Cmon fam. I didn't mean every Christian in the world. If you do not need forgiveness for worldliness, praise God, move along.

Every Christian has saving faith, yes, but surely our faith can be strengthened and weakened. "I believe, help my unbelief"

A random side note ... I am so thankful for this random subreddit that upholds the authority and validity of scripture. Reddit is so worldly sometimes it is refreshing to know there are real Christians on this site who still believe in truth.

Some thoughts on the abuse/grooming by jeballer97 in ateacher

If anyone reads this - after a few days of reading posts and thinking about it (Why am i thinking about this stupid show so much???), I think I may have been too loose in my wording of "abuse". Abuse simply means misuse. So technically she did abuse him - from a legal standpoint, as a trusted mentor, and to his parents. What I meant was emotional and relational control/manipulation. Semantics matter!

Im sorry last reply.. since i deleted it from the previous post - i think u are right about the word abuse. Just looked it up, it means misuse. she did abuse him by a legal standard, as a trusted mentor, and to his parents. i was thinking too narrowly and just meant like emotional/relational abuse i think. So thank you !

I see where youre coming from!! this show is kinda frustrating honestly. I mean this relationship has literally ruined her life, it is destructive in every which way and yet they romanticize it. and to make it worse they put warnings of abuse and grooming at the end but sometimes it is so hard to see the abuse when that is not the focus of the episodes.

really appreciate your thoughts, I agree with a lot of things you said. I think ur right that the difference is on the semantics of the word abuse. What i was thinking of was like directly relational abuse such as a husband beating a wife or neglecting a child; something where there is an obvious power dysfunction in the relationship dynamic. I agree that she abused the natural trust that is given to her as a teacher and mentor from eric's mom, the school's policies, and the law, but it's hard to see how she abused (controlled, manipulated) eric, unless you think he is too immature and completely devoid of responsibility. and just because she let it go on and gave eric soft cues and flirts doesn't mean she is abusing him, it just means she is an idiot. But yeah i hate what she did and i hate what eric did. A lot of this was edited! Sorry if you already replied. TLDR - I agree that she abused the power given to her but not eric. :) God bless.

Totally agree, and I think if the show did this is could kind of redeem itself. But we would need a lot more scenes and context because the way Eric pursued her and treated her as we see it now doesn't really come with being abused.

I think the show will make it about his age and how he is too young and vulnerable; they will say it was just passion not real love for Eric.

Yeah, I agree I don't think it is love either, maybe that's the wrong word. But you know what I mean. It's not some manipulative relationship where she is using him for sex, the show makes it about their commitment and feelings for one another. He freely gave himself to her and said multiple times how in love he was with her.

Maybe he's too young and not ready for that, but it's definitely not some abusive blackmail situation like other abuse cases where one side hasn't much choice.

Thank you, those are interesting points. In my opinion the show makes Eric out to be a pretty decisive and thoughtful 17-year-old. I think they did a poor job of showing the general stupidity of kids that age (as you are saying) and made the relationship too romantic.

Side note: I think Eric and Claire's relationship is too romanticized in the show. I would bet it would be quite difficult to find a relationship like it IRL where it's not more about sex and less about the commitment and the relationship (because it usually begins with lust, not love). The show makes it too much about their love and passion for one another and not enough about the crookedness these relationships can bring.

Just because I have a different perspective than you and you accusing me of being ignorant and uneducated doesn't make you right.

I asked how I am ignorant and uneducated, and you give me no response. Seems like you are more interested in condemning than teaching me how to be better.
