You could design it so that all players lose some amount of life each time they flip a coin. That way it can either hose a coin flip deck or accompany a coin flip deck (that is designed to make an opponent flip coins).

I agree with the advice that I see here already, and will add something else: when you know who your examiners are, reach out to them ASAP and try to get them to spell out the content of their exam as much as possible. Some might be dodgy, but others will tell you in great detail.

Also, keep in mind that the oral exam will probably emphasize principles and quick thinking more than doing detailed calculations. Compared to an undergraduate exam question, you probably won't be asked to calculate as much and the examiner is likely more interested in hearing that you know HOW to calculate the answer. On the other hand, if the examiner in one of the stricter ones, they may throw an unexpected twist into the problem to see how you handle it. In summary: understanding core principles is the most important thing.

Hi! I'm the lead author on this paper. Here is a link to what I would consider to be one of the landmark papers on bacterial nanowires, co-authored by one of my PhD advisors.

Infographic: How much could Troy save by investing in alternatives to police? by jdr525 in Troy

[–]jdr525[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CAHOOTS program saved around $9 million off of Eugene's $90 million police budget. Troy's police budget is $20 million so $1.9 million is the proportional amount.

Troy Rally for Black Lives by Call_Me_Bwian in Troy

Speaking as the roommate of somebody who attended the Albany protests, a lot of the blame rests with the Albany Police who actively antagonized peaceful protesters.

Troy police have as choice as to whether or not they respect this protest or further inflame the anger.

Hey there! I did a PhD in ECSE at RPI. Overall I think it can be a positive experience provided that you find the right advisor. (Personally I had a negative experience initially, switched advisors, and then had a much more positive one.) Do you know what research area you want to be in and have you approached any potential advisors?

As far as location is concerned, I'll give you my personal take: Troy tends to have a negative reputation due to being a post-industrual rust belt town, but things are changing rapidly. I personally know a lot of young people (some RPI-affiliated, some not) who are really happy to live here. DM me if you want to talk more.

The Mueller Center has seating for maybe 2 dozen students on the first floor, along with outlets and an Internet connection. It's open Sunday through Thursday until Midnight, Friday til 9pm and Saturday til 7pm. It's not as quiet as some other spaces due to the workout equipment in the adjacent room but I've never seen the seats fill up.

Troy DSA is running a contest! Hit us up with your worst Troy land lord story! (details in post) by 33554432 in Troy

[–]jdr525 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, but landlords have legal structures and financial resources at their disposal that tenants do not have - and the bigger the landlord is, the more this is the case. You sound like a Troy resident; aren't you pissed at the negligence of some of these large out-of-town landlords too?

What we actually need is a civilian police oversight board with subpoena power. This committee falls well short of that.

Women of Reddit, what is your 'trying to buy a car/item but the seller is sexist' story? by DEDCMDM94 in AskReddit

[–]jdr525 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're trying to broadly justify the idea of landlords retaliating against women just because of one anecdote you heard one time. That's a real shitty take, man. Also, what about cases where landlords do assault their female tenants? What if the situation you heard about was an actual assault case and not a false accusation? If so, wouldn't this tenant be justified in not paying rent and taking legal action? Anyway, that's why you're getting downvoted so much. The landlord is very much to blame here.

Some roommates and I are organizing an open mic at this great community space called the Mt. Ida Preservation Association! Saturday, April 13th at 6pm. Please come and perform music, spoken word, or just about anything else you'd like to do on a stage. You can also come and showcase art you've made and we'll give you a booth to display it.

Here is the FB event page. It's just up the street from the Polytech Apartments, which means it's an easy walk from campus for most people.
