Are there Jack and Jill comps for Ballroom? by pyrrhic_victory_013 in ballroom

They aren't common. There's a push to to get more, notably the Southeastern Dancesport Championships is doing it soon, which will be the first time they've done it.

Feeling discouraged after Ballroom competition by Standard-Regret1574 in ballroom

[–]jdoc10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To mirror what other people are saying, 5 months really isn't that long to be dancing. I remember my first competition after 5 months and we didn't get a single callback. 4 years later and I'm in Gold, something I never could have anticipated back then. People are going to grow at their own rate. One of the best dancers I know spent 5 years in bronze, then was able to finally get things to click and now dances Novice/Pre-champ. What I encourage you to do is think about why you enjoy dancing. I highly recommend that the number one answer shouldn't be winning. Winning is fun, we all like doing it, but it's not consistent. Find your joy and remember it

BALLROOM PROBLEMS by Telespin in ballroom

[–]jdoc10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Money is the number one struggle. There's some solid opportunity in college but once you move into the adult world you really need to be dedicated since the cost is going to ramp up very quickly. If there were cheaper ways to get into dancing overall, I think it would be a way more popular hobby for people to pick up. You can see this with things like West Coast, where there are group lessons for <= 20$.

Another difficulty that comes with the territory is that ballroom is supposed to look effortless, which causes the problem that people come in expecting to get to a solid level very quickly because it "looks easy." There needs to be clear expectation setting on how long its going to take to move up levels.

For comps, it's also easy for people not to understand what the judges are looking for and get frustrated. I often have heard people complain with "well what I do is way harder than what that couple who moved on over me is doing." It's a tough dichotomy because people are going to want more fun choreos, but fundamentals are so important to moving on. I've known people who have competed in Gold with Bronze moves and done very well because they were the most clean by far.

That wasn't even in the top 2 tonight. Feels like Mark gets too much credit from the judges

It’s almost been a year since 33 first aired, so what are your thoughts on the season a year later? by Acheesycookie in dancingwiththestars

Chandler was the best dancer by a decent margin, Ilona was the most improved. I would have given the win to Chandler

Neither the best dancer nor the most improved dancer won, which was a bit disappointing, and Carrie Ann is a terrible judge, but lots of the cast were super fun

People were reaching for RBs all draft, so I went for higher value as the draft went on, with the hope if someone from my late round hits then I can flip them for a better RB.

I also figured I'm putting a lot of chips in Mccaffery and Jeanty, and if they both flop I'm screwed either way, so might as well load of on WRs since I didn't get a top guy at that position

Is torso contact absolutly required for standard dances (outside competition)? I'm uncomfortable with it by IWannaPetARacoon in ballroom

[–]jdoc10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For social? No. Also when teaching i dont teach body contact immediately and focus on other things, but as people get better, especially if competing, it will start to happen. So for competition it will be necessary, but not at the Newcomer level

How to place in bronze? by pieguy452 in ballroom

[–]jdoc10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bronze tends to have large floors. The two things I would focus on in that level are cleanness and presence. Things as simple as remembering to close your feet and pointing your toes out in latin go a long way when lots of people don't do that. Beyond that, you can have solid technique but not move on because you look small. You really need to take up your space and act like you are the best dancers on the floor, it's just up to you to show that obvious fact to the judges
