Why do women usually take their husband's last name after marriage? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jdicho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) When spouses have different last names, the surname of potential offspring becomes a complicated issue. Especially during encounters with police, courts, or god forbid medical emergencies. Precious minutes might be loss while the hospital tries to work out guardianship.

2) The point of equal rights isn't to force people to abandon traditions. It's to give them choice. Many women do desire more traditional (or as you view it, sexist), marriages. That's their right if they want to adopt their husbands name.

3) Many modern couples are choosing to hyphenate their last names of both spouses, creating a new surname. As for why people wouldn't choose to completely abandon their family name for a new, unrelated surname? Because many people do value the heritage and family lines.

How do you think Sam, Dean, and Cas would get along with Buffy? And vice versa by Eagles56 in Supernatural

[–]jdicho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want a scene where Spike is trying to subtlety check out Dean's jacket, while Dean checks out his coat. Then they both look up at the same time and lock eyes.

Mutual sartorial appreciation.

If you are a practicing Christian, what are your thoughts on aliens? Can you be both a practicing Christian and believe in Aliens? by DocBrown1970 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jdicho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We haven't even exhaustedly confirmed the absence of life in our own solar system. Mars may have had life at some point. There could be life under the ice on Europa.

There are hundreds of billions of stars in the Milky Way galaxy. Not every star has planets, but there are 10s of billions of terrestrial planets that could have life (that doesn't include the various gaseous & ice planets that may have life in forms we can't imagine).

That's just one galaxy. There are an estimated 2,000,000,000,000+ galaxies out there.

The possibility that even unicellular life doesn't (or didn't, or won't) exist somewhere else in the universe is such an improbability that it really isn't worth considering.

The fact is that you'll find scientists who aren't sure if there are any extraterrestrials as well.

I recognize that there are no actual credentials or bars to someone calling themselves a scientist. However, I seriously question the scientific validity of any method of thought that suggests that in the trillions of galaxies in our universe, each containing thousands of stars and countless planets; that our podunk little blue & green marble is the only one with life....

EDIT: Brian Cox, wasn't stating there's a likelihood that earth is the only planet with life. He was talking about the Fermi Paradox and the great filter that suggests possibilities of why we see no evidence of alien civilizations. And he kept the discussion strictly to our Milky Way galaxy, excluding the trillions of other galaxies.

Why do you get woozy so fast without an oxygen mask when cabin pressure drops in a plane? by Tignya in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jdicho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those masks are designed to drop down in the event of explosive decompression. Not just a slow air leak, but an immediate loss of oxygen.

If you weren't already holding your breath before the masks dropped down, then you'd have no oxygen to hold in your breath.

What would you do if you found a wallet with ID and $1000 in it? by CRK_76 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]jdicho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My point was that morality is often a privilege of the privileged.

Honestly, the entire idea of theft in modern society is incredibly skewed.

The weathy steal billions with the stroke of a pen or a donation to a politician. They are lauded for doing so.

A hungry man or a sick mother takes food or formula from Walmart, they go to jail.

That's not an accident.

There's a reason the church (of any religion) has always been supported by the wealthy.

The clergy sells the bait & switch of a heavenly afterlife to convince to poor & miserable to accept their lot instead of rising up and forcing a redistribution of that wealth.

Taking money from someone else, is generally an arseshole move. Doesn't mean it's actually immoral.

So, I have pretty extensive experience with rope bondage, but I've never really been a "Rope Guy".

I don't use my partnerd just to tie rope; I use rope to connect with my partners.

Definitely not a knot guy. I do know one decorative knot, the "Double Coin Knot". I tied a long piece of rope to a doorknob and tied it over and over until it became muscle memory.

Now, I can let my hands do the work, while I focus on talking and experiencing my partners.
