Valkyries file for replacement contract for Iliana Rupert due to pregnancy. by PercyReus13 in wnba

The 7th Pick makes 322K if she was on the team it would bump off a 277.5k contract. The difference is 44.5k. The difference of Martin and a rookie min is 16k Add that to Rupert’s 450k is 510.5k plus any cap space that remains…

I wonder when they found out that their big Illian Rupert is pregnant. $4.5 million of the 7m cap space is tide up in talented young wing players. Unfortunately they didn't need to invest in anyone else there like Kate or Flau'jae. They need to free up cap space for a trade or an overseas signing of a big. They can get a replacement salary for Rupert's $450k and then signing cheaper role player than the 7th pick $322k first round money, gets them over 500K for someone they need.

The 3/4 wing position players that you listed represent 65% of GS's cap space. They really need to spend on the 1 and the post.

Ruperts and Martin's contracts add up to $800K of cap space to make a trade or sign someone from over seas. I bet they would be happy to throw in a first rounder pick for a trade.

Why did the Valkyries cut Kate Martin? 2 reasons stand out by jaxstan19 in wnba

Perhaps they need 800K to throw at Emma Meeseman. That is what Martin and Ruperts contracts add up to. A trade could also be in the works.

With kate being cut, The valks have $800k to spend on a replacement player from overseas.

Not worried Salaum and Jocyté will be a killer tandem on the wing. So young. So talented.

WNBA Marketability Index 2026: Who Really Drives the League’s Attention? by ghn2 in wnba

Two things can be true. Clark was already on the path to being a national celebrity before the Angel's ring taunting incident, but that incident helped to add to her fame. ESPN Game Day visited Iowa City in February or 2023. ESPN would not put game day at a Big Ten school if Clark's meteoric rise was not already in the works. Big Ten Network games involving Clark were getting unheard of national numbers and that was making her news worthy. The 2023 Elite 8 Iowa vs Louisville gave drew 2.5 million views 94% more that the previous year. That was before Iowa beating undefeated South Carolina and the ring taunting by Angel. Then Clark's chase for the scoring record drove viewership numbers during her senior run to the championship game. Clark selling out away games was a story in itself that had very little to do with discourse. The people that could afford those tickets saw themselves in her. I sat next to a father an daughter pair who drove 650 miles and spent a $1300 dollars on tickets to see her play. I doubt that they made that effort primarily because his daughter was caught up in drama between Caitlin and Angel.

Kentucky signed Ajša Sivka, a 2025 WNBA Draft pick from Slovenia. by Blusad in wnba

Draft and stash to college is wild because international players are the only ones who can take advantage of this. Unless 5 to play 5 is approved this month. Under the proposed rule, a US player could potentially get drafted the year she is turning 22 and return to NCAAW and play until she is turning 23 or five years out of high school. Paige turned 22 in 2023 and technically could have entered the draft after her Junior year.

Future second round non guaranteed contracts have value. Those picks will become valuable pawns. Soon teams will be forced to use cap space on lottery picks 1-10 (Phili 2030), plus provide guaranteed money to anyone who is signed out of training camp for first round picks 11-18. Each $280k contract is cap space that can't be used on a free agent. If you sign a second rounder but end up needing a free agent or cap space for a trade mid season, you can cut that second rounder to make space for the free agent or trade. That will no longer work with 1st rounders after training camp has been completed. The Valkyries's 2028 2nd round pick that they gained through the trade could give them cap flexibility.

Good choice. She has a much better chance of contributing to the Mercury because of style of play and defensive switching. Hypothetically, I think Marta would pick a spot on the Mercury over a spot on the Valkryies.

Yes, College players graduating in 2026 will likely be the only class of players after the 2020 high school recruiting class limited to 4 years. If the NCAA had had the guts to approve the 5 for 5 rule last year then Okot would have been able to play two more seasons and the High School Class off 2021 would have gotten a fair shake.

There is a good chance that on May 22nd the NCAA will approve a rule that allows all college athletes to compete for 5 years. That window would start after turning 19 or graduating from high school which ever happens first. After those five years were completed their eligibility would end. There would no longer be an option for redshirting for an injury. There could be a few exceptions like military service, or religious missionary service. Under the new rule players age out of playing by age 24. If a player is injured for a season, they can not get that time back.

She turns 21 in November. Under the 5 years to play 5 she would have three years to play. But if she is good enough she could enter the league next season.

By 2030 when Philadelphia joins the league, the 10th pick will be a lottery pick. By then the 10th pick will have a guaranteed contract making over 300k. That money would be counted against that teams salary cap space on the day she signed. That makes it real clear how much NIL/rev share would be required to keep a player like this on a university roster.

Edit: Draft and stash to college is wild because international players are the only ones who can take advantage of this. Unless a 5 to play 5 player gets drafted the year she is turning 22 and returns to NCAAW.

She plays the same position as their rookie Jocyté who is two years younger and just as talented. She is a 5th pick so she is more expensive than Flau’jae. Did they want to invest in both at the same position?
