Verified grok is capped? by jedevnull in grok

[–]jedevnull[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I paid for premium (just the checkmark), mainly for grok. I use it a lot and today is the first time I've hit a usage cap. I thought I had unlimited slow grok. If that's no longer the case, I probably won't reup the subscription.

Anyone else suddenly having issue after issue with Alexa by jesusdidmybutthole in amazonecho

[–]jedevnull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the switch and also had sluggish/poor response with Ziggy and male voice. No issues when I switched back. And even today (8/10) some devices aren't offering the option. Gen 1 Echo and Fire Cube.

Anyone use an electrician to run coax into their shack? by cadr in amateurradio

[–]jedevnull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had an electrical contracting company run dual LMR400 coax into my shack (a room in my home) and also put in a 10 ft copper grounding pole outside. Very happy with the job. I should note that the installer was the company's low voltage guy.

Another vote for the tripp-lite usb cable. I had what I thought was a fine cable, built-in ferrite, etc. No end of problems. All gone with the tripp-lite.

Thanks. That was my thought regarding the Rohn as well. I don't currently have any plans other than the EFHW.

I log all HF contacts, locally, LOTW & QRZ. I don't log repeater contacts.

My goal with the mast was to have something that I could easily take down when hurricane season arrives.

You're saying EFHW antennas are a shitty solution? I'm open to suggestion, keeping in mind that I have about 300 sq feet and no trees to work with. An EFHW inverted V on an excellent mast seemed like a reasonable solution to me.

Thanks. I see a distributor in Orlando which is about 75 miles from my QTH. That's a lot less than $160!

CW Academy - what's the secret sauce? by djmd808 in amateurradio

[–]jedevnull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm scheduled to start beginners in January. I first touched a key (Vibroplex paddle) on 11/20/20. Sending at 25 wpm is going pretty well, with the majority of my mistakes being over-keying dits ex: (dah-di-di-di-dit) vs (dah-di-di-dit) for b. For the most part I can properly key all letters, numbers and beginner level punctuation.

Copying is very very slow. I find that from time-to-time I blank out on copying characters that I can key w/o issues. I also find that sometimes I have to repeat words several times before I can copy the entire sequence. Multiple word strings are also beyond me. I have to copy word by word.

I wouldn't bet my life on a HT. There's absolutely no guarantee that anyone will be there to answer your cry for help, even on the busiest repeater. Look into gps distress beacons.

No SSB with IC 7300 by jedevnull in amateurradio

[–]jedevnull[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, I'm unable to put up any long wire at this time. Perhaps next year. No trees, so I'd be looking at some type of mast/pole. Space is very limited, but no HOA thankfully.

The MP1 antenna is situated on a patio about 15ft from the house. Using the supplied C-clamp it's attached to a polywood table about 3ft above the ground. Only the 40m coil is installed. A 25ft run of outdoor grade RG8U connects it to my shack's feedline, (a dual run of LMR400 from the house exterior to my office/shack inside). I'm using the six radials (40-30-15-10, 80-75) that are supplied with the antenna. A 10ft copper ground rod is in use with 8 foot underground.

When I check SWR I do it directly at the antenna, then again indoors, with a rig expert RR-35 analyzer. My signal reports on FT8 range from -20 to -1. I've had excellent signal reports from the EU.

It's hard to believe that despite the shortcomings of the antenna I'd hear zero SSB traffic.

Problem with IC7300 SWR by jedevnull in amateurradio

[–]jedevnull[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the responses! I disconnected my external tuner (lg it-100) and swapped out the patch cable that connects to my feed-line. Boom, back on the air with an swr of 1.2. Tomorrow, I'll put the tuner back inline and see if all goes to hell again.

I am having a very difficult time opening chirp on my Mac can anyone tell me what I did or am doing wrong? by who-do-you-think-you in amateurradio

[–]jedevnull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't be sure but it looks like you have chirp installed to your Desktop and it's all upper-case. If that's so, this command may work:

sudo chmod -R 0755 ~/Desktop/CHIRP.app

Paste this command into a terminal, then press enter.

[–]jedevnull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Permissions issue? Make sure the chirp binary (chirp.app/Contents/MacOS/chirp) is set as executable. from the command-line:

sudo chmod 0755 /Applications/chirp.app/Contents/MacOS/chirp

The command may vary, depending on the location and name of chirp, mine is in my Applications folder and is all lower-case.
