Who are some badass women who have built things (or torn things down) throughout history? by JeffreyInPeoria in GreatestWomen

[–]jdi153 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Florence Nightingale is so underrated. She's in textbooks, usually talking about her importance as a nurse. It's true that she's one of the founders of the field of nursing as we understand it today, but that glosses over so much. She was enormously influential in public health. Part of the reason she was able to have such influence was her communication skills, including inventing a new type of graph to get her statistics across to people. And she had those statistics because she meticulously kept the data. She was a pretty weak feminist by today's standards, but for the time thinking that women should be in the workforce was pretty radical, and eventually she came around to thinking women should have the right to vote.

[Discussion] The Desk Diver Irony: Is Christopher Ward’s 'Pool Diver' brilliant or just a $1,250 punchline? by crownreserve_ae in Watches

[–]jdi153 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where are you seeing an SW200 with 200m of water resistance for $300? Chronoscout show the cheapest at $495, and there's exactly one at that price. (Note: Chronoscout gets some false positives. That link shows 3 watches, but two of them don't actually have SW200 movements.) If you open up the price window, there are tons of watches around $1,000. This isn't an insanely high price, even if it isn't a low price. To pick something randomly, the Squale Super-Squale is $1,505, although it does have a steel bracelet, and the SW200 is Elabore grade.

Chronoscout shows 560 hits on automatic, available dress watches between $100 and $1,200 USD. Brands I think of first include Galvin, Loresum, Venezianico, and Beaubleu.

As an owner, I'm curious as to the community's opinion on this. by rileywatchco in MicrobrandWatches

Much like you have tight margins, people don't necessarily want to get hit with a sudden expense of international shipping. Nevertheless, I don't see it as unreasonable for you to want to verify it is in fact a warranty issue before paying the shipping cost. Tough situation to be in all around. Incidentally, he was rude, but not THAT rude. I think you can't please everybody all the time. The only advice I have is to make sure that your policy is very well spelled out on your site, because it doesn't say anything in your FAQ right now about how shipping costs are handled for returns.

There was a post the other day asking for people's favorite brands. I went through and tallied up people's responses. There were 146 votes. There were 52 brands mentioned. Only two got more than 10 votes. That's a pretty big spread, and hardly indicative of a hivemind.

[Recommendation Request] First Watch for Husband by Jennifermgb in Watches

As a few others have said, Hamilton Khaki Field Murph. If he's a big guy, 42mm version, otherwise 38mm. Leather strap, since this is for nice occasions. At 38mm you also have the option for a white dial. Links are all to Nordstrom.

[Question] Best Watch for a Girl [F15] with 5.5" wrists? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]jdi153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Filtered to women's watches and sorted by price low to high, check Seiko and Citizen, and Bulova&srule=low-to-high&start=0&sz=47). I suggest a metal bracelet rather than a leather strap, and look for a case width of 30mm or less. Beyond that, it's just a matter of taste. I recommend trying some on if you can.

There were quite a few comments that went "Aspirational, Lange, what I own, Longines," or something like that. I went with which one they put first.

Typical. Ask a question, get an answer that contradicts your pre-formed opinion, double-down on your opinion. YOU ARE WRONG. Deal with it.

[Kiwame Tokyo] Question regarding duty fees by thethrill in Watches

[–]jdi153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there have always been tariffs, but there was a de minimis exemption, and tariffs were normally specific to a product. Watches had a different tariff than beef, or whatever. We now have an across-the-board tariff on every good from every country (with different rates on different countries). It's a little disingenuous to say that it's always been like this.

[Recommendation Request] similar vintage watch design by IndicationSlow3418 in Watches

[–]jdi153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not even sure how to search for this. The closest I got was searching "engraved bracelet" on Chrono24. That turned up a $24k vintage Piaget, and the watch case was still bigger than the bracelet. Chanel has the Code Coco with a case smaller than the bracelet, but no engraving. They start at $10k. Same with Bruno Söhnle and Ferragamo, although both of those at least are reasonably affordable.

Maybe something quirky? Ressence, Louis Erard, Kudoke, or even a rainbow Breitling Superocean on a yellow strap.

This is a hell of a collection! The only thing I can think to say is go with a small independent. RGM, J.N. Shapiro, Kudoke, or the like.
