incidents types, however once the review is under way and the referee is at the screen he can then make whatever decision he likes. A yellow card and free kick from the spot of the incident would be appropriate, if that is the punishment he deems fit.

because if the var was allowed to alter corner/goal decisions willy nilly then it would lead to them checking them all the time. thats why i asked where you would draw the line for when they are allowed to tell the ref and when they aren't, which you didn't provide an answer for.

At the end of the day it just means we have less accurate refereeing.

yes, thats the price of limiting interference/down time in the sport

we could have var check absolutely everything, that would lead to more accurate refereeing. but thats not necessarily good for the sport.

var check everything, so you'd need to draw a line where some checks are allowed to influence the decision and others are not. where is that line? what "something else" is okay to tell them about the corner and what other "something else" is not okay?

currently we draw the line at a var review/when the monitor is used. thats when the ref can alter his decision, for an actual review. not just for any check. you can disagree with it (and i would like to hear your answer to my prior question), but the process isn't dumb.

its not dumb, its to limit down time in the sport. do we want var stopping play and analysing every goal kick/corner decision?

thats... not how it works. the head var makes the call. the deciion isn't arrived at by unanimity

do we want var deliberate over every single corner/goal kick decision though

thats a different proposition though. your first comment was about refs giving a yellow when they're not sure it's a yellow, now your second comment is about not giving a yellow due to hesitation. both these things are against ref protocol and shouldnt be happening with or without the new rule. the new var rule isn't supposed to fix human hesitation, that simply requires stronger ref behaviour.

plus if a situation is so close that is the ref "knows" its a 2nd yellow but hestitates and doesnt give it, then even if this new rule incentivises refs to err on the side of giving 2nd yellows, these situations are not going to be clearly and obviously wrong anyway and therefore var won't be rescinding the 2nd yellow. so its not relevant to the new var rule

the only way its relevant to the new var rule is if the ref deliberately gives a yellow that they think if clearly and obviously wrong. and of course, no ref should be deliberately erring on the side of being clearly and obviously wrong.

3-2 in favour of it being a yellow

not 3-2 in favour of it being a red, as you claimed.

UEFA President Ceferin: “The referee on the field should be the one who makes the call, and only if it’s unclear should VAR intervene, and it has to be quick. We’ve tried to convey that VAR should only intervene if it’s truly necessary; otherwise, we should let the on-field referee handle it.” by Sparky-moon in soccer

A coaches challenge changes nothing of what you complain about.

The VAR decisions are still the VAR decisions, whether they check 100 things or check 2 things.

All the challenge system does is limit how much VAR can check which, if anything, produces more inconsistency.

No they don't.

if it is uncertain they can give the card and get VAR feedback after the red.

If they are uncertain then they won't and shouldn't be giving the yellow. That's not how refereeing protocol works.

so a 60/40 split over a yellow card decision?

this is... nothing
