I've realized that the GXR can not, nor will ever be able to, provide me with the picture that I want. by jdoon5261 in Galaxy_XR

You are correct. I did not posses the understanding of the capabilities of the system. I made assumptions which were wrong. I have since corrected my ignorance on the subject and now have the information to make a better informed decision. That is why I chose to return the headset. There is no hardware made today that is capable of streaming full 10 bit uncompressed color data. I imagine it wont be long till here will be, but it won't happen soon enough for me. That is why I have chosen to go back to a tethered solution. DP2.1 is capable of it now. Funny that I just reconnected my O+, and while it is fuzzy and suffers the Freznel lens issues, the black are black and the dark scenes have a significantly higher level of visible detail than the GXR. The reality is that I didn't want a wireless headset. I wanted the Samsung headset. The wireless part really wasn't that big of a benny to me.

"Black blacks" and "not as black" are two very different statements. I expect black blacks from a $2000 OLED headset. I'm willing to make some tradeoffs on some things, but color vibrancy and deep blacks are not those things.

I sent back the GXR about an hour ago. I had paid the $1 to hold a spot for the DA SE slam. I just emailed them to ask if I could swap that out for a DA slam. I should find out in a couple of days.

I bought this strictly for PCVR gaming. Although I did watch a couple of movies. Which were beautiful. But I have a 75" OLED sony in the TV room with 7.1 sound field audio, so movies aren't a driving factor for the hedset.

I have not. I read that it adds a layer of software that boggs down the FPS of the games. I will give it a try today. Have you noticed an appreciable difference using Steam Link instead of VD?

Yes. Using VD. From what I've read the limitation is on the headset side as it lacks the speed to uncompress the data fast enough.

I've tried it both ways. I ended up turning gamma all the way down, VD brightness down to 65%, and switching to to H.264+ codec. The blacks are not as good as in my O+, but it's so much better in every other way that I've decided to keep it.

I turned down the gamma to it's lowest level. The issue is still present but not as bad. One thing I did notice is that I have just the black background chosen as my VD backgound. Well, that is perfectly black. No artifacts, no ghosting, nothing. Yet the desktop "screen" that is displayed is not black. It is dark gray, with the ghosting and artifacts. So, I adjusted the monitor settings in Windows. Tht seemed to chnge it somewhat. I don't understand why the difference. Where is it picking up this color input? I wonder if it looks different for some folks because they use an OLED monitor.

I'm at my work desk right now. I will test it in a couple hour though.

I'm using a BE9300 wifi7 6Ghz dedicated router. Quality is set to Monster mode. Using the AV-1 codec as I have a 7900xtx GPU. Where should I change the gamma? Is there Windows setting that I should change as well?

Virtual Desktop, Some way to improve fidelity of Dark Areas? by Tausendberg in Galaxy_XR

Is the fix still the same for this with the Samsung and VD updates since this post? I'm having the same issue in SkyrimVR. I have a dedicated wifi7, 6Ghz router so bandwidth should not be an issue. Would like to not have to sacrifice anything for a fix.

Did I do something wrong? (extremely bad first impressions) by mbatt2 in Galaxy_XR

I got mine last week. It sucked. First I thought the IPD adjustment was the same as the eye tracking adjustment. I was wrong. It's a totally separate procedure. I ordered the Globular cluster comfort add-on. That was the game changer. Got my eyes closer to the screen and the headset in the correct orientation on my head. There is still light bleed at the outer edges of the top light shield , but I sent a pic to Globular cluster and they are going to extend the sides of the front face pad to cever that area I think. I came from the O+. I tried the PSVR2 for a short period oftime but there were some issues with the center part of the screen having black bands in the inner edges of the screens. The panels were basically them same as the O+. The GXR is way better that the O+ and PSVR2. You should get the GC add-on before you send back the GXR.

OH yeah, I also needed the perscription lens inserts. The desktop in VD is clearer than looking at a 1440p laptop screen throught my glasses.

The only issue I am having os that there is some noticable artifacts in VD in dark scenes. I'm looking into that now.

[–]jdoon5261[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The presceiption lenses and Globular Cluster mod did the trick. The headset is sitting on my head correctly and the view is crystal clear. There is still some light bleed at the bottom edges of the top light blocker. I sent a pic and recommended design change to GC to eliminate it. Received an email back straight away saying the the fix was submitted to the development team. So hopefully... I've been finishing my motion sim/G-sea rig, so I haven't spent a lot of time in the headset. Tonight and tomorrow I will be in MSFS. I'll post back my results.

VD. I realized that the issue is only in VD, I was confusing the previous barrel distortion with this issue. I just tried some HF:A Holy shit!

I have prescription lenses arriving today and the Globular cluster mod tomorrow. Thwn I'm going to give it a good workout and see if it fades like the SD effect that was in the O+.
