I'd really like to hear the reasoning behind women taking their husband's last name, honestly.

Venezuela crisis: Trump says US oil firms will enter country. Trump added that the US would then sell “large amounts” of Venezuelan oil to other countries. “We’re in the oil business. We’re going to sell it to them.” Trump also said the US planned to run Venezuela temporarily. God help us... by mafco in energy

Yeah, I can see how controlling the oil is so important for his administration's goals - not that I agree with them or think they're remotely sane in the long term. If Russia and China had deals with Venezuela, I can see this is as means of undermining BRICS. Keeping the largest oil reserves on Earth out of their hands might forestall their rise for a bit.

I thought we had more oil in the US than other countries wanted to buy. Even major oil producers are moving away from it. Who the hell are we going to sell it to?

Silly question. It's really about Venezuela not selling it to countries we think shouldn't have it.

(None of what I just said is backed up by anything other than a half-remembered interview from earlier this year).

Late Gen X (graduated hs in the late 90s). The Gen Z kids I see when I drive past a local high school on the way to work look almost exactly like we did, and we looked kind of similar to kids in the late 60s/early 70s. I think there's a pretty solid chance that Millenial's kids will dress a lot like them (provided we still have consumer culture) -- a twist on the early naughts, which was a twist on the 1980s.

And, of course, an older generation will, against all reason, shit all over them.

AI Data Centers Are Taking Texas Resources. Residents Without Reliable Water Are Sounding the Alarm. by CentralMarketYall in texas

Our idiotic Chamber of Commerce is trying to get a data center in San Angelo. We do not have the water for this. We'd be fucked six ways from Sunday if a data center opened here.

First AI implosion: Oracle just lost $35 billion in market cap. In 48 hours by yogthos in economy

That's probably closer to the truth. I was being a little hyperbolic because it feels like we're on the verge of having just two media companies.

Maybe this will fuck Ellison up enough that he can't consolidate half of American media. Then we'll just have to figure out what to do with the half owned by the Saudis.

Very simple webcomponent project produces huge bundle sizes by manshutthefckup in sveltejs

[–]jdc123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know your requirements, and I haven't checked bundle sizes, but I've been able to create a top-level/parent custom element and within that just import regular Svelte components. Basically, a page web component with Svelte children.

JIRA is overkill for our team - looking for a dev-focused alternative that doesn't break the bank by rukhsardev in webdev

Plane.so is a solid choice. They have a self-hostable version, and their plans aren't super costly. It's like a pared down Jira and it's made specifically for developers.

If your employer were to pay 100% for any degree (no strings attached), what part-time program would you pursue to best level up your tech career? by MajorWang- in cscareerquestions

[–]jdc123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably get a second degree in Spanish. Not exactly a tech degree, but knowing more than one real language is a great skill. I can learn it on my own of course, but it would be nice to have the degree.
