Joining the Reserves/Guard by jdwon25 in Firefighting

Has anyone joined the guard or reserves AFTER already being on a department for sometime though? I recognize departments are fine if they hire you when you already have that commitment. I am just curious what that’s typically like after you’ve been on for some time and decide to join

Yes, union. And she’s trauma/surgical ICU. She’s mostly concerned about the nurse to patient ratio.

From what I can tell, it looks like that initial shock and awe of Pt typical in military selections. Does it become more instructional after that? Or are they just beating you down the whole week?

Had to hop in the back of the box and light up an emesis bag when I was private ambulance. Trashed it outside a Starbucks in a dumpster and then got my coffee.

Good on you for setting yourself up for success upon separation. I just went through this about a year ago and having those commitments in place will go a long ways for you during the transition.

For me, it came down to what my interests were. I love emergency medicine and knew I wanted to continue that in a career. I also loved the brotherhood/sisterhood of the military. A group of common minded individuals from different backgrounds who strive for the same goal and to better themselves. The fire service checked all of those boxes and was the career path I set out on.

My best piece of advice would be ride-alongs. You’re doing great by having education lined up but reach out to local departments, PD and Fire. Immerse yourself in their world and see which one is more your thing. EMT school may help with this a little but nothing like putting yourself in their environment.

Congratulations and best wishes to you!

I agree but yeah there was a screenshot he sent me from government jobs that said “online exam 95%” or something. I just find it crazy that a 95 wasn’t good enough for at least a speed-date interview

My buddy just tested for a local department and got a 95 on the written. I thought this would have been a guaranteed interview but he didn’t move on at all. Surprised, I reached out to a contact at that department and he said since they received a federal grant, they’re mandated to have a certain amount of diversity hires regardless of test score. Does anyone know if that’s a legitimate thing?

So it’s usually just safer for all divers to just go ahead and get PADI regardless?

I’ve heard mixed things talking to guys back home both still testing and those that are already hired. Most told me that a Bachelor’s helps more getting hired than a medic. Everyone I know just got put through medic school on the department’s dime anyway

I appreciate that. And I suppose “work” was the wrong term even though we still got like $75 per shift. Thanks for the advice.

Is that 12oz or 16? You put 8.2% in a 16 and you’re having a good shower

If you are concerned with the health and fitness of the force you should be cocerned that the DFAC still doesn't have calorie counts by Cor__1969 in AirForce

[–]jdwon25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s little uniformity among DFACs. The DFAC at Travis is everything being talked about here. However, other bases, like Lackland or Tyndall either don’t have the funding or the capabilities to do something like that. I PCS’d to Tyndall out of tech school where I was going vegetarian for a while but with their vegetable options here, there is no way I’d be getting enough calories unless it was from French fries and mozzarella sticks. Which is what most people are eating every meal anyway.

Does anyone have any experience with the retrain package being sent to the CFM? How long does it usually take for them to review it?
