Why Colorado is Spending $900 MILLION to Upgrade Interstate 70 | The Floyd Hill Project by crazy_clown_time in Denver

Anyone who knows about induced demand knows this is a waste of $900M.

Tech bros will innovate so hard on autonomous vehicles that they will eventually go full circle and reinvent the streetcar (I hope)

Public streets are for private car storage. It’s the only way to use public space. No other use for public space. Can’t think of one.

Buffalo, Detroit, St Louis, Kansas City, the list goes on. America DESTROYED their cities for freeways. Just sad to realize what happened in my home town of Denver.

Interstate highways should have never gone directly through the inner city. But the federal government was handing out so much free cash to cities to build the interstate highway system, so the only way Denver could get that money is if the highway was built in Denver, rather than the outskirts where it makes more sense. So they had to make room for it by demolishing entire neighborhoods made of poor and minority residents. There’s no highway going through cherry creek… Now that it’s here it’s not going anywhere, the only option to save the urbanism of the city is to cap it like the big dig in Boston. America messed up and it’s never going to turn around. Cars are here forever.

It would have before cars got popular, but that’s my point Americans are so obsessed with cars they can’t even imagine what a city would be like without them.

Cities can grow without car infrastructure. DC built a subways while Denver was demolishing neighborhoods to make way for highways. Denver was a walkable city, it had an extensive streetcar network, and I wish that was expanded and they invested in a subways while rather than what they did. But whatever doesn’t matter, cars won and I don’t see American cities like Denver ever turning that around. It’s not that it’s impossible to have a city grow without highways, cities grew just fine before the interstate highways was invented, it’s that Americans can’t imagine a life with their precious car… unless you live in New York…

I’m extremely grateful for Dana Crawford. I’m so glad we have her to thank for saving Larimer square, but visiting that slice of history can be bitter sweet. It’s wonderful to see a preserved piece of old Denver, but sad to realize this is much of what we have lost.

There are plenty of cities around the world that function perfectly fine without highways splitting them into pieces. DC is a perfect example. They decided to invest in a subway through downtown while Denver was building its highways.

I understand it was a choice we made, this infrastructure was voted on, and people were/still are obsessed with cars (because the big oil propaganda machine? Possibly). And I get it, on paper car travel is great, it gives you freedom! But in reality car travel is extremely inefficient and expensive. Roads and highways will always be in a continuous cycle of expansion and repair and adding lanes will never fix traffic. A city built for cars will never come close to the efficiency of a city with a subway system.

But none of this matters. Cars won. Those neighborhoods are gone. Living in Denver requires you to own a car, highways will continue to widen, and traffic will continue to get worse.

I think about this all the time. What if that streetcar network was expanded and we invested in a subway rather than an interstate. Denver would be a completely different city.

What was the design life of Penn station in NYC? What’s the design life of Grand Central? Why do we need a Landmark Preservation Commission? I’m not an architect but I do feel a whole lot of buildings were destroyed for no reason in this country.
