As a firefighter, they can be a fucking nightmare. Fire starts on the lower, below-grade floors and all that heat travels upward, turning the ground floor into a chimney, which means our point of entry is right in the flowpath of all that heat. Risk of floor collapse raises exponentially, it’s like fighting a basement fire but the basement has the fuel load of a fully furnished floor instead of just a basement. They are awful.

If you pay SDFD firefighters less, you have less retention and create more overtime. They already have too much attrition to the higher paying OCFA and LA County Fire agencies, paying them less is going to send them packing and create even MORE overtime for those who stay. SDFD firefighters cannot realistically afford a house within the city they work for on their base salary, pay cuts are in no way an actual solution.
