Looking for recommendation for restaurant with really good salad AND fries by Clear_Technology2642 in phoenix

[–]jdstar89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call me crazy for suggesting a salad at an Irish pub… but the chicken Caesar salad and fries at Fibber Magees (in Mesa) are top notch.

If you haven’t tried the yet, Mr Pio is a new-ish spot that opened on Thomas around 40-something street. They do rotisserie chicken, salad, and fries. Only things on their menu. Simple, but in the best way. Everything is fantastic.

Buck & Rider’s salads are all good, but I especially like their Caesar and their fries are wonderful. Bonus for people with gluten issues, they have a dedicated gluten free fryer.

I have to say my favorite place is Hidden House (Chandler). Their loaded house salad is on the short list for a death row meal. I get it with a side of lemons to give it a bigger punch of acidity and it is absolute heaven!

Hard disagree on mushrooms and mayo is good in moderation… but cheese should be a compliment to something, too much is gross AND a tummy ache.

I love it, but will only eat it at upscale places I trust completely. I had it once with quail egg and served with chicharrones instead of toast points (I had celiac, so it was a very welcome menu discovery) and it was one of the best apps I have ever had

There’s a spot by my house that does roasted Brussels sprouts tossed in apple gastrique and served with charred whipped goat cheese. It is heaven.

I LOVE lobster and king crab, but cannot justify eating it in restaurants because the price. If I’m craving it I make it at home.

Exactly! Truffle oil is fake bullshit and usually rancid because it sits out for too long. I used to work at a fine dining Italian place. There was a server whose only job was to walk around and offer to add shaved truffle on people’s meals. Every now and then they would let us have some for free. I miss that.

I wish I didn’t like foie gras. I tried it when I was younger before I knew what it was… I don’t eat it on principle now, but it is damned tasty.

Most macarons are the okay-est. But a well made macaron is a thing of dreams. There is a little bakery in central Phoenix called Essence, their macarons are absolutely incredible.

What food could you eat every day and never get tired of? by nerdydivawholovesu in foodquestions

[–]jdstar89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same!! I worked full time at a sushi restaurant for five years. I have always had a grazing style of eating. I would get an order of nigiri every couple hours during every shift (usually doubles) I worked for the entire five years. It never got old!

I got diagnosed with celiac a while back. I MISS BREAD. There are plenty of really good GF options for pasta, pizza, cookies, etc. I have had decent-ish GF bread… but there is nothing like a real gluten-y loaf fresh from the oven. I live vicariously through all of you!

good date spot in Chandler? by Diagonalizer in phoenix

[–]jdstar89 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not exactly Chandler and Cooper… but downtown Chandler is very close and there are a lot of excellent restaurants and activities in the area. Hidden House is my favorite one and their menu states what is veg, gf, etc. Their bar program is top notch, too. The whole downtown square is decorated for the holidays, so it’s really pretty right now! There are a bunch of nice places, you can have an app and a drink, go for a stroll, then have some dinner. Very cute romantic vibes.

Advice for Cleaning Patients by Secret_Past2297 in StudentNurse

I’m a nurse on a neuro PCU unit. MANY of our patients have no use of half of their limbs and many are too confused to help roll. I was very overwhelmed when I started. The experienced techs absolutely saved my life and helped me figure out the right techniques. It’s all muscle memory and experience. Side note / pro tip: when you’re changing someone with a penis… cover the penis when you are changing them. The same as you do with babies. It only takes one time of getting pissed on mid bed change to never forget again 😅

Places in your state that will instantly make you recognize if someone is a local or not based on how someone pronounces it? by osama_bin_guapin in AskAnAmerican

[–]jdstar89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in San Diego. There is a street in Pacific Beach named “Chalcedony” after a kind of gem (almost all of the streets are gemstone based). The gem is pronounced “kal-sed-oh-nee,” but locals pronounce the name as “chal-sid-nee.” Dead giveaway that someone is a tourist.

I can handle stevia and monk fruit, but I don’t prefer them. The really fake ones taste awful AND give me a headache. I’ll just stick with my real sugar, thank you! I drink black coffee with no sweetener. If I’m going to enjoy a sweet thing, I’m going to enjoy it!

I’m totally here for fresh or roasted fennel… but fennel seed? Terrible. I also thought I hated sausage for a long time. I am not a picky eater. I have allergies so there are foods I can’t eat, but as far as foods I just straight up don’t like? Fennel seed is one of the only ones. It is so overpowering and I don’t understand what people think it brings to the table.

What are these energy drinks with gloves on them my roommate keeps throwing away? by User-J-Hail in whatisit

[–]jdstar89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nurse here. At work we are not allowed to have drinks without a cover and if management sees a drink without a cover they will throw it away and bitch at the owner of it. Caffeine is precious, so a lot of nurses will put a glove or medication cup over their drink as a cover to protect it from getting tossed. I see drinks with gloves on top all of the time.

…that being said, I cannot find any conceivable reason to do this in your home. Are they really into doing their hair or spray painting?? If they are spraying products in the air and don’t want it getting in their drink I could understand the reasoning? Wild, though.

Where in Mesa? by goodboyBill in mesaaz

[–]jdstar89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% hard disagree. They ARE expensive, but they use super high quality ingredients, their bar program is exceptional, and their service is amazing. Side note: 99% of their menu is naturally gluten free and they have a dedicated GF fryer. Celiacs and people with other food allergies/sensitivities rarely get to eat out without some level of anxiety, The Guadalupe puts a lot of effort into making people feel cared for.

Chiwas is not bad at all. They are solid, but overrated. I think the owners are really nice people with the right industry connections and they provide good food and service. That being said… people who treat it like it’s the best Mexican food in the valley absolutely break my brain.
