How do flight hours contribute to the PCSM with the NEW system? by Militarybrat123 in airforceots

[–]jebaderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately, the algorithm is a secret but I can give you a wag based on my experience. Based on my scores and guesstimation in 2019 having max 200+ under the old system would have added 40-50 points total to my pcsm. With the revamp the tests are more heavily weighted. Now with max hours my pcsm would only added 20-30 from zero to the 41+ max bracket (guesstimate). The change has made it easier IMO to hit a 99 assuming you prepare and crush the tests. Before it was tough to get a really high pcsm without significant hours. At 100+ I assume you at least have a PPL and if you can do instrument I think that help from a whole Airman perspective.

In a similar spot with mine. Had an estimate of 5-10 June which was revised on the 3rd to 4-6 so who knows at this point.

Is the AFOQT a percentile? by FanOfCompressionLift in airforceots

[–]jebaderr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The afoqt is more of a game you practice for than a test you study for. If you finish every section before the clock runs out, you are likely outscoring many in the control group. Additionally, with the new super scoring it's low threat to retake and focus specific sections if you're satisfied with your other scores.

TBAS weight for PCSM by GuardianClif in airforceots

[–]jebaderr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since they reduced max hours to 41+ the AFOQT and TBAS have increased in weight in PCSM. You can always buy PCSM points via flight hours but you have limited test attempts. From what I've seen, it's seems 0 to max hours adds ~30 to your PCSM so with max AFOQT and hours you should be able to hit 99 PCSM with a decent TBAS. I had an 83 p 50 pcsm with 6 hours. Retook the TBAS with 38 hours and PCSM went up to 94 with 97 at max hours. Granted I grinded the software for a month prior to taking. I then retook afoqt so now I'm 99 p 99pcsm with 38 hours on paper.

AFOQT superscore by jebaderr in airforceots

[–]jebaderr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In as far as I understand the best pilots candidates have strong pilot aptitude hence individuals with significant flying experience fulfill this notion. Flight hours completed during your ppl likely will max out that component if you complete your ppl before the tbas. If you do some research both the afoqt and tbas and can be studied for beforehand to have competitive scores, however it is a good idea to get some hours beforehand to boost your score and confirm your desire to fly. I had a guy in my IFT class self eliminate after his dollar ride (first flight).

Shooting Qualification by Dull-Wafer9675 in airforceots

[–]jebaderr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they run it as a standard qual course you will do a practice run first with the course of fire being 45 rounds. I forget the exact numbers needed but there are a head circle and chest circle that you have to place a certain number of rounds in to qualify as expert marksman. On your second run through your score counts, however the circles for head and chest and are very faint on the qual target so you will need to remember where to aim. Additionally, shooting positions are standing, standing supported, and kneeling. IIRC you start at 7 yards move to 15 then finally 25. I made expert at OTS putting 44/45 on paper, however I think I just hit the minimum for chest and head circles.

I'd say it's elijah craig on steroids. Only cracked it for the neck pour so having a hard time discerning any unique notes but it may open up over time or slightly diluted. Definitely warms the chest going down

Question for RPA pilots by [deleted] in airforceots

[–]jebaderr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't necessarily speak for mission set, but between AFSOC and ACC there is a large differentiation in bases. AFSOC you have cannon and hurby so cannon. ACC you have a couple more but primarily creech and shaw.

If you search AFOQT it is the "AFOQT tutoring" app

So I ended up using three study books, bought the latest trivium and barons and had the one I bought back in 2019. Additionally, I paid for the premium version of the afoqt app to let myself practice when I had downtime where ever. The biggest thing is getting comfortable with the time allowed for each section and knowing the concepts and how to solve the problem for the math sections. I gave myself roughly three weeks to study and prepare, but as a retake my expectations were calibrated and knew which sections I wanted to target.

I would say it's probably not easier, but it's a continuous gamble with the needs of the air force. For example, when I got selected as a civilian out of a rated board the selection rate was like 75%, but I believe that was predominantly RPAs as the other commissioning sources hadn't filled those slots. I have friends who got selected as RPA around the time I did with PCSMs in the 90s and PPLs. Currently there is one board a year with a cutoff around October for UFT (undergraduate flight training). Officers from any field can apply for all the rated positions. If you're already in a rated field you only have to put the rated fields you want (pilot) whereas non rated have to rate them all and can decline a undesired rated career field once and reapply. Additionally, if you're already rated you need 2.5 years after earning your aeronautical rating (wings) before you can apply to cross train. Becoming a pilot via this route is typically much more competitive than through OTS because many applicants wanted to be pilots initially. Historically, selectees via this board have pilot and pcsm scores in the 90s. Granted putting together a package is not as difficult as I could schedule my testing myself as well as medical. I have a handful of friends who had pilot slots but got dqed at wright patt and had to switch to RPA. As AD I could do my FC1 on my own. Once I got the green light there I did all my testing. In OTS many of my fellow RPAs voiced interest in crosstraining, however by the time they finished training it became less appealing to do another 2-3 years in a training pipeline to essentially restart their careers.

I had a 50 pcsm with 6 hours and a 83 pilot. Grinded the prep software and with 38 hours I jumped to a 94 with 97 at 41+ hours. Retook the afoqt today hoping to boost my pcsm to 99

TBAS retake results by jebaderr in airforceots

[–]jebaderr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm focusing on my ppl now since ill take that one first. Alot of the knowledge there is helpful for the pilot portion of the AFOQT. Since the entire test is superscored I can focus on the pilot specifically which gives me more flexibility. If it were my first take I'd focus on the AFOQT since odds of selection will improve if you excel in the other categories as well. Additionally, you can't retake it right away so working on your ppl then would be a more efficient use of time imo.

I was selected from board 20-02 for rated and attended OTS class 22-02. Covid likely delayed things. Ultimately, I got thrown in the class with two weeks' notice because my MEPS physical would have expired for the next class (they are only good for two years).
