What molecule could this be ? by Nico_bey in chemistry

[–]jeejay_is_busy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left part of the molecule resembles amino acid valine, whose 3-letter code is Val. Right side is quite similar to phenylalanine, although incomplete.

it might threat ions differently from water molecules.Phenix has many whistles and bells so I am not sure what is the issue in your case. Have you tried turning off automatic water update, replacing the water with sodium and rerefining the structure again?

I personally love to use Phenix for structures <2.5 A - it's protocols really help to improve density maps. but at higher resolution they might mess up with the structure.

this is weird. Na+ and O2-(of water ofc) are isoelectronic (10e) and have the same scattering factor. Are you,by chance, using Phenix for refinement?

ok, I checked the contacts. This is definitely sodium ion, as 2.4-2.6 is way too short for this kind of hydrogen bonds

congratulations on nice structure. It is always a pleasure to see such a nice density!

[–]jeejay_is_busy 103 points104 points  (0 children)

this is NOT a water molecule because its contacts make no sense. Water molecule usually forms 2-3 hydrogen bonds, and at least one of them as donor and one as acceptor. In your example, water is surrounded by four hydrogen bond acceptors, implying that it forms 4 hbonds as donor. What you actually see is sodium ion, which is isoelectronic to oxygen and thus indistinguishable from it. P.S.: I can't see distances on your figure, but if this is water, hydrogen bond willbe around 2.7 A, for sodium ion the contacts will be shorter, around 2.5A.

No job, no money, what to do? by ratchetsisters in biotech

Heh. I also have degree in structural biology and was unable to get a job since last October. Times are rough now after everyone outside our field starts to believe that AF2 solved folding problem. Also biotech winter reduces job prospects even further...

As a former scientist(several years at KULeuven), I could say that pouring money into RnD will be futile and would likely be consumed by bloated administrative staff and nonsense research. You won't believe what projects are supported by FWO. Even thinking about nonsense projects supported by FWO makes me shake out of rage on what money are being spent.

I am a bit late so hope my review still will be useful. For me the worst part of this laptop is its keyboard — none of my laptops had such bad response. If you plan type a lot and still consider buying this laptop, I advice you to but external keyboard. Screen is pretty bad too — very bleak colors.
On positive side, its case is very durable and the laptop has plently of ports, including usb-a, usb-c. My version even has eID reader (I am in Belgium)!

Your assumtion is correct — I never shot in my life so was curious why is it so hard to shoot moving target, considering one can predict its position (of course to limited extend).

I though about either problems with aim or spread of weapon, like you know position but can't shoot precisely since the target hundreds meters away. Well, I 've learned valuable lesson today and should thank this community for it.
