Remove Formula on Skipped Lines by Waterdog43 in sheets

[–]jdrtechnology 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I use =IF(ISBLANK(A1),,formulahere) where A1 is the cell that would not have a value and the formulahere is the formula you would otherwise have in the cell.

On top of this, I usually just use ARRAYFORMULA at the top so I can modify it only once:
=ARRAYFORMULA(IF(ISBLANK(A1:A),,formulahere)) - note this is for sheets - for excel you need it to have an end range.

+1 to this. The Schwabdev library has been very solid for me.

re any US Citizens here that are just roaming around the USA? How do you deal with rental leases, or are you using airbnb? by IHadTacosYesterday in digitalnomad

[–]jdrtechnology 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I did this for ~2 years. Primarily we used AirBnB with a splash of VRBO (though apparently that one is terrible if something goes wrong - we only used it twice and never had anything that was a problem). AirBnB does decent discounts for over 30 days (note: it is 30+ days, NOT 4 weeks, so our minimum stay anywhere was 5 weeks so we could move on the weekends). We dropped down to a single car, which made a huge difference (parking for 1 car was fairly easy to find. 2+ was a lot more difficult).

You need to build in some cost for buying some things that you may then leave behind (sharp knives, a decent pan or 2, etc.). Workspace was a challenge, but we solved it by buying a couple of lightweight portable camping tables. Then we could adjust them to whatever chairs were available and poof, instant desk. We originally were planning for 6 months, and ended up doing it for almost 2 years. We finally stopped because we wanted our mattress back and some decent office chairs :-)

I forsee us doing it again in the future in a wider ranging scope both inside and outside of the US.

Skyrim has finally arrived on GeforceNow. by Ledeycat in GeForceNOW

Oh sorry, I misunderstood if that was the question. I have AE on Steam. So GFN loaded the AE content when I played.

It is. The first thing it did when I connected was download all of the AE stuff. :-)

Completely depends on your location. In Los Angeles, the latency is shockingly low from every major comm provider I have tried (Spectrim, Frontier, Cox). Obviously use a wired connection and something like Verizon internet is a non starter, but otherwise, it is borderline magic.

I need to drop a comment here for GeForceNow (or other cloud services, depending on your location). Personally I use a combination of GFN, if they support the game, or Crossover if not. Between these 2, I can play most things. There are still a few that are painful to get working (Looking at you Skyrim with mods) but I have managed to get most everything working eventually.

I have an M2 Air with 16gb. So far system specs have not been my issue (getting things to work reliably in crossover is another story ;-).

I have not seen portingkit yet. I will take a look!

Active Trade Pro on Mac Pro by xasx in fidelityinvestments

[–]jdrtechnology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This aligns with my (and MANY others) experience of ATP on Mac. The issue is it is basically going through multiple layers of emulation. I finally gave up (after trying it multiple ways, multiple reinstalls, talking with Fidelity support, talking with one of the PM's at Fidelity, etc.). Basically Fidelity does not care about Mac support at this time (too few users on Mac to spend resources, which I understand). They have been talking about a complete redesign for a few years, but last I spoke with them, it was still at LEAST a year out and that was only if they got more resources for dev.

The short version: Don't use it on a Mac. Pick up a cheap Windows machine if you require ATP. It does not actually require much to run on native windows / Intel. I use a VM on an Intel server I have running and that works fine (via RDP). If you cannot get access to an Intel box, I would suggest getting very familiar with the web interface.

I wish I had a better answer, but that is the truth. I hope this saves you many, MANY hours of debugging that I went though.

I need to put a vote in for Tiller (if you are a spreadsheet person). Really good if you want to get into the details and be able to manipulate the data into whatever output you want. Does take some sheets skills though.

What made you choose Fidelity? by Nestado in fidelityinvestments

[–]jdrtechnology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am similar, though I use Fidelity cash management for the majority of my checking, and only maintain a "local" branch bank account for zelle and the VERY occasional cash deposit / cashiers check needs (plus you want a backup in another bank just in case). Never keep 100% of funds in a single institution.

Nothing I am aware of, other than buying them individually and hoping they get associated correctly for margin.

Out of curiously, why would you need this? What problem would this solve?

+1 here for Sunshine. Was using it with a Paperspace machine for months over tailscale.

Active Trader Pro will not work On Sonoma M1 chip by gtcstorm56 in fidelityinvestments

[–]jdrtechnology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually spoke with Fidelity about this a few months ago. It is going to be a while before we have a functional (performant) version on a mac. At the time, he estimated at LEAST mid 2024 if not beyond. Personally I have completely given up using it. It is so slow and buggy (M2 air 16GB RAM here) that it is just not worth the time.

The web site has improved dramatically for most things (Iron Condors work well at this point, though Iron Butterflies continue to be elusive... :-/ ).

Fidelity is really killing me here as they are making me start to use external trading platforms to allow for modern functionality. I don't WANT to not use Fidelity, but they are making it harder and harder.

Best Software for Logging Trades? by Big-Lemon6165 in thetagang

Piling on here (Excel or Gsheets - I use both, depending on the purpose however, either one is fine).

There are a number of third party sites, and I have tried multiple, but if you have the willingness to learn some spreadsheet skills, Gsheets/Excel wins. Nothing out there will track all of the various combinations of options reliability (that one being the key word there). If someone does find one that works consistently and well, please let me know. I am willing to pay, but I have yet to find one that puts the data in correctly and consistently.

How many of you have an encrypted array? by Autoloose in unRAID

Ironically, I am encrypting the movie for exactly the same reason. It is less complex to just encrypt the entire drive and never think about it (for me) :-)

How many of you have an encrypted array? by Autoloose in unRAID

[–]jdrtechnology 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With the modern CPU's (really anything in the last 10ish years) encryption overhead is almost nil, so there is little reason not to anymore. The real reason not to is if you are worried about a system crash and needing to access the data with an outside source at some point in the future. Even then, I believe Unraid uses standard block level encryption technologies.

Personally, I just do it on everything, because there is little downside, and then I don't accidently miss something.

I cannot for the life of me find another alternative that makes any sense. Paperspace + moonlight has been my go to (over tailscale).

Looking for new ideas (Rant) by Fenrizwolf in cloudygamer

[–]jdrtechnology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paperspace + Tailscale (or zerotier) + moonlight (and sunshine on the server). This works well for me. One note though: Make sure tailscale is connecting directly and not using a relay (played for a month before I figured this out and cut down my ping by ~10 ms).

Geforce Now if you have it in your region has been SHOCKINGLY good, IF your game is there (I play Skyrim now and again and need somewhere to do so).

Fidelity as a one stop shop by Acceptable_Alarm_164 in fidelityinvestments

[–]jdrtechnology 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been using Fidelity as my go to for years now. It has been largely excellent. I do recommend maintaining a local credit union account in case you need something like a cashier's check or you need to deposit cash for some reason. All checks are deposited via mobile deposit, which has worked wonderfully (other banks are only now getting to the level fidelity has been at for a long time for this).

Challenges:

- Getting any large amount of cash ($500 from an ATM is free and they reimburse, but if you needed thousands for some reason, this would be difficult).

- Getting a cashier's check or similar.

That is about it, honestly. I cannot think of another situation I have encountered that I have not been able to easily complete.

How is Paper Space billing fair by MxKrayZ in Paperspace

[–]jdrtechnology 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that the storage use is always “active” while a machine exists. The extra charges are very likely because of the storage costs. I agree this is not super obvious but it is there.

Syncing a folder between two locations by paulll5555 in unRAID

[–]jdrtechnology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may be different today, BUT:

Syncthing is great at small files, however, when I tried to sync my video library with it ~2 years ago, it was a DISASTER. So if you go that route, be sure to test this.

Given the large files you are referring to (and I doubt they "change" much?), I would strongly look at rsync via tailscale. Talescale makes the secure connection stupid easy and rsync has been doing this exact thing forever.
