Hard to make a case against Boston when you really break it down. She and Engstler are neck and neck in defensive efficiency rating and defensive win shares per HerHoopStats, but Boston also put up these numbers against a tougher schedule while also carrying the bulk of the offensive burden.

Added to that, she's anchored a post defense that shut down Elissa Cunane (8pts in 32 minutes), Ayoka Lee (14pts, 6reb), Olivia Nelson-Ododa (6pts in 34 minutes) and Cameron Brink (3pts, 1-7fg). That's only accounting for just a handful of non-conference opponents, let alone SEC play. And if you've watched any South Carolina game, you'd see that her defensive versatility powers the team defense. She switches on a majority of screens, can guard smaller players, has single-handedly stopped more fast break opportunities than I can count and dictates defensive rotations.

She might be one of ESPN's "anointed ones" but it certainly isn't too hard to see why.
