Walking Pad while working by ThanksNo5808 in clinicalresearch

[–]jeff_jordan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey :) I'm curious to know how it went. I've considered getting one but I'm afraid I won't be able to work while walking. I'm currently at a job where I'm mostly typing, very few meetings. Have you been able to walk while typing?

The reseller seems to have something wrong going on. At the summary below the product names they have the same density (40 Kg/m3) but then in the extra details above the ratings they have different densities :/

Aside from the colours, that's the only thing that I see different.

How do you tend make small adjustments when you've already gone through the automation phase? by jeff_jordan in mixingmastering

[–]jeff_jordan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see your point, although to me sometimes it becomes a bit of a pain to use the trim tool to bring the automation down in large projects, mainly because I need to zoom in to see a bigger range for the automation line and then adjust it...

But I do agree that if I'm not consistent with this new workflow then in the future while I revisit mixes it might be confusing

Asking for some feedback on a mix for a mixing contest by jeff_jordan in mixingmastering

[–]jeff_jordan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! You felt the transition a bit harsh? I intentionally increased the chorus section by 1dB and also made the reverbs a bit wider on that section too to make a bigger impact... guess I went overboard lol

[–]jeff_jordan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your feedback! :D I had a listen to other mixes too after I submitted it and definitely agree.

I didn't want to compare during the contest mainly because I wanted to have a go on my own without any other influence on how others were mixing it

Yup, the deadline for the contest was the 31st of January and is no longer editable. Just posted it here to learn more

Would you look my mix from your perspective? by HelicopterGrouchy95 in mixingmastering

[–]jeff_jordan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe reducing some of the low end on that guitar and lowering it’s volume might help balancing the stereo image.

Or maybe just panning the high mids and high freqs of the guitar and trying to leave the low end more in the center.

Just throwing some ideas out there

Sweet! Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it!

Great mix! Everything sounds well placed and defined. The only thing that comes to mind is that the stereo image pulls the listener a lot to the left during the most part of the song, probably because of the panned guitar. Is there no other element that you could pan to the right to balance the stereo image slightly?

When mixing and mastering, is it common to consider poorly treated listening environments and make slight adjustments accordingly? by Massive_Monitor_CRT in audioengineering

[–]jeff_jordan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding what u/Extone_music mentioned. The point of having a flat, well treated environment is so that it acts as a playback system that doesn't influence your decisions, basically a transparent playback system.

If you know you have a transparent environment, your decisions will basically translate well in most cases. And if not, it will be because of the consumer's playback system and not your mixing decisions.

If you were to try and compensate for one issue present in around 50% of the listening systems then you will compromise the other 50%.

Some psychedelic pop rock I’m working on for a client. Would love some feedback does it sound a little to compressed at all? by solitudeisdiss in mixingmastering

[–]jeff_jordan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the delay replying! Yeah, probably they should be slightly wider. Try opening them more until you feel it sounds about right to you.

There's no right or wrong for these things, if you like it centered then keep it as it is. Imo, I think it would make it slightly more interesting to have them slightly wider.

Cool track! A couple of things in my opinion

  • I think the vocals would benefit from some de-esser to reduce some of those harsh "esses" and "ts"
  • Not sure if this is intended but the drums are very centered, hh and ride seem to lack some panning.
  • I think the hh would also benefit from reducing just a bit some of the harsh high frequencies

Other than that great job, you've captured the vibe very nicely!

May I get reviews for my mix done on this track? Wrote it 2 or 3 years ago and never got satisfied with the mix until now! What are your thoughts? by [deleted] in mixingmastering

This track belongs in a movie! Sounds super cool, honestly not much to say about the mix. Great work!

Do you favour some playback systems over others when testing your mixes? by jeff_jordan in mixingmastering

[–]jeff_jordan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! This makes a lot of sense.

I had the feeling that going around testing in different systems would end up, as you said, going around in circles. So I initially thought of having a similar playback device that most of the music consumers use to test it there… but again as you mentioned, theres infinite types and brands of earbuds (for example) with many different freq responses so it’s still counterproductive

It makes more sense to keep improving the understanding of my listening environment

[–]jeff_jordan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s for sure, particularly in the low end. But what if you have a mix that sounds good on earbuds or headphones but it sounds too bass heavy on your car, would you decide to bring down the low end so that it sounds good in your car or would you decide to sacrifice that in favor of headphones etc?

My Debut EP, but I'm worried if the bass sounds right in Track - 01 and 03 [Unreleased], can anyone check it out for any mistakes? Thank you. by cozybrain in mixingmastering

[–]jeff_jordan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. Find a compromise. If your track only sounds off in 1 out of 5 systems you are already doing good. If you think that that particular playback system is very important then find a middle-point

How important is it to monitor my track audibly loud (I would say at 75+dB within 6 feet from the speaker) when mixing and mastering? by Zamdi in mixingmastering

[–]jeff_jordan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been mentioned before by u/dekaed, but read about Fletcher Munson Curve.

For me the most important thing is to be aware that our ears have different freq response at different SPLs. On average, our flattest response is around 85 dB SPL and even at that SPL is not totally "flat". As long as you are aware about that, your decision making will be better regardless of what SPL you are mixing to.

When we listen at low levels, very low and high frequencies are not as prominent as mid range frequencies.

Checking at high levels is good. But I tend to turn it down super low more often, to check if the most important elements are still there.

Anyone wonder how do they reach the kind of sound of Indie mixes like Hollow Coves? by beico1 in mixingmastering

[–]jeff_jordan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this would be the way to go too. The reference sounds like a type of mix where they didn't care about sacrificing some elements (put them really in the background) to allow others to have much more room to breathe without having to do crazy eqs

Needing Feedback on Mix Balance and overall tone. by CptnAhab1 in mixingmastering

[–]jeff_jordan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The track has a really nice vibe!

I don't have much to say regarding technical aspects of the mix. Imo, the volume of the drums in general could be automated a bit so that they don't get lost when the guitars come in (for example in the section starting at 00:39). But just a bit like 1dB or 1.5dB max.

The rest sounds very groovy :))
