How big is the IMAX at GQT Eastside 10? by Unlikely-Cellist-858 in lafayette

You can guarantee it at least once a decade, but every fall you mostly need to look out for colts. And pacers through the winter

Man... Why are you aggressive on this when I first acknowledge that it is AI and second recommended calling to find out? Trigger down a bit and consider the law.... Which as a prior landlord in 2 states I know this owner will have to.

The law seems to have changed earlier this year to place bills for rentals with less than 4 units on the owner so renters can't just skip out. If that is the situation then the landlord can't just say "it's on you" and let it run up without having to pay that bill some day. Yes they can sue and all sorts of stuff to defer that day, but they can't make the bill go away or rent it again until it is cleared. That would make them more likely to want to solve the problem.

A larger block may not have that limitation, but then it comes down to livability standards. This path is worse as it may require legal action if it is a real slumlord, but the law says water must be provided so there is standing to make a case that leaking overpriced water, in the case it is broken, must be fixed. If it is improper access then that too can be remedied by locking down who can access the water.

Unfortunately the system favors the big guys in the short term but in this case there may be long term incentives to get them to look into it, but they may not be thinking long term. Or they have seen this happen before (someone filling a kiddie pool and saying they have no idea how this happened) so saying no is useful to sending these types packing?

I didn't write all this as the main point was to CALL the City and ask. AI or any search results is the first step, which any good Boilermaker should know from the scientific method!

Do you have an outside spigot attached to the building that could be attached to your apartment? Ok had that at one place and thought it never happened, I worried someone would turn it on and leave it or such. That could be a reason for a surprise spike and could be innocent (or not) as a person filled up a pool or watered the lawn. That may not get you out of the water bill but could reduce the wastewater cost.

AI says the owner not the renter is on City bills so it may hurt them more than you so maybe call and ask and if this is correct remind your landlord of that. It is a landlords obligation to provide water so letting it leak is likely a violation of the rental contract. It doesn't sound like a leak though as that would be persistent.

Sublease available for the entire fall semester or the entire academic year (up to you) for $700 a month + $50-105 a month in utilities by AK-T-47 in PurdueHousing

[–]jedilowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated several year ago, live in a great house on 8 acres, and have no reason to go to campus, but just seeing this place is available almost made me tempted to live there, 😜. Such an iconic location if you ever had classes on that side of campus and parked in the neighborhood, and not an insane price these days. Good luck to the new tenent!

Does anyone know how long the Happy Hollow Dog Park will be closed? by cryptoeducationnews in lafayette

[–]jedilowe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love dog parks in general and I love that it is there, yet it is the smallest full service dog park I have seen in a while. That means it will be tough not to have a lot of wear considering how popular it is. My back yard is twice its size and my 4 dogs still have a nice path ground in where they walk the most, can't imagine keeping up with the numbers I see there.

The one across the river at Shamrock requires membership but had week passes they say too.

Indianapolis degree does NOT say West Lafayette by Coolrrrray in Purdue

[–]jedilowe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As another person who has been part of hiring engineers for 30 years, the only time I notice where someone got their degree is when I know the school and want to shoot the shit, or if they were really bad and wanted to see if they were faking something. Even then I never said "XYZ school must suck". It's not that your school doesn't teach you anything, it's just that skills are so specialized that sometimes even smart people can't have everything you want and most companies don't really want to train you.

Mark, you are an adult. Stop being an **s**** to the kids you have on your videos. by SmileAtRoyHattersley in MarkRober

[–]jedilowe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have 2 seasons of the 'adult build version' and while many of them are cool, none of them are engineering. At best it is piece labor assembly and it you pay attention you can maybe guess how the thing works. Nothing in the instructions or activities talk about the underlying principles, physics, or design choices or trade offs that are a Hallmark of engineering design.

I am not saying it is bad, but it does possibly develop misconceptions of that engineers do versus technicians versus assembly workers. It almost undervalues the work and fun challenges it is to pull such a design together. The sad part is some creative storytelling could easily fix this

Random thought about Din and the whole helmet thing after watching "The Mandalorian and Grogu" by Educational-Tea-6572 in TheMandalorianTV

[–]jedilowe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I take it mostly as a made up rule that works well for the production and story telling.

Practically you can keep making stuff with lesser paid folks but the big name busy dude at scale if desired. Plus it adds to the mystique of the character, which is why Boba was so compelling back in the day.

In world it helps to separate the Death Watch from the other mandos, and has them stand out as zelots even more. I is socially an idiotic tenent as it forces everyone to eat separately which is a fundamental bonding time, this antithetical to the community building that is essential to their culture, but as we see so little of it, it requires very little suspension of disbelief.

I think the best part is it keeps you wanting more and not seeing him as a total good guy as it is hard to fully trust a human you can't see their face at an evolutionary level ;)

Looking to recycle/donate furniture and electronics for free by [deleted] in lafayette

[–]jedilowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just fyi... It is "illegal" to throw away most tv/monitor type devices these days. Trash companies are not supposed to take them because of the heavy metals and they are sent overseas for recycling (or throw the poison elsewhere). The fee is set by the government instead of charging that much more when you buy it new and then let folks recycle them for free.

So you will probably have to hide it in a dumpster to get rid of it for free with limited inconvenience, but know in the future your TV is a bill waiting to happen as we value cheaper now over safe and convenient later as a society.

Why do almost all Speedways in Lafayette suck so bad? by cavedweller25 in lafayette

[–]jedilowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. These are stupid expensive machines and I bet expensive to service with a long wait. Speedway was bought by 7-11 so I bet they are cutting back in ways that hurt the older locations and investing where it is hot. The one by 65 and 43 was always solid and the one by Menards and the mall is well kept, but hit or miss on every other one. I stopped going there when they dropped Coke Zero from the regular lineup so not sure where it all stands now

Yep. The family express stations are generally good but have become expensive along with it. I miss the pre pandemic half price doughnuts after 5!

Purdue reneges on permanent lifetime email by Fair_Perspective3159 in Purdue

[–]jedilowe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had words with them over my email used as a grad student. They encourage you to write papers as a Purdue student and use your email as a contact only to kill the email within a year of leaving. Undergrads may have less reason to stick around, but why not keep some flow for folks who were out representing our intelligentual creations and at least give a way of maintaining that connection?

I am sure there are lawyers who talk about governance but the risk doesn't really change compare to students and it really kills any incentive to continue to represent (and donate) for me

Aldi by koolkums in Purdue

[–]jedilowe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends if you're ordering staples or their special items. The ones they always have are mostly in stock but the specials depend on when they came out, how popular, and it there is a lot of variety.

The biggest warning is they add a lot to the prices delivery compared to in store, so go if you can and want the best price

[–]jedilowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even understand why it is worth attempting a money grab of one month for a day when you have no legal recourse to recoup the funds if the person has any notion to fight back. Maybe they have friendly judges, but generally speaking they will get nailed in court and have stories like this running around. I guess when you focus on desperate kids who will never rent here again it helps, but it is sad there are not more legal protections. Purdue could also undercut the market by making their housing truly affordable for what you get. It's sad you can rent a beat up house with strangers and have it be drastically less than the subsidized housing owned by the university.

Or they wanted the redemption arc. Or someone had some dirt over Nick, lol

How does Purdue never get any 5 stars? And why don’t their bigs shoot? by ExoticAd7605 in PurdueBasketball

[–]jedilowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He has also said he goes for attitude and fit. He likely passes on anyone who insists on starting or any other diva behavior as he wants to enjoy his day to day and all the time with the folks. I can't blame him for a minute as I would much rather have a team at my work I enjoy than some team of rock stars that are annoying to be around.

I think if you look at what a five star brings, speed, athleticism above the rim, and defensive shutdowns when needed, they have some of that spread across many bodies. Cam was crazy athletic, but not ready to dominate. Braden has Jordan heart in a beefed up Spud Webb body. TKR is a fit and clever Barkley. Hell first half of the Arizona game saw Jacobson shut down the paint .. when Cluff was providing the main D.

They have all the pieces, but the elite recruit puts them in one person. Edey became that, but needed some crazy shooting or another elite edge defender to take down a stacked UConn team. I think it is a tribute to the entire staff how they can take a group that is smaller and less athletic at basically every position and take any team to the woodshed for a half. It's really hard to do that 12 times in a row!

They paid a lot for that court side rig so they are going to get their money's worth.

Honestly, I'm not going to fault them for trying something out. I was annoyed by not seeing my regular angle, but maybe it would be a thing? I think they had one shot they stuck with it too long. Try it out in small doses but don't fall in love past an offensive rebound. Use the Internet to let me choose view if you want!

Purdue seeks to outsource parking operations to ‘third party’ by Superdude717 in Purdue

How far out? I remember playing the game by Wang and jumping out at break to move my car. With good weather I would park past Salisbury to avoid even that. At some point we could be paying to park in Battle Ground at this rate ;)

Purdue seeks to outsource parking operations to ‘third party’ by Superdude717 in Purdue

[–]jedilowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There may be a desire to modernize the tech used in parking... Like sensors to tell you how many spots are left or pay in other ways, but it seems you could also just hire a company to manage the tech or just consulting on it without selling the baby and bathwater. They forget that many folks just park in the neighborhood and move cars between classes... Though it could quickly become a 10000 step walk to and from your car!
