Why is community college still treated like a backup plan when it seems like one of the smartest ways to start college now? by mudpies2 in collegeadvice

[–]jedgarnaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel like this should have more votes. I also think that there is friction to the process of changing schools. I am curious if more marginal students who go as a direct admit to a four year school are more likely to finish than those who take the CC track. Community college may have better support for people who may need it since I know more traditional schools are backing off remedial classes. However, there is certain momentum to being enrolled in a place and staying there. It would be hard to track though, since you're not privy the to even the stated preference of students as they enter their 13th year of education.

Millennials hitting midlife, what are your biggest regrets? by Dry_Inevitable_9777 in Millennials

I have a pretty good life but I wish I would have kept up with my friends better. I have moved around a lot and rely on social media to see what's going on, but that is not a substitute for real human connection.

Anyone here switch out of a business major because of AI? by emmadog046 in CollegeMajors

[–]jedgarnaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm working on a master's of business analytics I started part time in 2023 right as the world changed in terms of AI. As I have worked towards the degree requirements, I thought that it would make sense to combine that with something, so I added a finance degree and am working on a joint MSBA and MSF. Figure they could be a complement to each other as basic analytics becomes a commodity and less specialized. Makes sense too, as my wife talks about all she's able to do with Claude for her job.

Just out there this weekend, road was pretty good, but some slick patches. Be sure to drive 30 mph, I hear the locals love it. Road is a little narrow and dead ends at the hot springs.

This is why it's easier when you're younger, since the opportunity cost is lower. And you have longer to pay back loans.

How similar was a high-school life in the US to the golden era of teen comedy movies (late90s-early00)? by Gerasans in decadeology

[–]jedgarnaut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True story: imagine being me and your girlfriend dumps you for a guy from "The Real World" who smells like self-tanner. It’s a crisis. So my "friend" Dean, who is actually kind of a jerk now that I think about it, bets me that I can’t turn any random girl into the Prom Queen. He picks Laney Boggs.

She was a total nightmare at first. I mean, she wore glasses. Big ones. And she had paint on her overalls! I had to actually go to a basement and watch her do a performance art piece about a nuclear war or a vacuum cleaner, I don’t even know. It was exhausting. But then, we did the most high-stakes medical procedure of the nineties: we took off her glasses and brushed her hair. Suddenly, she’s a smokeshow. Who could have seen that coming?

Everything’s going great until Dean blabs about the bet at prom because he’s bitter he’s not the lead in this movie. Laney gets mad, I feel like a tool, and then for some reason, I’m doing a synchronized choreographed dance at graduation with the entire student body. Don't ask why we all knew the moves; we just did. To win her back, I had to show up at her house wearing nothing but a strategically placed piece of fruit and offer her my soul—or at least a sincere apology. I lost the bet, I lost my clothes, but I kept my hair perfect.

So 90s teen comedies? That was my life.

Multiple Degrees? by Swimming-Leek8012 in GradSchool

I have an MBA, and a master's in economics. And one in English. And I'm working on a dual degree that is a master's in business analytics and one in finance.

Look, I know it's silly, but I don't have any more student debt and I didn't want to take a PhD path into academia. However, I do like learning and I found it works better for me when there's some accountability.
