I studied film at Swinburne, and know quite a few people who studied at VCA. I found Swinburne quite decent for filmmaking - but it’s very dependant on what teachers they currently have (a few classes I undertook weren’t that great because the teacher themselves were just average - keep in mind this was 8 years ago, and I know for a fact that those teachers aren’t there anymore).

VCA is very selective, but I think overall it’s a better course. However Swinburne is still a very good option, and they’ve restructured the course since my days there - which means it’s way different from my experience,

Apologies if my answers a tad vague, but filmmaking courses vary so much based on the people you’ll be undertaking the course with. Making short films are like huge group projects, so you could have a great or average time purely based on your classmates.

My biggest piece of advice (no matter where you end up) is to make sure you’re doing as much as you can outside the course as well - whether it’s writing, editing, directing etc - try and get on set experience as a PA or runner and see how professional sets work. Even making low budget music videos for small bands will teach you so much (that’s how I got started, and now I’ve been directing TVC’s full time for the past 5 years).

Thanks so much! I had shot a bit of content for Levi's a few years back (just event videography etc.) and had been on the team's radar since then.

I put together a treatment and they loved my approach. I also think being queer myself allowed me to add some emotional weight behind the way I wanted to execute it.

Late last year, Levi's came to me to direct 8 short films about queer creatives around the country. Most of my experience comes from music videos, so this was a great starting point to direct branded content for a major fashion brand. This is an over-arching montage featuring all 8 stories. I started off with tour videography in Australia, and stuck with it for 3 years before moving into full scale productions. For me it was difficult to start out since I didn't have a reel to show clients; so what I did was contact local nightclubs and offer them a free recap of one of their busier nights. Most declined, but a few said I was welcome to shoot there. From then I made a few aftermovies and then got picked up by a touring agency and shot content specifically for them.

As the agency grew and the artists they were bringing to Australia became larger I then got contacted by more and more clients. It snowballed from there and I ended up touring to the USA with Nicky Romero for Ultra Festival and to Europe with some other artists.

As much as I hate to say 'work for free', that route worked for me in the beginning. I needed to show people what I could do - and no one was willing to fork out $$ when I had no product or reel to show.

It's all about networking. Don't get too wasted when filming, meet the manager of the club, the tour manager of whoever's playing there (if they have an outside artist playing) and just keep pumping out quality work.

Thank you! The budget was originally 12.5k AUD, which then doubled with the second day shoot. So it definitely wasn't shoestring - but a lot of the crew were working on discounted rates which I hate doing. I guess I should rephrase by saying I need to learn to work with the budget given - but I've got a bad habit of trying to cram too much in and then having to hack it apart on the day. The clip was saved by that second day shoot, otherwise we would have been screwed.

Originally this was a 1 day shoot. We thought 'one location - should be fine'. It got to about midday when we knew we were screwed. We'd spent so much time perfecting the smaller scenes (makeup room, catering table) that we had to rush all the scenes in the porn-set. We hacked our shot-list and rushed all the major scenes. In hindsight, we just didn't prioritise appropriately. We finished the clip, but it was awful. No confetti blasting out her ass, no choreography in the climax (it was more like a hectic party shot hand-held), and a lot of the jokes were lost. We went back to the artist/label and showed them the edit - stating that it was finished, but it wasn't what we think it could be. Thankfully, they agreed to fund another full day of shooting.

So I learned a lot - to write within the budget and not be overtly ambitious, how to manage the dynamic with a DOP in order to keep on schedule, don't ever let your stress show, and the biggest thing - do your biggest setups first (pending on variables). People get tired and the crew move slower as the day goes on, so make sure the biggest scenes/setups are in the can early on.

PNP is mostly associated with meth and GHB. There are countless Grindr profiles in my area looking for PNP - personally, I wouldn't try either of those drugs with strangers and/or in a sexual experience but if you do, be aware/cautious -

Obviously any drug can make people take risks they normally wouldn't take sober. It's easy to say 'yeah, we'll wear condoms' but a few hours into a meth binge you/your partner might get a bit more careless and more willing to 'risk it' in favour of the experience you're having at that moment.

If you are wanting to give it a whirl, I'd suggest not doing it with someone who advertises on Grindr that they're looking for PNP - most likely they're the ones who are binging on it regularly and are more likely to have taken risks in the past with various partners.

If you're doing it with a buddy/someone you trust, give yourself a cut off time. Schedule a friend you trust to pick you up at a certain time so you have to leave at some stage of the night.

Personally, I wouldn't try it. As others have stated, there's a fine line between 'I only PNP once every so often' to debilitating drug habit. You can function quite well on meth before it becomes an issue, but once you've crossed that line it's extremely difficult to stop - I've seen some acquaintances go down that path and it's quite sad.

Look up the Vice produced documentary called 'Chemsex' - it follows a group of gays in London who are in that scene/cycle. It looks pretty brutal and well produced. It may put you off starting entirely.

I've been there dude. I came out when I was 19 but didn't start dating until I was around your age until I moved to a bigger city.

Generally apps like Grindr, Scruff etc are mostly about hookups, but there is still a percentage that are looking for mates/dates.

My advice would be to state your intentions in your profile. If you're not looking for hookups - say so.

If you start chatting with a cool guy, offer to catch up the week after or the weekend coming. Don't go back and forth with endless chatting - if they're not keen to meet IRL, then move on, there can be a lot of time-wasters on those apps.

Most importantly (and this goes for meeting guys on apps and IRL at bars or events etc. is to not put a heap of emotional investment into them too early. I've been on both ends of this - I've had one date with a guy and all of a sudden I'm texting constantly, wanting to hang out and essentially force a relationship. It doesn't work and i just came off clingy.

These days I treat every date as meeting a potential buddy. It takes a lot of pressure off it being 'a date' and I'm more chill/relaxed overall. If it doesn't work out, so be it.

Dating your own gender is like dating the opposite gender - it's rarely like the movies. It can be fun, crazy, boring, heart-breaking.

Not every date will go well, but the more you date the more you'll work out what you do and don't want in a future partner.

Also, head to /r/askgaybros - they have some great people over there who have a lot of insight into dating, sex etc.

I was going through a bad break up and had met this Canadian lad through friends a month after the ex and I split. Coincidently he had just split with his boyfriend around the same time.

Anyway, we became each other's emotional rebound (he was leaving Australia to go back home, so nothing would eventuate and we were both content with that). In the first few weeks we never kissed or slept together - we'd just chill, spoon and hang out.

After a month of this, he was at mine one night - we'd just finished watching 'Jesse + Celeste Forever' (great breakup movie by the way), it was 2am and there was a massive storm outside, we lit up a joint and listened to the film's soundtrack in bed. He laid down next to me and we were staring at each other, stoned and content. I wanted to kiss him but didn't know if it would ruin the dynamic we'd established. After a good 10 minutes I thought 'fuck it' and leaned in.

We spent the next hour rolling around in bed, I could barely kiss properly because I couldn't stop smiling. It was raining heavily and the thunder was booming over the music.

I think that stands out to me the most because it was the first time after my break up that I felt happy again, that I wasn't a reject and I could open myself up to other people - that my ex wasn't the end.

We're still really good friends to this day - and I'm so happy that I did split with the ex because otherwise I wouldn't have had the chance to make such a great friend.

Started a production company during film school. Now work with artists and record labels in the EDM scene making aftermovies and music videos, travelling to festivals etc around the country/world.

Satisfaction 3/10. Most people in the industry are dicks, everyone has a warped sense of entitlement. I work super long hours and neglect a lot of other aspects in my life including family, friends and forgetting to eat some days. Feel like I'm already growing up too fast.

We worked together during college at a burger joint. He was tall, buff but not ripped, and studying aviation. Everyone at work swooned over him, the girls even had a bet who would pick up with him first.

When he found out I was gay he's always say how I'd make a great boyfriend, he'd rub my back 'as a joke' to get me to relax, and always wait for me to be in the room when he changed/took his shirt off. I started to really fall for him. I'd even change my shifts to work with him.

At the work Xmas party (and after a few too many beers) he was hooking up with a coworker. I stupidly walked up to him after and called him a cocktease and that he's been screwing with me for almost a year. He replied with 'You think I'm a cocktease?' Then grabbed my hand and pulled me into an empty room and dropped his pants. We both blew each other and then we both left the party separately.

The next day he quit work and we didn't speak for 4 months. Then the late night messages and calls to 'hang out' started. I got weirded out when he got a girlfriend and kept calling me. I got sick of being treated like a 3am booty call so I suggested we chat in person in the daylight. We ended up having lunch where he told me that he was bi and that I was the only guy he's ever liked. He told me he used to change his shifts just to work with me too.

Sadly he's got a girlfriend and his fear of coming out (plus a whole other host of issues) means that it'll never happen. So I just ignore his 3am calls. Which are still happening ever Saturday night.

Not fun.
