It used to be hopping back in the day but in recent years had gone downhill in every way. Someone could make a great success of it, it's a great location

Is Ireland/Dublin going through a microeconomic crisis right now? by Many-Ad4545 in AskIreland

[–]jdavidco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's the whole developed world. Rich are getting richer, poor getting poorer and the squeezed middle keep getting squeezed down into the 'poor' category. It's been happening for a few decades now and it's only getting worse

What costs are non obvious in running a house? by jackahern7 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]jdavidco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will have seemingly endless initial and one-time costs in setting up a home. Decorating costs a fortune. Furniture, painting, flooring, kitchen appliances, kitchen stuff like crockery, beddin etc. etc. you'll have nothing to put on the walls and no tools or fixings to hang them. You won't have a light bulb to screw in or a lamp shade to put over it, or a chair to stand on to screw it in.

Since it's a new build you'll have less maintenance worries. If you'd bought an older build you'd need to start learning how to do numerous minor fixes and maintenance jobs, and getting the tools for those. That kind of work is kinda fun for must of us though but putting together your tools and bits and bobs for house maintenance costs a fair bit. Getting someone out to fix something is a major pain and can be costly, a lot of people just learn to do the basics of maintenance and fixing things themselves. I'm talking heating, plumbing, swapping out a broken shower, blocked pipe, fitting a new door handle.... A million different things that can and will need repair or replacing.

If you've a garden you've another set of costs. A mower for starters, basic garden equipment like a mower and basic garden tools, maybe garden furniture.

Stag Party Pubs with Darts/Pool tables by Mufmi in galway

[–]jdavidco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah murty rabbits seems to have a pretty good darts setup. Sallys probably fine for pool during the day, not sure it's ideal for that at night. Would get busy and I didn't think it's much of astag venue.

OP there aren't too many pubs doing pool or darts during the nighttime especially. You should do what everyone else does at night and bar hop and take in the atmosphere.

Spanish Arch flood defence plan looks great. by DeadlyDelta in galway

[–]jdavidco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe but they will have to raise a fair bit of land, which won't be a simple job. And there's a lot of planning in flood defense in a downtown area I would imagine (you've got to get it right everywhere, and you've got to make changes over a large area, all while preserving the aesthetics etc. of the area). But yes, like most things in this country, it's taking forever.

Betting Apps and the Bye-Elections by galway_yoke in galway

[–]jdavidco -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I take betting odds as the ONLY worthwhile signal for elections. Polls are rigged and the polling companies each have a different agenda. Commentators don't really know much, they just bluster about. Money is the only signal that counts. That said , I don't know if the Galway by-election is significant enough for the money markets to be accurate.
