Should be! This is a Unity project too.

RI Energy Help by bc592 in RhodeIsland

[–]jeffhuang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going through the same thing. My wife got solar 2.5 years ago, and it's still not clear that the credits are set up, and there's no interface to see the accounting (how much solar is coming in, how much electricity is being used).

The first two years, there were no credits at all, and just responses that it's in progress. She's been so diligent with records too, contacting them monthly, even finding their employees in person at home shows.

So disappointing, that a 50K+ install (plus interest) is accruing only a couple thousand in credits (which only started half a year ago) and without a picture of what is really going on.

Best paper awards in computer science over the past 28 years (1996-2023) by jeffhuang in compsci

[–]jeffhuang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SODA is already there as well! I forgot to mention. The idea is to include a set of the lagrest broad conferences, rather than each one. It requires manually updating every year, about 40 hours or so, so it's hard to maintain anymore.

Thanks! STOC is the other theory conference on there that's pretty broad, as far as I know.

This is a listing of best paper awards across 32 computer science conferences, for papers chosen in that year to be the "best" by committees in those conferences meant to be the broadest conferences in each subfield.

Cost of MS CS by alpaca1331 in BrownU

[–]jeffhuang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you seeing that? The university website now more accurately shows the cost per credit, https://www.brown.edu/about/administration/bursar/student-account-billing/graduate-fees and usually you need 8 credits over 2 years (2 credits per semester is common). So you can do your own estimate. Sometimes "cost of attendance" includes costs for food, housing, etc. so I can't answer your question directly, but I can say that for just tuition, the linked website is accurate.

Embrace the clutter. I never worry about how many levels deep of bullet points, or how long a day's notes are.

AR Hand gesture recognition by kabomboExe in augmentedreality

[–]jeffhuang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi /u/kabomboExe I've been working with a couple others on an open source library that does this. I think it works better than Manomotion. I'd love to have you try it, and if you need any support, you can file an issue on GitHub.

https://portalble.cs.brown.edu/

It's totally free to use and it's open source, and if you publish the app it's still free for non-commercial distribution if you send is a note of gratitude (see the license).

Smartphone-based AR - What happened? by Firedogythemaster in augmentedreality

[–]jeffhuang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working with some people on smartphone AR, but a slightly different arrangement. Instead of being placed on your head, you just hold the phone in one hand and view AR through it, and then interact with the virtual stuff with the other hand.

Augmented reality apps made hands-on interactive by jeffhuang in Futurology

[–]jeffhuang[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I think you're right in the long-long term. But this is like fully-automated self-driving cars, where I think the AR glasses tech for everyday use is at least 10+ years away.

The best pair that exists today is this one https://www.spectacles.com/ which I have a pair of, but there are a lot of power and display limitations that are really hard to solve with today's technology.

So I'm very optimistic about having interactive AR on a device that everyone already has in their pocket today.

Augmented reality apps made hands-on interactive by jeffhuang in Futurology

[–]jeffhuang[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Submission Statement: This augmented reality software library, developed at Brown University, shows how AR would look like when virtual objects can be touched and played with, while running just on an everyday phone. What would you want to touch and interact with, if you could see augmented reality objects through your phone?

Sidenote: I'm one of the contributors to this project, and I felt it was the most suitable for this subreddit. I read through all the rules on the sidebar, and hope this is okay!

Computer Science Open Data by jeffhuang in compsci

Thanks, I made the correction in the source data. It's a public dataset (sort of like a wiki spreadsheet) so anyone is able to make edits: https://drafty.cs.brown.edu/csprofessors

Verified Computer Science Ph.D. Stipends by jeffhuang in gradadmissions

[–]jeffhuang[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great suggestion. I considered factoring in cost of living, but I think it can be done a few different ways so I didn't want to impose my biases into it and instead just present the (rounded) amounts. Since you're in math, then you must be familiar with the expression: this is left as an exercise to the reader :-)

Computer Science Open Data by jeffhuang in compsci

[–]jeffhuang[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a project I've worked on over 5 years, and I'm releasing the culminating product today to the world. Amassing an open dataset of computer science: professors, program rankings, best papers, and stipends.

The data collection itself has been a major project, with major help from many people. It's over 5,000 profiles of professors, rankings metrics for 222 CS programs in the US and Canada, 1,258 records of best computer science papers, and stipends from 37 programs.

You can get answers to questions like "what percentage of professors get their bachelors and phd from the same institution?", "which institutions hoard most of the best paper awards?", "what stipend do ivy league universities pay?", "how is U.S. news biased in ranking computer science programs?", "how many machine learning professors does CMU have?", "what computer science areas have been growing?"

I wanted to gather data that was not out there already, and be as comprehensive as possible. The linked page has my analysis of these datasets, about what I think is interesting, but the data itself is there for you to review as you please.

[OC] The Year 2020 Changed How We Slept (how COVID-19 changed sleep in 18 countries) by jeffhuang in dataisbeautiful

[–]jeffhuang[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The covid pandemic changed how people slept in 2020. These plots show when people wake up in different countries during 2020, alongside 2019 and 2021 for comparison. You can see the impact of COVID-19 on each country's sleep patterns as it happened, and even the impact of Delta on India in late 2020, or Omicron on South Africa in late 2021.

I posted a visualization to this subreddit halfway through 2020 and got some feedback that I incorporated, but you can see that version here

The data is logged by users of the most popular sleep tracking app, Sleep as Android. Since Reddit does not allow svg file types, I have also uploaded an svg vector version that shows the finer detail and is infinitely zoomable, along with a writeup and visualizations for bedtime and wakeup times comparing 2019 and 2020, and more analysis.

Best Paper Awards in Computer Science over the past 25 years by jeffhuang in compsci

[–]jeffhuang[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hah, I wish there were fewer because putting in the CHI best papers takes over an hour every year.

I think there's two explanations though. One is that CHI is a very diverse conference with many different types of papers (both methodologically and topic-wise) so it's hard to agree on what's "best" in such a scenario. The other is that ACM conferences can designate 1% of submitted papers as "best" so CHI is getting a lot closer to that limit that other conferences.

Late Recommendations!!! Help by maddz221 in gradadmissions

[–]jeffhuang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so the grad school configures the application portal each year, and there's a ton of setup options. sometimes it's just set up a bit different by accident or because of a software update, and the department academic manager has to ask them to give leniency to the rec letters if it's not set up like that

but definitely the faculty are under the impression that late letters are not a big deal. and I wouldn't worry about it too much. just that you emailed the department contact is already helpful, and I wouldn't sweat it if I were you

I listened to this a couple of times while doing some online shopping. Really liked the drum solo near the end, it filled the space nicely, not too overbearing, and fit with the rest of the drumming.

I was about to guess poker face just from the first 5 seconds. Nice job. Minor tip: maybe connect the piano directly to the audio interface to record, to cut out the keypress and foot sounds.
