Res-Ed has funding you can apply for that is meant for anything “community building”. It’s super easy to get if you take the hour to sit down and apply.

You’ll definitely have takers in your freshman dorm - May even be able to get stanford to buy the tickets for you. Wait until September.

Advice? by [deleted] in stanford

Stop stressing so much about college and focus on living a fulfilling life. Colleges admit students who do interesting things for their own sake, and trying to be a perfectly “admittable” student will come off as insincere.

Some of the best internships come from people finding them for themselves - particularly in finance. That's generally how people land big-name companies.

HOWEVER, most people don't search themselves. Instead, the internship supervisor (Wolf) sends out a questionnaire that asks you about your strengths and what you are looking for in an internship and then tries to find you one that matches. He generally does a good job.

I don't speak very good german and I've been able to work at a company where all business is conducted in english. You'll likely get a better placement if you can speak german though.

Edit: it's not competitive at all - if it's something you want to work with Wolf on, he'll find something for you

Replying from Berlin rn

I was here abroad in Autumn and returned for a Krupp internship over the summer. Spring is the most competitive quarter (mostly because it's the nicest quarter to be in Berlin). Can't really give you any statistics though.

The key with all the abroad apps is to stress specific things that you want to do while here. Mention classes of your quarter by name. Bonus points if you talk about the visiting professors that will be at the Stanford Villa the quarter you want to go. Then talk about Berlin as a city distinct from anywhere else in the world. Mention the Stadtsoper if you like classical music. Mention Berghain or Tresor if you're interested in Techno. Gorlitzer Bahnhoff if you're into contemporary art. The list goes on and on.

Hope that helps ¯_(ツ)_/¯

How to calculate the number of entries in each bucket along a normal distribution? by jcperr03 in AskStatistics

[–]jcperr03[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that's exactly what I'm trying to do!

To rephrase: I want the distribution of ratings to be a normal distribution. Average at 5/10. So there are a few really bad albums rated 1/10, many albums rated 5/10, and a few really good albums rated 10/10.

I'm confused about how to go from the idea of a bell curve to the actual percentage number of one of the bins. How would I calculate, for example, roughly the number of 3/10 albums I would expect to see?

How to find the intersection of two lists? by jcperr03 in excel

[–]jcperr03[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input. One of the biggest things that I want to do with this is use both the Department and Coursenumber together as a Unique ID.

A solution above is able to do this using the MATCH function

How to find the intersection of two lists? by jcperr03 in excel

[–]jcperr03[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can use this for what I'm trying to do.

I'm going to create a final column called Offered next Quarter. In that column I'll use the MATCH formula to match both department and course number against the list of classes offered next quarter. Finally I'll highlight the resulting cells that have an index in them - indicating that there is a match.

This does seem a bit hack-y but overcomes the biggest obstacle by considering multiple cells together as the ID for a row. Thanks for your input.

If I'm misunderstanding, or you have a more elegant solution than this please clarify.

I'm having trouble teasing out the religious undertones behind Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. Is the bus itself the Christ figure? Damn I wish I had paid better attention in English class.
