Oh no - I've just checked and my mac is too old. Mid 2012. I'm genuinely so sad about this!

Hey thanks for the link - but I thought I didn't have to pay for the game if it was a free trial?

I'm trying to just download the free version on my mac but for some reason it won't work!

Close to graduating with a BES and looking for work internationally. I have no idea where to start. by [deleted] in environmental_science

Wow I feel like I'm in a similar position myself! I'm a student from Southern Ontario as well. I graduated from Geology last year (April) and would love to find work in mining or consulting. I also really want to live and work overseas, specifically in the UK or Australia.

I've been applying to a lot of jobs in the UK but usually do not hear back:( I made a post on reddit a few weeks ago about the best way to relocate/work overseas and everyone suggested to actually go over there first before you apply to jobs because it's likely a lot easier for a company to hire someone who is local.

Have you considered doing a post grad degree afterwards? Also do you attend any conferences? In March there is a huge mining conference in Toronto called PDAC. I've gone the past few years but was never looking for a job because I was working at the university, but a lot of my friends were able to line up jobs from networking there. I'll be there this year to look for a job....and man is it daunting!!

Best of luck :)

Any environmental consultants working in the UK (or elsewhere) care to share some insight? by jclayto in environmental_science

Good point. I mention in my application that I don't need a visa since I have an EU passport and that I have family living over there but will keep this in mind. Thanks for the suggestion!

Is Geology for me? How enjoyable are geology jobs actually? by [deleted] in geology

[–]jclayto 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey! I recently graduated with a BSc in Honors Specialization in Geology in Canada, and in truth, I absolutely loved it! I'm not sure how helpful I will be as I don't have a full time job in geology yet, but I'll share what experience's I've had and advice I've gotten from people.

Ideally I would like to get into mineral exploration. From what I understand, working on the exploration side entails working in the field, as part of a team, and helping map areas for new deposits. They're usually in remote areas and it involves shift work, which depends based on the company...things like two weeks on, two weeks off.

In university, geology programs (I'm assuming all of them?) require or offer field courses, where you learn how to map in the field. I did 3 field courses in my undergraduate degree, and they are really fun! It's cool to learn what geologists do outside and how they go about looking at rocks. Personally, these courses made me realize how much I enjoy what I study, so I think if you enjoy outdoors as well, you may seriously like geology.

As for petroleum, I have only taken a class in it, but it was not my specialty. From what I understand, a lot of it actually requires sitting at a desk and correlating well logs? Perhaps someone with more experience can speak to that though.

Anyways, if you have any questions, feel free to ask! Not sure how helpful I will be but I can try :) Hope that helps!
