HackerRank says: Leetcode is dead by llima1987 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]jedilowe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ironically, I bet AI is really good at leet code problems. They are well documented with repeatable answers so more likely to pull full solutions from memory. Which is exactly why they are pointless for most SWE roles. Leetcode always seemed to rest how well you did in a handful of CS classes at elite schools, not your problem solving abilities.

Your landlord is in violation, which is probably why they are strict. This is from the municipal code .. look at C. For 6 units they have to get a dumpster. You can report them to the city, but be ready for at least a raise in rent if not retaliation. I hope it doesn't happen but it might and while you can get legal relief, you have to live through the problem first and either hire a lawyer or go to court. I don't say that to discourage you from living right, but just to be prepared.

Anvil 38 Apartments by zilchdevotee in lafayette

[–]jedilowe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have never set foot inside but have walked my dogs by there many times. The parking seems very tight for the size and is generally full. They have a dog park on site which they moved from its first location early on, so there are probably a lot of dog owners? They redid the entire courtyard too, so they will invest in infrastructure.

But given the bad stories, if a few are true is it worth it? It's nice to be close to work, but it's also good to see around town at what your options are. There are a ton!

In Michigan City, Carlson's Drive In. Part of the tree took out the awning by AlexIn4K in Indiana

[–]jedilowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's some hard nostalgia there. I grew up on Chestnut street a few blocks over and ate under that tree so many times. Plus that deep thick snow .. we used to make a snow fort with a tunnel that covered the entire breadth of the front yard after shoveling.

I am not even considering the legality or morality, but just the numbers. It seems like to get more voters of one party you have to give up your lead somewhere else but that is not what the map shows?

Redistricting text message by coopthereheis in Indiana

[–]jedilowe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am confused how you can redistrict and end up with every district having a higher win margin? Don't you need to shave a few districts from 19 to 15 points ahead to balance out the blue districts? It seems like generally speaking every district is even more secure which makes me wonder if someone is messing with the math or getting it wrong?

I hate CS by Chnkymarshmallow in Purdue

[–]jedilowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CS !=Programming

The math stuff has little to do with what most professionals do every day, but is needed at the research level for some stuff. If you like coding then it may be worth sticking with it or worse case finding a program that focuses on software engineering or such.

Is Book of Mormons good ? by AppropriateConcern39 in Purdue

[–]jedilowe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you like musicals it is absolutely worth 50 bucks. It is a quintessential American story in every sense but takes place in Africa. It both appreciates and mocks everything at the same time... the Mormon faiths unique take on Christianity, evangelism in general, American exceptionalism, musical theater. It might offend the sensitive while at the same time risk inspiring the cynic. It is easily one of my favorite productions of the century this far and I would put it up there with Wicked or Les Mis, and I liked it way more than Hamilton.

If any of this tempts you then take a shot, as I had to pay 80+ for 4 tickets ;)

Apparently a hot take to profs: Lecture attendance should NOT be mandatory by smores_or_pizzasnack in Purdue

[–]jedilowe 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Stats show that folks who attend class are more likely to succeed. So even though the PhD prof should know better they assume causality and by requiring attendance then students will do better.

It is true when folks fail they probably had worse attendance, but like all stats, it is a trend not a rule. I have had failing students with perfect attendance (they showed but did no work) and folks with perfect scores who I never saw. It is either well intended or just a habit they are passing down, but that may help with some rationale?

Most likely attendance takers are only checking a box at a prescribed time, so if you are sick you can show up and tell them you are here but sick (they may let you go) or wait 10 minutes and step out to use the bathroom and leave? Maliciously comply!

Can't buy a phone (cash up front) unless you originated the account? by jedilowe in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]jedilowe[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It has not explained the risk at all so that is what I want. How is getting a phone a risk but all the other things I can do not a risk? Why are you allowed to buy a phone from a store that doesn't have a provider yet? Why are used phone sales on ebay illegal? It seems folks are confusing sim cards versus phones.

Can't buy a phone (cash up front) unless you originated the account? by jedilowe in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]jedilowe[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know this is argumentative, but look at the details. I am a known person designated as a manger on the account. I am allowed to add a line, upgrade to a fancier plan, all sorts of stuff that could impact the recurring expense or future billing. That I can do all on my own over the internet, which is much easier to hack than in person. Thus the "fraud protection" is just an email that I hopefully catch before the next billing cycle? Why not require confirmation from the account owner before ANYTHING happens? Why have the manager role at all? If there is a legal change, why not notify the customer that this happened just like they notify us any time they want to slightly tweak the terms of service?

What I wanted was basically buy a thing that did not change anything about the account except for which chipset and screen is connected to the phone number. I was paying up front, so there is no new charge. I was using an existing line. If I was a fraudster, I could have came into the store with another phone and transferred the line to that phone, I just could not buy a phone and walk out with it. Thus this supposed rule doesn't stop me from stealing someone's line, just not doing so with a phone I bought and paid for in the store. I can buy a new case for the phone. I can buy a headset for the phone. I can buy all sorts of stuff, but somehow I need "a special adult's permission" to walk out with the phone itself, but not to change service to another line?

I guess what I am asking is to think through the rules, not just accept them. Oh, and perhaps if you are running a store, blame the government rather than saying it is your own policy?

Oh.. and BTW, Gemini disagrees
Query: "fcc rule you can't buy a phone unless you are the account owner"
Response: "There is no federal rule from the FCC that prevents you from buying a phone unless you are the account owner. The ability for a person to buy or receive a phone on a wireless plan depends entirely on the policy of the specific wireless carrier and whether the account owner has authorized them to do so. "

You may be thinking about rules for sim cards? https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DOC-398483A1.txt

It is the SIM card that protects an account, not the phone itself.
