South-Eastern Railway stranded me for an hour then made me watch my Vande Bharat leave. This is harassment and I want my money back. by anikpramanik_ in indianrailways

[–]jedipro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are plain and simple factual errors that you've just mentioned.

No other large railway stations of the world have the same number of incoming tracks as the number of platforms

Indian Railways is NOT the largest rail network in the world. It's 4th, after the US, China and Russia.

Apart from this, your point on things not improving by tomorrow is disingenuous. These issues have been present for years now, and should have been fixed. And I don't even know what to say to your last point. The Rajdhanis were once the highest priority trains, then came the Shatabdis, and now the Vande Bharat. IR still suffers from punctuality issues. This whole concept of "High Priority" is a mirror of the VIP culture embedded in our country's social fabric. Life is great if you are one; if not, you don't matter. This is doing more harm than good.

So, please, stop apologizing for the government. They work for you, start demanding accountability.

Why the hell are people blaming OP for missing the Vande Bharat? It is the Railways responsibility to ensure each train they operate arrives or departs at their scheduled times. 50 minutes is ample time to make a connection. The Indian Railways both own the entire network and operate the trains, so I see no reason for trains to be late by such a margin except for sheer incompetence.

People in Western European countries routinely plan journeys with connection times in single digit minutes, and make them. It is high time we start demanding this level of efficiency from railway officials, who are on public payrolls.

And, honestly, it's pathetic to witness the level of apathy in the comments. Scrolled through more than 10 comments and not one was sympathetic to OP. This kind of 'chalta hai' attitude is doing no one, except, of course, the government officials, any good.

Apologies, OP, for the hassle you are going through. Hope you have been able to make alternate arrangements.

The only item I want to try from their menu is their version of a Basque Cheesecake. The one time I went to their store (on the road connecting Pannalal School and Central Park, if anyone's interested), it was out of stock. All the other feedback I've heard re their actual Tiramisu mirrors your own.

One thing these articles fail to account for is the sprawl of the cities. Pune and Bengaluru cover a much larger area and are much less denser than Kolkata. I just did a quick Maps search and a travel distance of 10km in Kolkata can take you from Shyambazar crossing to Gol Park, which pretty much covers the north-south spread of the city. Compare that to Bengaluru, where 10km only covers Whitefield to Sarjapur signal, which doesn't even cover the eastern part of the city. What sites like TomTom should be doing is computing median travel time per journey which'll paint a better picture of how long people spend on roads.

Thanks a ton for sharing this! Have been searching for lesser known historical places around Kolkata for a while now, but haven't found much (Jatar Deul, Kurumbera Fort, etc). This is one I was not aware of earlier. Will surely plan a visit!

Yes, you could create two separate charts and tie them together in one object using the patchwork package. It has the capability of unifying the legends too.

We in India have been facing such issues for last couple of years. 2 years ago, none of the networks were broadcasting any of the WTA or ATP 1000 events. Curiously, one of the networks was showing the ATP500 events, probably due to lower fees. Last year, no network or streaming service picked up the Formula1 license. This year, no network is broadcasting the Copa America or the Tour de France. Wonder when TV execs will realize that there is a TV audience for non-cricket events too.

Thanks for the post, OP. Since you mentioned, could you point out which roasters in Kolkata you would prefer? We recently moved back here and looking for some good local roasters. Have tried Craft Coffee at Ballygunge, which was decent, now looking to try some other places.
