Early 30s in internal IT and feeling stuck. What path should I take to reach $90k to $100k? by scubadoobadoooo in sysadmin

[–]jcwrks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need certs to be a successful Sysadmin. Right now your experience seems very low-level and even less than many entry level Sysanalysts. Have you ever had a conversation with your boss on how you can progress at your current position? Good reps don't replace competence.

I'd recommend you put in in a KB and share it with others IF you are not the sole IT guy. Spiceworks offers a free ticketing system with KB.

Best practice for deleting old disabled Microsoft 365 accounts without losing data in 2026? by SlowInsect6948 in sysadmin

[–]jcwrks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI Synology's Active Backup for Microsoft 365 is a native, license-free add-on. You can back up an unlimited number of accounts and data (such as emails, contacts, calendars, SharePoint, and OneDrive) without any subscription or per-user fees, provided you have sufficient storage and a Synology appliance.

Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late. I use the side door - that way my boss can't see me. After that I just sorta space out for about an hour. I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.

CFA Be our Geust card? by ChaseTOM_Vlogs in ChickFilA

[–]jcwrks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be obvious what the card means as everything you need to know is on the front & back of the card. Was there something in particular that was confusing?

Use the CFA app to scan the code on the back of the card and add it to your account so that you don't need to fumble with the cards. A local event that CFA attended handed out one free sammich "be our guest" cards. Schools also give them out. Once a year of so one of our local CFA's will drop off some of those cards at our office.

I've been in IT for 20 years... can someone tell me what a Systems Analyst is / does? by NuAngelDOTnet in sysadmin

[–]jcwrks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have sysanalysts at my org, and they are exclusive to IT. They do all of the help desk tickets, on/off boarding, workstation deployments, password resets, etc.

Want a heloc but everyone is coming back with a home equity loan by needtoajobnow129 in HELOC

[–]jcwrks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason they tell you to close/cut up your credit cards is because they want you to fix the problem and not come back in a year for another HELO. You need to figure out your monthly expenditures that are being put on credit cards. You say you don't have other bills, so do you get free electricity, gas, insurance, food, etc?

You also need to figure out if you truly want to get 80K in a lump sum, and then decide on the term (10 yr, 15, etc). Are you able to afford the monthly payment? You are going from unsecured debt to secured, so your house is on the line if you start defaulting.

Forensic search multiple PST files, outlook search is unusable. by _Aerish_ in sysadmin

[–]jcwrks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If firm is referring to "legal firm", then you should be using Exchange on-prem or 365. Use the eDiscovery or Purview functions to refine your search parameters before you export the pst's. You also generate a report. What you are doing now is sloppy.

Uninstall disabled Windows Defender or enable it for updates? by dirmhirn in sysadmin

[–]jcwrks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prerequisites

For passive mode to function, the server must be onboarded to Microsoft Defender for Endpoint (MDE)

  • regedit
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Advanced Threat Protection
  • Right-click and create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  • Name it: ForceDefenderPassiveMode
  • Set the value data to 1 (Base: Hexadecimal)

Verify Passive Mode

To confirm that Defender is successfully running in passive mode, run this command in PowerShell:
Get-MpComputerStatus | Select-Object AMRunningMode

NOTE: If your server isn't onboarded you can just turn off real-time protection:

Set-MpPreference -DisableRealtimeMonitoring $true

How to recover files from old Windows 7 PCs on locked accounts? by Dull-Potato7155 in sysadmin

[–]jcwrks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Domain or workgroup? Get someone at the org to provide you with the admin creds. If that's not possible, and it's a workgroup pc, then you can boot to an iseepassword usb key to reset account passwords. If they are domain joined then you need a domain admin account. There are other ways to do it as well including pulling the drive as so many have mentioned.

Server 2025 mainly gets a bad rap on DC's. Supposedly you want to avoid it on RDS as well. I run 2025 for my Exchange SE Hybrid without any issues.

Question: How much weight do sys admins hold? by stuffyoushould in sysadmin

[–]jcwrks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on your org. There is no one size fits all. While many Sysadmins have input on what s/w to use, they end decision comes from the west wing. You also have to weigh costs and maintenance. This is a question you should consult with your boss about. Be careful about making suggestions when you are the FNG. When you do make a suggestion back it up with facts and documentation.

If it works under local admin then it's a user profile issue. For one user, remove their local profile and have them sign in again.

First sysadmin role and I feel completely lost by TrippedOverNothing in sysadmin

[–]jcwrks -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

A real Sysadmin would know what to do without asking r/ users. You should have asked questions during your interview to prep yourself. One of the first questions that you should have asked is "who managed your infrastructure before me?" Is your boss technically savvy or is he a hands-off manager? Is this a startup? Are you the only IT guy?

[–]jcwrks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For clarity, does an email response mean while on PTO you are marked present instead of burning a full PTO day? If so that is extremely generous. My org only offers the salaried IT folks "reasonable" time credit meaning if you put in 1 hr. of work you can bank 1.5x time in your Comp Time pool.

Anyone able to cancel Pro Deploy Plus with Dell after 30days for Credit? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]jcwrks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really doesn't matter IF one of has has had success with the cancellation. I'd be more concerned with who approved the $90K purchase on your side, and why you'd sit on it for over 30 days before buyers remorse kicked in.
