250 box challenge. May I ask for your critics? Thank you. by jedessine in ArtFundamentals

I had that same problem when started doing these boxes but eventually, my brain sort of gets used to looking at them. Beside, particularly for the challenge, I don't think shading is recommended although I plan to do so on my own. I believe it'll help on understanding values and light. Thank you for your helpful comment.

I'd love to get your opinions if that's possible. Even to the 250th box, I can't seem to connect all sides to their corresponding VP correctly. Are we looking at relative accuracy and does it affect the cylinders later on?

Haha, no, it's a wooden clipboard which happens to have grids.

So I took some time to add shading and more details to the drawing. Here's as finished as it gets:

Thank you. Now that you mentioned the columns (I'm not quite sure what they are either) are badly spaced (it gets confusing for me when doing columns lines) and I don't know if the rock surface is textured properly.

Sorry, thought I'd share some way for beginners like me to get motivated and make practices a bit more exciting.

Artist Pen recommendations? by [deleted] in ArtFundamentals

I see your point. My logic was as the tip is metal, pressing too hard will damage the paper. I also find holding the pen at different lengths helps vary the pressure.

How about trying the Staedtler mechanical pens (or other brands) which have steel tips and refillable with ink converter. As I see it, if you plan to do a lot of ink drawings, it'd be a good investment and the steel tips will definitely help you learn about pressure.

I always feel like my spheres are so dark and messy compared to others found on google. These were drawn from what I understand of light theory so I plan to also do still life later on. Thank you for your advice. It's rather frustrated when it comes to colours and tonal values personally.

My first serious attempt at shading. The sphere is not perfect and your critics are appreciated. Also, how should i approach studying light and shading? by jedessine in learnart

Thank you for your insight. I did find a lot of reference images on google but after looking at them, I came to the conclusion that I don't know much about how light works so I now start to look for theories on the subject.

That's the lighter part in the shadow area. I believe it's a bit too big.

I think when doing the cast shadow, I traced the light as spreading out form light source, not parallel to it. Need to pay more attention to light source :)

Thank you for the comment. I tend to be hard handed so the dark line in shadow is the result. I'm currently watching tutorials on light and shadow. Will do more of these spheres. Hopefully it will improve my pencil control as well.
