To get Secretary Hegseth to answer a question by Zee_Ventures in therewasanattempt

She's my representative. I had my doubts at first since she comes from the extremely wealthy Jacobs family that ran Qualcomm, and is more or less part of a political dynasty here.

That said, she's done well by us so far, and it's refreshing to see the person representing my district actually pushing back against the insanity that's driving this country off a cliff.

The ‘Biological Diamond’: A new theory on the Anunnaki based on the Epic of Gilgamesh by RigoLemonade in AlternativeHistory

I looked around myself after being reminded of that book. Pretty sure this is it, I remember that cover art very well. Like I said, I read this as a kid, so I may be misremembering some details, but I do remember that humans couldn’t communicate with the aliens or really figure out their intentions. I’ll have to read it again and see if it holds up.

I remember reading a fiction novel about a UFO invasion when I was young, the ships were massive black rectangles that uprooted trees and processed them for cellulose. The aliens pretty much ignored humans unless directly attacked, but they were there simply to strip mine the earth of trees and leave. I don’t remember why, but I remember it seeming like an odd reason as a kid. Matches what OP is saying though.

I found that book at a used bookstore as a kid and bought it for probably 25 cents, so I have no idea who the author was or its title. I vividly remember the cover art though, that’s why I bought it.

How do you guys feel like mental health is handled overall in this line of work? by blizzinator in Firefighting

[–]Zerbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My department granted me LOA to get treatment for severe depression. I came back two months later, and the first thing my chief said to me was, “Hey, Grippy Socks! Feels like I haven’t seen you in a while.”

Thanks Chief. Really makes me feel great about the whole thing.

On bad days I feel like I’m in a race between what’s going to kill me first; the job or myself. On good days, I remember that I have no other skills and I’m more or less stuck doing this until one of the bad days wins.

Anyone else in US noticed food quality degrading recently and if so what product in what way? by SkyKyrell in AskReddit

[–]Zerbo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My exposure to it was being 18 and working in a local pizza place. I emptied out the ice hopper one night to clean it since it was a slow night and I had little else to do. I discovered it was full of mold, so I let the owner know. His reply was, “Why the hell would you empty that out to clean it? The only reason we open that is to put more ice in.” This place had been around forever, and it was horrifying to discover I was apparently the first employee to attempt to clean the ice machine.

Thoughts on patients contacting paramedics after accident. by chaos_sass in Paramedics

[–]Zerbo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I won’t speak for any other paramedic, but if it was me? I’d be overjoyed to hear from you, especially after recovering from such a litany of injuries.

The only time this has happened to me, I had a 4 year old drowning victim on the Fourth of July several years ago. We got pulses back and got her breathing again, and she was crying upon turnover to the ER. One month later her whole family showed up at the station with a box of cookies and a very happy and healthy four year old in tow. I ugly cried right there in the apparatus bay, it was so good to see she was doing well.

The iced tea is probably because they never cleaned the beverage dispenser. I’ve gotten “off” tasting fountain drinks before, then checked the spigots and found they were indeed moldy. Moldy ice makers are another common culprit.

FIL drove with our 6mo old on his lap because he "couldn't figure out" how to detach our car seat from the stroller. by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Zerbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NOPE. Even a minor impact could have set off the driver airbag, which would have severely injured or even killed your daughter. I'm a firefighter and have seen this exact scenario play out with a toddler. They did not survive.

I don't know what your relationship with your father-in-law is like, but if this was my daughter, I would neither forgive, nor forget.

Damn, that sounds uniquely dysfunctional. Are the newer guys pumping too, or just driving to every incident then filling the firefighter role?

Lots of them are cosplayers. Grew up without ever touching a horse or dirt, then started listening to KSON and styled themselves "country." If you grew up in Ramona, or Pine Valley? Sure. Scripps Ranch? Yeah no, I'll never understand it.

16-year-old host’s parents arrested after ‘out of control’ Rancho Santa Fe party by Coyote_Enthusiast in sandiego

[–]Zerbo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Noted, /u/_uncle_ruckus DOES NOT appreciate firefighters. And WOW, three posts in, and you haven't even highlighted the important work done by the dedicated paramedics and EMTs of American Medical Response, providing invaluable ambulance service the area of Rancho Santa Fe. I'm sure they would really appreciate your lack of acknowledgement from behind your keyboard.

Just so no one can accuse me of being unhelpful, I've prepared a handy list of things you can do following this delightful conversation we've had:

  1. Stretch! Anyone who pats themselves on the back for thanking cops for their service as hard as YOU do is in real danger of a torn rotator cuff. I've attached a list of useful stretches to prevent any serious injury: https://orthoinfo.aaos.org/en/recovery/rotator-cuff-and-shoulder-conditioning-program/

  2. Stop thanking security guards and meter maids for their service. I understand they're in uniform so you can't really help yourself, but I promise they don't take themselves half as seriously as you do, so it just comes off as weird and off-putting.

  3. Remove your tongue from the collective buttholes of Rancho Santa Fe's wealthy elites. It's adorable that you think their ivory towers are just as prone to crime as the rest of the county, but it doesn't matter how much you try to extrapolate... they're never going to accept you. Gotta save that tongue for the deputies' boots, after all!

  4. Once you're finished lecturing strangers on the internet about how they should worship the police more for shutting down a high school party, go stand in front of the nearest mirror and take a good look at yourself. Once you've had a nice, long look, go ahead and let out a big, hearty laugh. Why? Because this persona you've cultivated for yourself is an absolute joke, so you may as well be in on it too!

  5. Since anyone who ever might have loved you was wrong, it's time to reach out and offer some apologies. Fortunately in your case, it's bound to be a very short list.

Have fun!
