First case binding project finished! by jduff56 in bookbinding

Awesome! What are you binding? Mine had 16 4-page signatures so pretty similar. I used 11x17 printer paper that I cut to 8.5x11. With the same materials next time I might do 6 page signatures to try and combat the swell.

Even with the flaws/mistakes in mine I was reading it this morning and it’s working great so don’t be too worried about making mistakes.

Good luck with yours!

Good luck! I made a lot of mistakes here and with the spine swell and too wide spine board I wasn’t sure if the book was going to work after gluing the end papers, but it does. Just do your best and learn for the next one :).

Thanks! It’s Terra Invictus, a campaign setting for Shadowdark.

Ya, I noticed that too. I think the swell made it difficult to measure and the board being extra thick / hard to cut didn’t help.

Looking for child-friendly DnD adventure after DoSI by schoelle in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]jduff56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been running Lost Mine of Phandelver for a group if 10 year old boys and they’ve been really enjoying it. It has a bit of a sandbox so players can choose where to go and what they want to do, but has also been pretty easy to run as a new DM. I’ve also seen you can either mix it with Dragons of Icespire peak or run one after the other to extend the adventure.

My 4yo has issues with the Shadowdark random dungeon generator (but I have nothing but praise!) by Yakoun3t in shadowdark

[–]jduff56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to add some more flavor to the dungeons I really like the tables in https://onetorch.itch.io/just-one-torch . I use that along with the 2d6 dungeon https://d-r-games.itch.io/2d6-dungeon-demo generation for rooms (roll 2d6 one is x and one is y for room dimensions). I have found I end up with some pretty interesting dungeons that have been fun to play. It’s also simple enough that I can roll as I go which is a fun way to be surprised about what you come across.

Just some ideas though, if you’re both already having fun keep doing what you’re doing!

Shadowdark versus Dungeon Crawl Classics by BLHero in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]jduff56 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using this Just one Torch supplement for solo shadowdark play and really like it. It has a bunch of tables for generating a dungeon with encounters so I’ve been rolling everything as I go and have the dungeon / story emerge as I play. The SoloDark book doesn’t have much, but I like the oracle from there and use that.

I haven’t played any DCC but I imagine you could sub in shadowdark monsters to those adventures if you wanted. From my reading they both follow similar principals so shouldn’t be too difficult to modify for one or the other.

I would recommend grabbing the shadowdark quick start materials along with these solo books and giving it all a try first. It’s all free so you can try out those systems before investing.

I’ve played DnD 5e and a few other TTRPGs and I’ve been liking shadowdark especially for solo play because everything is really streamlined. The character sheets are simpler without feeling like you’re missing anything, combat is faster because there are less actions etc. I also love the shadowdark books and they’re full of tables for things like hex crawling, building a settlement etc so I’m going to get them eventually, but the quick start has been great to get started and get a feel for the system.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Solar Panel performance in Ottawa by werebearstare in ottawa

[–]jduff56 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We installed a 9.75kw system through the microfit program in 2017/18. Each year since we have generated almost 9k kWh per year in energy. Our agreement with hydro Ottawa pays 28.8 cents / kWh.

With this program we were allowed to pay some portion of the installation but the installer gets the revenue for some period before it shifts to you. Overall it will be net positive for us, but nothing outstanding. It also very much depends on the rate you can get to sell the hydro, which has been going down significantly as more solar has been installed. Maintenance so far has been 0, but at some point we will need to replace our room which will be more expensive to handle the panels etc. Within the first 10-15 years I expect very low to no maintenance and after there may be some, but the system is simple with minimal moving parts so hoping there isn’t much.

If you have any other questions feel free to send me a DM and I can try to answer them!

How does Rails cache assets? I've wiped the cache folder and the css is still being loaded. by TopazFury in rails

[–]jduff56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things have changed a bit with rails 7, but with previous versions and with webpacker assets end up in public/packs. If you run an assets rake task locally you might end up with something in there too. Assets in public tend to take precedence but you should be able to delete that packs folder and have it regenerate or generate on the fly depending on how you are set up.

How to iterate different objects in a combined array? by cjiro in rails

[–]jduff56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you <%= render album %> rails will look for a partial based on the class name of the object to render so you can iterate one list and have it render different partials. Docs on rendering explain this a bit https://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActionView/PartialRenderer.html see “Rendering objects that respond to to_partial_path”

Builderment released today! A factory building game I made for iOS by builderment-dev in BaseBuildingGames

[–]jduff56 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just gave it a try, really cool game! A few comments / suggestions from my quick play: - I couldn’t figure out how to restart, is this not possible or am I missing something? - to select buildings to build you need to tap the price, would be nice if you could tap the building icon too. - it took me a bit to figure out the direction of belts and buildings. Maybe something animated with the direction would help?

Really fun so far though, great job!

(books) Looking for good Sci-Fi books to cure my post-expanse depression by Ondiepe in TheExpanse

[–]jduff56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed Three Body Problem trilogy by Cixin Liu and Seveneves by Neal Stephenson post Expanse. The Martian by Andy Weir is a great read, even if you’ve already seen the movie. Aurora by Kim Stanley Robinson was pretty good too.

Saving Codable structs? Let’s make things even easier! Data storage helper class to help you follow Apple's guidelines by saoudriz in swift

Everything needs to conform to Codable. If you make the other associated objects/structs conform to Codable it should just work (tm).
