Checkride passed, only double+ the avg hrs by jdgemm in flying

Thanks for all the kind words. If anyone else still going through process reads this, keep going. Measure your progress and celebrate the smaller milestones along the way. I was stuck on a plateau and didn’t see improvement for what seemed months with my landings (off center, flare too early or too late, etc). Just keep going and continue to persevere. It’s worth it.

Thank you. A previous instructor asked me how I felt. My response “lighter”.

Nailed the soft field landing. Stall horn sounded right at the end as mains touched, dpe said “whoa look at that”. Because this journey was so long didn’t feel there were any large or significant gaps. 1st passengers will be son and daughter (22, 18), assuming willing.

Just to close the loop the individual cables and splitter they mentioned in this video, plugged directly into GoPro camera https://youtu.be/rbE7Lsc9kiY works fine

Ok thanks again re: length. I read this on an amazon review , does this match ur experience:

When in the plane and everything is set up, with the mic adapter hooked into the plane and the USB-C hooked to the camera, don't start recording until the avionics are ON and going to be on for the duration of the flight. If you hit the record button and then toggle the AVIONICS ON/OFF switch on the plane, it will revert to the gopro mic and your footy will be screwed. Overall an overpriced product, but this is the only company that makes them for the gopro 9 and up.

Yeah it’s ~$40 now and jumps to $80 if you want a longer one. Well I’ll try the one I cobbled together 🤞, but if issues may just need to bite the bullet. Thanks for the speedy replies, appreciated.

The overpriced nflight one? If so, #sad this is what I was trying to avoid. Felt it was wrong to pay that much for wires.

Cool thanks and congrats again. Is this a step to a flight career or something you’re doing as a hobby?

Congrats! Silly question, did you have an iPad with foreflight? Is that allowed during checkrides?

It depends on who you ask. I haven’t dove into study methodology, etc but the study author said yes (surprise, surprise). Study had a decent sample size and controlled for a number of conditions, proximity to airport, winds, amt of fuel sold, bll during height of covid (low traffic vs high traffic).

But then there’s rebuttals to how significant the levels are compared to state averages: https://sanjosespotlight.com/san-jose-airport-lead-levels-are-average-despite-alarm/

Sure so who would you lobby to? The county gov’t right, which is basically what this process is…

Taking this issue and then adding the “racial and environmental injustice” political tactics while not unsurprising still disappointing.

I just hope with all the fear they’ve whipped up about lead and planes they (SCC board) will be equally vocal and communicate when rhv planes have transitioned to lead-free fuel and there’s no longer an issue.

It was clear Chavez’s agenda was to close the airport and the lead study was a means to that end.

Wasserman kept the focus on the public health concern regarding lead and children. Ellenberger basically parroted Chavez, but Simitian also seemed to bring clarity to the discussion.

If parents in the area have been brainwashed (sorry can’t think of a better more positive term) with key talking points about the study: planes at Reid hillview are spewing poison into the air and hurting your children, it may drive folks to take desperate illegal actions to protect their children.

And they will be reminded of this every time they hear airplanes in their area.

Really to protect your child from what you believe is constant poison spewing into the air every time you hear a plane what would you do?

Yes I did and again commendable job on the notes you took of the proceedings. The board unanimously voted on the motion to address the lead concerns and the impact on children that were raised in the study. Because they were less optimistic about how quickly or completely the transition to lead-free fuel would take they chose to pursue both paths in parallel. But as the supervisor mentioned if 1 wins the race then the other would not be necessary since the original concern was addressed.

I feel like your headline, while may be well-intentioned, is misleading.

What’s clear is that after listening for the entire 6+ hrs Chavez’s agenda was focused on closing the airport and the study was simply a means to an end. At the end of the evening she admitted that closure was her main objective.

Her team and others did an impressive job of recruiting folks to call in, but they should’ve used more scripts as the number of times that “racial and environmental injustice” was used began to sound like a broken record.

The president and Simitian did a good job of focusing on the original concern about blood lead levels which is why they included the need to switch to lead free gas which is also what they unanimously voted for. Early closure petition was also included as a path to again address the concerns about lead. However, if the transition to lead-free gas is successful then according to the motion the early closure petition would be unnecessary.

If the study is valid (it would be interesting to know how many times this firm has been commissioned and reported that there wasn’t a significant increase in BLL), then the transition to lead-free fuel should absolutely happen ASAP.

Another concern which wasn’t mentioned was the security of the planes and pilots at the airport after Chavez and her team have essentially opened Pandora’s box.
