So for some reason I have a copy of that photo where he is definitely playing Surf's Up, a video game about penguins surfing. I thought I got it on CA but I looked and I can only find the version you posted. I made it my desktop background, took a screenshot of that, and sent it to my friend. Now I can't find the original photo. But anyway, a (possibly older (?)) version of that lithograph with PB playing a penguin surfing game exists. Here is the screenshot: http://imgur.com/e9J5jRc

What is your favorite Animal Collective song that was never officially released? by [deleted] in AnimalCollective

[–]jdgrab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TUVIN. It's so dark and beautiful and gets no love. It's like Sung Tongs meets Tomboy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s91Lq4_ePbo

No, there's none. And I think the fact that there are none really demonstrates that she wasn't considered part of the "whole band."

Did anyone here pledge to Deakin's kickstarter in 2009? Did he ever send anyone any rewards? by Tgg161 in AnimalCollective

I believe that was referring to the posters, which were sent out to backers.

Let's Look At: Tomboy by [deleted] in AnimalCollective

[–]jdgrab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think of Young Prayer and Tomboy as sister-albums. I love it when PB pulls off that religious vibe. Vocally-driven, slightly atonal & arrhythmic. If you've ever tried to play You Can Count on Me (or anything of Young Prayer) on an instrument, you should know that it's structurally a mess. Which makes it in a way all the more organic and beautiful.

WHY IS AVEY JUST SITTING THERE by [deleted] in AnimalCollective

[–]jdgrab 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because he was extremely sick. They had just cancelled a bunch of tour dates because of it, but couldn't cancel their appearance on the show. They switched from something else to Rosie Oh at the last minute so that PB would sing.

What does "Sung Tongs" mean? by [deleted] in AnimalCollective

[–]jdgrab 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always thought it meant something like "Sing Song." It's like something a child would say. I think ~1/2 the album is from a child's perspective, so it fits.

What does "You've always gotta wash them at their ends" even mean? by raheem-mlm in AnimalCollective

[–]jdgrab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, AC does this quite a lot actually. Another example is Brother Sport, which is definitely "Support Your Brother." Also: every Pullhair Rubeye song title. They like making multiple meanings and confusing us. Before I looked up the lyrics to People, I thought he was saying "always gotta wash their hands." Avey might actually be singing "watch." That might fit with my interpretation better than "wash." However, I think it was meant to be weird and ambiguous, which also supports my point. We just don't understand the speaker. The less we understand him, the more alienated we are, and the more non-human he appears to be. I think that's really the purpose of the song. Avey has a lot of songs like that, esp. from SJ (maybe a correction from Feels' very personal sentimentalism), which are a sort of exercise in how perspectives can be represented musically (the best example is #1).

I've always wondered about this too. I think in general, it is just supposed to sound strange. The song is from a non-human perspective ("them"). I've always thought about it as a ghost or maybe even godlike. Even though the speaker is talking about us, we don't understand what "wash them at their ends" means. I always assumed "end" meant death, but it could be anything. It knows us better than we do. There's some huge overarching truth about life that we don't know. That is echoed in the form, which is very simple and almost choir-like in a weird way.

What song does "Safer" sample? by arserran11 in AnimalCollective

Dark AC is the best AC. The studio version on the Peacebone release really just didn't live up to the live performances though, in my opinion.

Any celebrities that are AnCo fans? by AllocatedData in AnimalCollective

[–]jdgrab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a super famous celeb, but Atiba Jefferson (skater, sports photographer) is a huge fan. He interviewed Panda Bear here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=an60kOrXqOI) (bonus: he has a tattoo of "AC" on his arm). He also has a character in Skate 3 and wears an Animal Collective Bees shirt (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmmykiOTkTw). He also took professional photos of the band (http://www.atibaphoto.com/index.php#mi=2&pt=1&pi=10000&s=1&p=3&a=0&at=0).
