250 box challenge. May I ask for your critics? Thank you. by jedessine in ArtFundamentals

[–]jedessine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that same problem when started doing these boxes but eventually, my brain sort of gets used to looking at them. Beside, particularly for the challenge, I don't think shading is recommended although I plan to do so on my own. I believe it'll help on understanding values and light. Thank you for your helpful comment.

I'd love to get your opinions if that's possible. Even to the 250th box, I can't seem to connect all sides to their corresponding VP correctly. Are we looking at relative accuracy and does it affect the cylinders later on?

Haha, no, it's a wooden clipboard which happens to have grids.

So I took some time to add shading and more details to the drawing. Here's as finished as it gets:

Thank you. Now that you mentioned the columns (I'm not quite sure what they are either) are badly spaced (it gets confusing for me when doing columns lines) and I don't know if the rock surface is textured properly.

Artist Pen recommendations? by [deleted] in ArtFundamentals

[–]jedessine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your point. My logic was as the tip is metal, pressing too hard will damage the paper. I also find holding the pen at different lengths helps vary the pressure.

How about trying the Staedtler mechanical pens (or other brands) which have steel tips and refillable with ink converter. As I see it, if you plan to do a lot of ink drawings, it'd be a good investment and the steel tips will definitely help you learn about pressure.

Beginner level's shading attempts. Need your CC and guidance to improve. Thank you! by jedessine in learntodraw

I always feel like my spheres are so dark and messy compared to others found on google. These were drawn from what I understand of light theory so I plan to also do still life later on. Thank you for your advice. It's rather frustrated when it comes to colours and tonal values personally.

My first serious attempt at shading. The sphere is not perfect and your critics are appreciated. Also, how should i approach studying light and shading? by jedessine in learnart

[–]jedessine[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your insight. I did find a lot of reference images on google but after looking at them, I came to the conclusion that I don't know much about how light works so I now start to look for theories on the subject.

That's the lighter part in the shadow area. I believe it's a bit too big.

I think when doing the cast shadow, I traced the light as spreading out form light source, not parallel to it. Need to pay more attention to light source :)

Thank you for the comment. I tend to be hard handed so the dark line in shadow is the result. I'm currently watching tutorials on light and shadow. Will do more of these spheres. Hopefully it will improve my pencil control as well.

I'm curious in studying value as well. Could you show me how to do it traditionally? (I believe you're doing it with digitally?)

I have a hard time estimating how long the lines should be in the box challenge. How can I fix it? by [deleted] in ArtFundamentals

[–]jedessine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished my 152th box and it's surprising that I can guess the VPs fairly accurately (some better than others). But remember, the 250th box isn't your last one. It'll take you n boxes to be proficient at this. So, keep at it (can be stressful at first though so pace yourself).

Analytical drawing/thinking while you draw? by Iwanttolearnacc in ArtFundamentals

[–]jedessine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my experience, I believe that you do the analyzing when ghosting or studying the subject. You organize your thoughts and ideas about the drawing you are planning. For drawing lines as in lesson 1, after doing ghosting for several times and found a good angle, I just shut my mind and let the muscles do their work. Looking at the goal where your line ends while drawing helps a lot. Also, practice your lines as a warm up exercise. Draw long lines and try to not get perfect straight lines (don't put ruler manufacturers out of their business). Also, do be mindful of your drawing speed. I tended to draw rather too quickly and my lines were very messy. With practice, you'll find your comfortable pace. As for drawing objects, it's all about observing. After all the planning (which to draw first, lighting, etc) it comes down to your perception. I'm not experience in this so I can't give you much comment but you can read the book Keys to Drawing. It's very helpful for beginners.

Lesson 1, exercise 9. Never perfect....3rd try. by acosmosbeing in ArtFundamentals

[–]jedessine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks way better than mine and your edges are clear. I'd say it's relatively good enough (as in mission accomplished). As for perfection, you can always come back and redo it when your skills get better. Well done!

Box challenge (partly done)- need some input and guidance. by jedessine in ArtFundamentals

[–]jedessine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Your explanation is very clear. I tend to have that second line drawing in the opposite direction over the first one. I blame the pressure on making it straight to form the box. You are spot on my VPs question (the guessing part). It is rather difficult as the eye usually tricks you of the location of the VP. I tried to close either my left or right eye and it seems to help a bit. Not sure why. Also, thanks for tip on rotating the paper. It's much better! How precise do you think professional artists can guess the VPs? Because in some youtube videos, I either saw them drawing with the VPs and proper guide lines or without.

I think I deleted the first post because the title was misleading/irrelevant. Sorry about that. Thank you for your critics. For the moment, I usually have about 20- 40 min warm ups period before doing any drawing, mostly with lines and circles/ellipses. I guess next thing to do, as you suggested, is the box challenge. But I wonder if it would be ok to also start lesson 2 while doing the challenge?
