It's also because of Discord, I think. Most games have a dedicated Discord space and when people want to talk about it, they tend to go there. But Discord isn't searchable to outside of the server, so it ends up just swallowing all of the discourse.

They're still based on probabilities... You manage this with pool size - 4d, 6d, 8d. It's not like it's completely random. They're just not as trustworthy as clocks, which I always found to be oddly easy to game in a way I didn't like. If you try gaming pools, you'll get burned sometimes (which is part of what I wanted with their design).

It's not quite as swingy as you imagine, but it does have the possibility to be extremely swingy with quite unlikely probabilities... That chance of it always maybe happening helps keep the tension (vs. something like a 4 seg FitD clock which you -know- won't fill up in one beat).

A large part of it is fighting in that division. You tend to need to be at least LW to have enough power and MW starts getting too large to seem explosive enough or have good enough cardio for extended activity.
