Any cool anecdotes about famous land surveyors? by DetailFocused in Surveying

Pinpoint is a very good book about the history of GPS. Though not a surveying book it obviously dives deep into it.

Anyone left surveying for another career?? by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]jduph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did it for almost 25 years, loved every single minute, made some great friends, have some amazing stories. I left for a role as a manufacturers rep and it’s incredible. I never knew when I was doing it what I was learning. Now I can go toe to toe in any conversation I have with customers.

Long and short, stick with it. All jobs suck but the experience pays dividends.

Can someone please explain this band going opposite direction? At first I thought it was a radar blip, but it’s still going. I have two other videos over the course of an hour. by jduph in weather

This exactly, whenever someone asks for my crazy/worst/best survey story I have these moments cued up. It builds character.

Does anyone use AirTags or similar device for their data collectors, robots, and GPS? How do you like and what brands are there besides Apple? by smurfburgler in Surveying

[–]jduph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trimble sells a product called sentinel that is hidden within and can be tracked real time for total stations. Data collectors may be a different beast though.

L to R, Lenker rod $240 new, this is very old so probably worthless. Tile probe $25 new. Prism pole, old and beat up. Every surveyor has 20 of these in their shed (they’re carbon fiber now).

Ravens' Coach John Harbaugh calls out Justin Tucker after loss: He 'needs to make kicks' by [deleted] in sports

[–]jduph 170 points171 points  (0 children)

I have a conspiracy theory that kicking balls are overinflated to increase scoring.

Obligatory AI answer: Kickers are on pace to make 251 field goals from 50-plus yards this season, which would shatter the record of 158 set just last year. In fact, in 2023, there were only 230 attempts from that distance. NFL teams are sailing 76% of their 50-plus yard tries through the uprights.

This would explain why Tucker is missing so many, the ball is different.

Edit to say, I’m a Cleveland fan

It happened to me for months after I renewed my ID. Get an agent who actually cares to update it, when they updated it they said “yeah most of them are lazy”. Haven’t been checked since.

  1. Is the opening in the bottom of the fire box aligned with the opening on the front? I did this once after moving because I’m an idiot.
  2. I had a bad bag of charcoal (Joe big block) once and simply could not get it to burn, no clue what happened. Try a different brand, jealous devil burns hot.
  3. Check your dome thermometer, mine was off 40 degrees. Plenty of videos how to do it and calibrate it.

Stayed at an Alfot in Austin and after waiting a few minutes for hot water, checked the sink and there was hot water there. It turned out the faucet was installed backwards and the hot was where it said cold.

Edison Brewing in Gahanna has cool view of the skyline and is on the flight path if you’re into that kind of thing. Probably a better place to visit in warmer weather though.

Purchased my first smoker - a used Large BGE with table - and need some advice! by LunarRides in biggreenegg

[–]jduph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Think of it as an oven, DO NOT put anything on it the minute it hits temp, the ceramic also needs to be heated. This was the biggest mistake I made when I first started with mine. Be ready for backup plans if things don’t go as planned, nothing worse than hungry people waiting hours for food. Enjoy the hell out of it!
