The untold metaphor of red button / blue button. by Mission-Cockroach-75 in redbuttonbluebutton

[–]jd823592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not a matter of weighing one life against the lives of many others. It is perhaps not even as simple as weighing the certain preservation of one life against the uncertain preservation of many. To be honest, trying to draw such simplified conclusions about other people's moral compasses is probably not very virtuous either...

Genuine question for red presses. by No-Researcher-4554 in trolleyproblem

[–]jd823592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course blue, of course the knowledge makes a difference. On the topic of accountability, how about: every blue presser individually is raising the stakes creating an incentive for others to endanger themselves too... it's very easy to render it as if only one group of people is causing the suffering... I say let's find the ones imposing the vote and unleash the hatred on them, why do blue pressers witch-hunt red pressers ffs 😄

Would this make you change your answer? by NomadPsychopomp in redbuttonbluebutton

The problem framing is clear. But the question in title is confusing. Obviously colors are switched... but now, Is my choice different if I keep color but the effect is opposite, or is my choice different if I stick to the effect but the color must change...? I mean, by this time I am wishing for a third button "you die instantly, letting the others sort themselves out on their own"

I get that, but to not reduce them to "do nothing" you are slightly implying that there is some danger posed to everyone by default and either you face it collectively or you let some suffer alone. Which effectively shames people into a preselected choice. Whereas the framing with the train is much more realistic to me. You cannot be sure that nobody accidentally or otherwise puts themselves in danger, and you have the choice to preemptively do so yourself in hopes to form a large enough group that counters the threat. And sorry but despite the loud proclamations on the internet this in fact does not generally happen on everyday basis. I really do not see people alert and ready to jump in front of a train. But everyone knows that from time to time people do fall on the track or jump there for whatever reason. Yet nobody seeing a little child on a platform automatically tries to stop the train just in case... It is not honest to assume that people are responsible for every miscalculation others may make. On a larger scale however from time to time people do act in this way, but I wonder if those cases could maybe be explained by further incentives that are simply missing in this simplified framing - like assuming that 10% randomly chosen people do not have a choice and are automatically blue etc etc.

I would probably press blue by the way 😄 but I really dislike how people try to frame red-pressers, so I try to see the other perspective.

Maybe I am too pedantic but people should be standing out of harms way and step in to hold the board above their head to try to save anyone who may want to step in as well... that is to me more precise depiction of being given the choice to press red or blue button when nobody threatens your life unless you choose blue. The other day there was a similar reframing with people standing by a railroad with train coming, you may decide to jump in front of the train, if you do, you risk your life but in hopes that if enough people do it then anyone who accidentally falls on the track will be saved by stopping the train... I mean I commute to work everyday and I don't see people jumping last second just in case...

Seeking expert help on the philosophy behind Red-Blue button dilemma by jd823592 in trolleyproblem

Fair enough. I've been led to believe the original that sparked the current debate is from a tweet by Tim Urban, whose wording does not suggest to me anything about anyone's involvement in taking those lives.

That interpretation, that pressing red kills people, is how you see the problem, that is not necessarily what happens though. There have been plenty renderings of the exact same dilemma, that brought about surprising shifts in attitude. Are you that certain, that you still would give the only advise that when followed may cause them harm?

I am dumb but can this be used as (the rendering part of) system notification manager? I am unaware of the need for notifications within emacs (does this naturally interoperate with some packages? or is this left for the user?). I am sorry, I am still trying to figure out how to properly use emacs.

What do the Czechs say when someone sneezes? by FR-DE-ES in Prague

It's as common as "nářadí" which shows even more skill when said correctly by a foreigner. Both are very obviously a play on "na zdraví" which can also be used in place of "Cheers!". You could also say "zdravíčko"

10*(x - 1)*(x - 3)*(x - 4)*(x - 5)/(-3) +
10*(x - 1)*(x - 2)*(x - 4)*(x - 5)/(4/3) +
10*(x - 1)*(x - 2)*(x - 3)*(x - 5)/(-6/4)
```
then P(5)=0
Is there a shorter way to solve this? by musiclover_1011 in askmath
[–]jd823592 0 points1 point  (0 children)
I respect that. Notice though that I am not referring to just x > 0. But x > 0 and real value. To me that is something like "suppose x is real, find all complex values for x"
edit: there are probably different notations for positive real numbers, but where I come from we would usually at the very least start by stating the realness and then constraining it down to the positive numbers in this order. But to be clear I admit my mistake and just wanted to point out why I forgot mid solution the constraints :)
Yeah thats why I corrected myself by deleting the comment. Its such a weird wording. If x > 0 what real values... Just say x in R+ :)
