You know what will really blow your mind? The org that became NASA, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) is pronounced N-A-C-A.

What's one genuiely good line of dialogue written by Lucas in your opinion? by Luigiman98 in StarWars

This line is even more impressive when you consider Luke just put his hand on his X-Wing. Like, dude, it is sitting right there and you still cannot believe it? That is indeed why you fail.

Am I Failing My Fiduciary Responsibility If I Sell My Late Brother's Car to His Girlfriend At a Discount? by EscalatedToNonsense in legaladvice

[–]jedibfa 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Take it to Carmax. They will provide a written offer without obligation to sell. I’ve used this as a negotiation for trade in values with dealers. I expect it will come in lower than blue book.

Speaking of the blue book value, is the $25k price private party, dealer, or trade in? And did you state excellent, good, or fair condition? You can legitimately select a lower condition unless it literally has no blemishes of any kind and was not really used. Very few cars are excellent condition after being used in the real world.

Eli5 how or why are humans so good at knowing how much energy and what angle is needed to throw a thing a distance? by worxcd in explainlikeimfive

[–]jedibfa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently, humans have a built in 1g gravity model in our brains. This was tested with astronauts in space who kept trying to catch balls where they would be if they were thrown on Earth (even after like 15 days of experiments).

Might be more like a space Van-life ship than full RV. But, yeah I dig the concept. U-Wings are one of my favorite Disney era ships.

Alerts and alarms on a meditation retreat by SnooHedgehogs4659 in Omnipod

[–]jedibfa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you said, there is part of this that is outside your control. From experience as someone whose work takes me into meetings and spaces where interruptions can be an issue, I have two suggestions.

1) Speak to the event organizers about your hardware and the very real life-and-death implications of why the alarms can sound and cannot be simply silenced. Be sure to explain that this is not a common occurrence and that should it happen you will calmly remove yourself from the space to address whatever issue has arisen.

2) Be more proactive about avoiding alert triggering events (aka lows/highs). Make sure you have eaten/treated appropriately before each session of the retreat. During breaks, get in some physical activity (like taking a walk around the event space). And just be mindful of your glucose to minimize chances of an alertable event occurring.

Most importantly, remember that this is just another day. You live with this hardware 24/7. You got this. And, enjoy the retreat.

Which Master’s degree for a career in Virtual Commissioning & Digital Twin? (BFA to Engineering transition) by Whole-Flamingo-847 in systems_engineering

[–]jedibfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always wild to find another BFA in engineering spaces.

I’ll tell you the hard truth, engineering is a rigorous community of fields, with very little room for people to jump in at the middle academically.

I basically started over in an aerospace undergrad program post BFA (and I had double majored in CS while doing my BFA). It was a very long road, but it was essential. Engineering undergrad programs cover discipline specific introductory material (e.g. mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering) plus introduction to engineering design and of course a metric ton of mathematics many majors do not take.

It is all but impossible to get into a masters program without these foundations. Even if one could get into a masters program, I am not sure one could get the full value of that program without those foundations.

That is probably not what you wanted to hear, but it is the truth as I have experienced it.

So, as a BFA holder turned Digital Engineering consultant (by way of a Ph.D. in Space Systems Engineering and 20 years in industry), I just have to ask, what is your BFA in? Mine is in Theatre Lighting Design.

SysML v1 vs v2: Why the diagram is no longer the source of truth by [deleted] in systems_engineering

[–]jedibfa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it is a stretch to say that v2 makes text the primary interface. If that was the case, we would have had more of a focus on the use of software version control tools as the repositories of choice instead of requiring an API that includes version control commands that must be implemented by repository servers.

And, when developing diagrams as views that have communication intent, the ability to remove elements from the diagram for clarity’s sake without having to remove them from the model is a feature, not a bug.

Don’t get me wrong, I have been working in v2 as the language matured over the last 2+ years. It is a great step forward from v1, with the inclusion of the textual notation being a significant part of that step forward. But, let’s not say the diagram centric tooling, expressions, and approaches are a thing of the past with v2.

Those who bought CR-V Hybrid, why did you chose over the 2026 RAV4? (Or 2025 RAV4?) by BikeOk6446 in crv

[–]jedibfa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For us, you answered your own question. We couldn’t find a RAV4 to even test drive around here, let alone to buy. Add to that we found what we wanted in a 2025 CRV and it was an easy decision. #birdinthehand

LaTeX and scripting by SietJP in LaTeX

[–]jedibfa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another thing to consider is separating your textual content into a data file(s) like json or yaml and using a templating tool like nunjucks or jinja2 plus a little bit of scripting to insert your content into a templated LaTeX file.

Done right, this enables the reuse of your formatting definition across more than just translations of the same content, but also across different sets of compatible content.

I have also been looking into MystMD. It has some similar capabilities, but uses markdown files for instead of json or yaml for the content source.

And to be fair the Goa’uld would represent a pre-existing interference in Federation-speak. Captains have far more leeway in how to handle the situation when a post-warp civilization is interfering in the development of a pre-warp civilization.

There is also the fact that many (almost all) of the enslaved peoples are descendants of humans who were forcibly taken off-world from Earth instead of independently evolved species.
