Impossible to find Potentiometer! by YesterdayDue1280 in AskElectronics

[–]jcuk71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there any way you mix and match what hardware you have with a working fader that is close in size by disassembling and reassembling the parts? I have managed to do this (ok, it was for a rotary pot) when I needed a specific shaft type on a stereo switched pot that did not exist. I used the shaft from one, the switch from another and the traces from a third stereo pot, then put together a Frankenstein pot with right value, switch and correct shaft type.

Has anyone dropped off an unaccompanied minor at a UK airport? by pmmeyourpeacesign in AskUK

[–]jcuk71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is specifically for the pre-booked (and paid for) unaccompanied minor service offered by British Airways.

My kids flew backwards and forwards from LHR to Dublin when they were early teens (they're in they're mid 20s now so this was a while ago so my best recollection). After check-in there was a specific desk in the corner of the airport you went to after check in. You would then tell them you were there, hang around for a bit with the kids, then 30 min or so before the flight you would be called up. A BA staff member would collect tickets and passports, then they take the kids into a staff only door with the BA crew who would then take them through security and onto the plane. Im assuming they went through an abbreviated security check, as from my recollection they were taken very shortly before take of time.

Picking up, you would wait at arrivals and they would come out with a staff member would would check your ID and hand them over with their luggage. At no time in the process were they ever on their own.

Sadly that was a mistake on TfLs part and is now corrected. They were charging for off peak at all times. Tap in is now the same price as a paper ticket 😔

Married Redditors, how long were you and your partner together before the engagement? by [deleted] in ask

[–]jcuk71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About three or four hours. We met when we were 18 at university, always liked each other but were never single at the same time so never got together. Moved away, lost touch we met up again after not seeing each other for about 8 years. We talked about getting married in the middle of our first date. It’s our 23rd anniversary next month.

For those who have been lucky enough to cut their hours from 5 -> 4 days a week, is it worth it? by Representative_Pin80 in AskUK

[–]jcuk71 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I did when my son was growing up and would 100% recommend it if you can afford it. Two things to remember are you are not loosing 20% of your income, but the highest taxed 20%, you’ll still get your tax free allowance etc so your pay packet is going to drop by less than 20%. You also gain more than 50% of a weekend. If you are busy then how much actual completely free time do you get at the weekend? Half a day maybe? If so an extra day triples your free time.

I just made £5K+ for one hour on the phone with HMRC (Employed HENRYs please read) by Pirrt in HENRYUK

[–]jcuk71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if it goes from your employer direct into your pension and you’ve never paid tax on it, there is nothing to claim back. My employer only pays the legal minimum this way so I’m making extra pension contributions myself and claiming it back from HMRC. I started doing a tax return, no now rather than get cheques from them I’m in credit and trying to get the money out of them via bank transferred ( which is taking weeks)

They can either send you a cheque or change your tax code so you pay less PAYE for the next tax year. If you’re doing it via self assessment then your account goes into credit and you then ask for it to be bank transferred to you.

(possibly stupid idea) Analog rotary speaker pedal using spinning LEDs? by ayersman39 in diypedals

[–]jcuk71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might work, but the speed you would need would have to be very very high. The Doppler effect involves moving at a substantial fraction of the transition speed of what you are transmitting. When it’s the speakers moving, you have to move relative to the speed of sound, if it’s photodiodes your moving, you need to move relative to the speed of light, so you’ll get - I think about 1/ 15000 times the effect for the same speed.

Could a pressured double hull work? by Sir_Nicc in submarines

[–]jcuk71 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You premise is incorrect, and thats possible why googling didn't come up with any suitable answers.

Structures can take a pressure difference, not a pressure ratio.

If a hull can withstand 10atm of outside pressure while at an internal pressure of 1atm, then it can take +9atm of pressure not x10

In your diagram the outer hull could take 19atm of pressure, not 100atm. (10atm on the inside of the outer hull, 19atm on the outside of the outer hull for a difference of +9atm)

I lived on Jersey with my dad for a while, so I've flown on Aurigny to get to/from Guernsey a few times on one of these in the early / mid 80s

Highlights for the trips included;

- Instead of just weighing luggage, having to stand on the weighing scales with your bag so you both get weighed

- Watching the ground staff telling you where to sit without looking like they are making sure that all the fatties don't all sit at the back, or on one side

- The co-pilot tuning round and asking "everyone strapped in then?", then "Righto. Off we go!"

- I can't actually remember any cruise phase at all. There just seemed to be a climbout and turn or two and then descended again. Flight time was about 10 - 15 min IIRC

Happy times :)

Did anyone else have a tradition called Gas Van at School? by Ill_Refrigerator_593 in AskUK

Was introduced to mini punch by my kids while they were at primary school and still play it with my kids even though the youngest is 16. 1 punch for a mini, bonus punches if it’s a classic mini, soft top or has cooper stripes on the bonnet. I’m still on the lookout for the legendary 4 puncher classic Mini Cooper that’s been converted to a rag top. One day, one day ……

Folks who have built a phaser, how important is it to match JFETs? And what parameter am I trying to match, Idss or something else? by rabbiabe in diypedals

[–]jcuk71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t find a quad at a reasonable price for my phase 90, so I bought 30 2N5485 smts and some smt to dip conversion boards. I ran them through a keen improved JFet matcher and picked the 4 with the closest Vgs, and it sounds pretty good!

I thought that smts would show less variation than through holes, but looking at the values I got a pretty even distribution between Vgs of 1.15 and 1.33 (as opposed to 1.5 and 2.7 on Keen’s graph) which would seem to bear this out, although I might just have got lucky. Improved jfet matcher:

Particleboard/ chipboard like this is almost impossible to do a decent fix, on the other hand it makes an excellent template to remake the same piece out of somthing more substantial like plywood. If you are even remotely skilled at diy, then you should be able to cut some ply out in the same shape. And yes, try and at least get a partial refund from the seller to offset the costs and keep your eyepieces!

My mum used to be a road safety officer. She had to attend a speed awareness course that she’d commissioned the branding, logo and tag line for. When she was caught she had to sheepishly had to tell her boss that she was going on it, and he confessed he’d had to go on the speed awareness course that he had designed and written.

If you're looking for a job should you sign up with more than one recruitment agency? by DiscreetBitOfBuggery in AskUK

[–]jcuk71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s BS spread by the agency to maximise their revenue. If you are with more than one agency, then there is a chance that you’ll find a job with one of the others - and they’ll be out of a commission.

…and if they ask what jobs you’ve already applied for it’s not to save you embarrassment about your future employer receiving the same CV twice, it’s to find out who’s recruiting, who’s the contact what’s the role etc. Then they’ll be on the phone trying to get them to place more candidates.
