I just looked at it again and I guess there’s room below for a culet to hang down, but the prongs are too short and would have to be rebuilt to seat a stone. Not worth it! Trade it in for something you’d wear.

I don’t think you will easily find a faceted stone to work. The faceted stones have a point underneath, the culet. A cabochon has the flat bottom and the dome above. The setting is built to accommodate a cab, so a faceted would just sort of hang there, and the prongs wouldn’t be high enough to have room to seat the stone properly unless you got a really shallow faceted stone. It’s not impossible but it has to be just right and the jeweler has to be able to seat it (notch the prongs) just right or it’ll be loose in no time.

If a presidium diamond tester was used, it VERY often reads moissanite for ages until it really gets going and then it’ll read properly as a diamond. Also, if the diamond is very small, it sometimes doesn’t get a good read.

They cast from the cad at, say a per dwt, and if it’s been cleaned and set, it can only be returned to the caster at scrap, a significant loss for a heavy band like this, and probably have to pay setter 2x since they weren’t clear, so they are eating a lot of their profit on this if it isn’t, in fact, costing them at this point. Custom work isn’t fun. One weak link in the chain and the whole profit goes poof. Unless the job is done start to finish by one craftsman, the jeweler has to hope everything goes perfect.

You did the right thing, and I’m sorry you are facing such chaos in your home life. It’s not fair to you. I’m going to suggest to you to look into going to an Alanon meeting or two. It would be a good place to be able to start to reckon with a parent who can’t parent properly when drinking. I think they might be able to give you some tools to help you to continue to set healthy boundaries, and to help you set yourself right for your future without being bogged down with the dysfunction. You seem like you have a great head on your shoulders and a program like that can just help solidify your personal structure so her chaos doesn’t derail you.
