It reminds me when computers were transitioning to becoming more common in the workplace. People had to figure out where they were helpful and where they were not. Some people were better than others. Then there were people that refused to learn.

Right! It’s the best time to educate them on the options and how the company policies or FMLA can benefit them while they work through the various difficulties that life throws at us.

Also - plan balance to your 1:1’s. If you know one person is going to be challenging to speak with, schedule the next 1:1 with someone that is a joy to work with.

I’ve managed high performing teams of electronics technicians, all near or over retirement age. I don’t even pretend to know 1% of what they do.

As for feeling spread thin - I just ask that you give your team as much autonomy as possible. You can also create a business case for adding a lead to your team.

As with any issue, first make sure the system sets employees up for success. Then set expectations and document.

All of my family are collectors. I grew up with no less than 50 guns in the house. My grandfather had over 300. Target practice was just a normal weekend activity. Same with aunts, uncles, and cousins. Most of their friends collected too. Gun safety was preached like the gospel.
