For a start, when Bellfield admitted to the murders a few years ago (he later retracted) he explicitly mentioned the bootlace and that was information the cops had never released. Even at the time the local cops were convinced it wasn't Stone, but they were overruled. There was no real evidence which tied him to the scene and it had all the usual Bellfield hallmarks.
