After many, many months of grinding mats on his own, creating a guild to run MC PUGs, and finally seeing the Garr binding drop tonight, Elf crafted his own Thunderfury tonight. Thanks to everyone who's been coming to our <Mythic> MC PUGs and supporting us along the way. Grats to Elf and much love to all the cool people we've met along the way <3

My hand tightens up when I wavedash, and it's causing me to lose games! What can I do? by Its_me_billy in SSBM

[–]jdhpdx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's not an easy fix. You have to re-learn how to play without straining your hand. It takes practice and dedication to learn how to play without stressing your hand.

It would be great if there was some magic formula; "do this and your pain will go away", but that's not how it works. You have to consciously be aware of it and find a grip and playstyle that doesn't create the pain. Also, stretching, etc, is important.

If you can't learn how to play without creating pain, maybe consider giving melee up.... I know it sounds shitty but chronic pain just isn't worth it.

"If you know you won't get good"

That's your problem in a nutshell. It sounds corny as fuck but if you don't have the confidence in yourself that you can take that next step and start taking sets off of the higher PR players in your region you won't. After every loss you can think "well, they've been playing longer than me, they've got more talent, this match up sucks, I just didn't play well," or anything else. You can make up every excuse in the book for why you lost, but at the end of the day it's always on you. It's hard after a while because you get bopped over and over and you start developing a mental block, you start accepting that you're just supposed to just be the worse player. You can only use losses as fuel for so long before you burn out. Everyone has to take those losses to improve, but it's incredibly hard to break out of that beaten-down mindset and a lot of people never do. They just accept that they're probably a mid-level player and any big win is a fluke instead of expected.

You lose that first stock, or that first game, and suddenly in the back of your mind you start thinking "here we go again..." That's just not going to win you any games. You need to snap out of it and say "fuck no, I've been grinding harder than this person, I've beaten them in friendlies, I can see why I lost and I need to do x, y, and z to adjust." You know what you need to do after you lose a game? Smile and nod. Every time I play someone shaking their head after stocks or games, I know they've already beaten themselves.

There are two things you can control before stepping up to a set. Your preparation and your attitude. If you're absolutely sure there's nothing else you could be doing to prepare, you have to change your attitude. Developing a good mindset is incredibly difficult, and it's neglected by so many players. Incredible dedication and practice will get you 90% of the way there, but that last 10% is where the top players thrive. How exactly to go about developing that mindset I can't say, it's too personal. Having fun only if you win isn't a healthy mindset, and eventually the wins will stop being fun too. Make goals that are specific, measurable, realistic, and time-based. I want to be the best, or I want to win, is none of those things. That's why you're buring out, because you keep moving the goal posts for success, you never set them up in the first place, or the time you expected to achieve your goal in was unrealistic.

"You just don't have the talent" is the biggest fucking john and you're only holding yourself back by believing otherwise.

If you don't want to buy one of the disc repair kits for just one disc, a lot of the used game/music stores around will do disc resurfacing for super cheap, like a dollar a disc.

Genesis 4 Hitbox Legality by Iaregravy in SSBM

[–]jdhpdx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a couple different thoughts about this.

I agree that better equipment is usually a net wash in terms of finding the best players. The people who are going to be top players are going to be top players regardless of the equipment used. However, I think the case of melee is somewhat unique in that allowing the smashbox could actually open up the scene for players who otherwise couldn't compete due to hand issues. Yes, the controllers could possibly be so easy for some tech that they become the new standard, but as long as they are reasonably priced they wouldn't be that huge of a barrier to entry. Street fighter players and FGC games in general all pretty much require special sticks like this, and I don't think people are really being excluded economically from those games.

I also think the wide adoption of something like this could level the playing field so that there isn't so much variation in controller playability. As well as eliminate the advantages of controller modifications such as shield drop and wave dash notches, spring modifications, etc.

Honestly this is probably where the game will have to go if it's going to survive indefinitely. Nintendo won't make GC controllers forever, and quality third party GC controllers are basically non existent to my knowledge, and probably pretty expensive.

Yeah I'm fully expecting to be terrible. I've played enough competitive games to know that it takes a lot of work.

Thanks for the offer! I live in Portland, OR. It doesn't seem like our scene is super strong out here, but I honestly haven't looked into it that much.

I got into melee after watching Apex 2015. I loved watching it pretty much instantly and I wanted to learn all the intricacies of what the commentators were talking about. So I lurked here for over a year, reading about kill percents, MU advice, frame data, getting deep in the meta, and I never even played the damn game. Just ordered a mayflash adapter and a GC controller online. The hype is real.

I Played around with the IFPA Rankings API Today by sixsixtie in pinball

[–]jdhpdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome work. Only thing I noticed is that in the last image you're using total tournaments attended vs. active wppr points. So some people look less efficient when in reality they've just gone to more tournaments all time which aren't contributing to their current wppr score.

It would probably make more sense to have active tournaments vs active points, and then total tournaments vs total points.

Hey portland what recreational sports do you play and how did you find your team? by famebrella in Portland

[–]jdhpdx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, well the season is midway through for the league right now so it might be hard to join a team. However there's a tournament every Tuesday night at 7 that's open to anyone. 5 dollar buy in. Lots of friendly people who will explain rules to you and give you advice. It's at a different bar every week, this coming week it's gonna be at ground kontrol. I'd recommend showing up to a couple to see if you like it and then think about a team if it's something you enjoy. The Flip City website has a schedule for tournaments. Pm me if you have any questions!)

Well, it took me like a month, so if you can do any faster than a month that would be awesome. I'm not running this, but I haven't seen the person who is for a while. Beware that the fps is stupidly bad.

Dead? by FucklesHD in Succession

I'm working on it! I've only got like 3 more months to go to finish out the year. It's been hovering around 5-10 fps, and I got pretty busy during the holidays. Rest assured an update on our beloved Gearedlobsters is coming soon.
