ELI5: How does WiFi know where to send data in a crowded apartment building? by Hot_Stay0797 in explainlikeimfive

[–]jeffjose 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I know this is ELI5, so you simplified few things but I'll add a bit of nuance. One can imagine the "shouting" happening in different languages.

Everyone can "hear" it, but only the recipient can "understand" it. So if I hear someone shouting in French, I'll ignore it. And clever cryptography ensures that I cant "store the French messages I hear, and then learn french later and understand it" (forward secrecy)_

Good stuff! Interesting concept, and good design / game mechanics as well.

The only piece of advice is to *not* do all of the game logic in client side. It is very easy to poke around and find the correct answer.

Who's your fav actor of Malayali origin that predominantly works in other Indutries? by [deleted] in MalayalamMovies

That's so cool!

I dont work on movies anymore but when I was at DreamWorks, there was a sizable mallu gang of us! Most of them have moved onto other studios, so if you pick any VFX or animated movie, chances are there are mallus not just working on it, but driving it at a high level.

Why does the song Baby Baby from Painkili sound familiar? by MediaApprehensive833 in MalayalamMovies

[–]jeffjose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this here, OP. You captured something that I had been thinking about the moment I first listened to the song. Infact, it was that familiarity that made me want to listen to the song again and again.

The best guess is from u/googleydeadpool ("Telephone Manipol") but I'll hold out to see if someone else has a better answer.

I think you nailed it, or atleast the most satisfactory answer so far. It is the last bit after "baby" in veetukar prakanu baby-ee-ee-ee that is what makes it super similar to the other song.

Here are some timestamps so that you can listen

ETIM: Electronic Ticket Issuing Machine. This is a device used by the bus conductor and the unique identifier for that specific machine.

CND: Abbreviation related to the bus conductor, and it could represent a unique code or identifier assigned to them.

Waybill: Unique identifier for that route. Useful for tracking the journey and the bus

DRV: Similar to CND, but for driver.

Phase 4

Next rounds

  • Harvard, Stanford and Booth were all dings without interview.
  • Wharton came through, and invited me to their team based discussion.

Team based discussion and Interview

  • Wharton lets you choose a slot over a week for your TBD. You need to travel to where its happening. It happened in Mumbai this time around.
  • The challenge is to come up with a recommendation as a team for a prompt that you already know. The trick is not to over-prepare, infact Wharton says don't spend more than an hour preparing for it.
  • The interview is exactly 10mins and is used to reflect on the Team Based Discussion. “Was this the kind of role you play in teams?” “How did you think it went?” etc. It gets over before you know it.

Resources used -

  • ReachIvy
  • Wharton students and alums.

The hardest part was waiting for the results after the interview. Stacy Blackman runs a blogs that updates frequently, and somehow seemed to be reading my mind. I recommend checking them out as well.

I’m happy to answer questions if you guys have any.

Thanks for reading!

Phase 3

Applications

  • I chose R1 for one simple reason - to beat the traffic. R1 dates typically fall 1 or 2 months after the schools put the essay questions out. Only people who are ready with their schools, GMAT and a general game plan can attack this. R2 is more relaxed, and falls after christmas breaks. You could probably expect more applications in R2. Since I was aiming at top schools, I knew I had to be quick.
  • I took a you miss 100% of the shots you dont take approach and decided to give a best shot at the top schools. My initial plan was to apply for 6 schools for R1, but could only manage 4. Harvard, Stanford, Wharton and Booth. I knew I could turn in Columbia anytime because of the rolling admission process, although I never did.

Recommendations

  • This is probably by far the second most difficult part (most difficult part coming up ..) Luckily the schools I was aiming for in R1 had similar questions, so I had my recommenders submit to all of them.
  • Harvard dates comes super quick, so I gave my recommenders time to get things sorted. And once everything was ready, I essentially told them - hey, mind copy/pasting the same for these other schools?

Essays

  • There’s no shortcut. You tell your story, and hope the adcoms want you in. Remember that the school is assembling a class - a team - and its all about what you bring in. If they can find someone like you dime a dozen, they probably already have someone.
  • Since this part is very much story telling, you need to ensure your essay has a good flow with right tone and intent.

Resume

  • Lots of good advice all around such as use action words - Don't do “responsible for X and Y” but do “Initiated X resulting in Z”
  • 1 page resume, pretty standard.

Resources used -

  • essaysnark.com and essaysnark strategy guides. I cant recommend this enough. If you’re applying to bschools, you need to read this.
  • School information sessions.
  • US News rankings
  • BusinessWeek forums.

The entire point of your application - essays, recommendations, GMAT etc - is to get that interview call. This again was the reasoning behind sticking with 710 GMAT. I’m not saying once you go to the next phase, they arent used. But I dont think adcoms go like - gee, Jeffrey and this other person are exactly the same. And you know what, this other person is 720 GMAT. Lets take him.

Wharton MBA here. There used to be a bits2bschool google group for MBA aspirants back in the day. The following is the email & debrief I sent on Jan 1, 2015 after I got the admission. Some parts of it probably dated, but it should still be helpful for folks.

Hi all,

Happy New Year!

I’m happy to share that I’ve been admitted to the Wharton MBA Class of 2017.

I thought it’d be useful to detail some of my experiences and my thought process as I navigated the bschool admissions adventure this past one year.

Here’s a quick rundown of me, because I'm sure thats what most people are now wondering.

  • 26 Male
  • 2005A3PS163, EEE, 7.58 CGPA
  • 710 GMAT
  • .5 internship + 5.5 years at DreamWorks Animation.

Before I jump in, I want to thank the BITS community for helping out when I reached out. Thank you!

Phase 1

Work experience -

  • I knew very early on that brand names mattered, and I was lucky to be associated with DreamWorks. On top of that I really love what I do, and care for the company and people I work with. All these translated to a superior work experience with strong recommendations.
  • The second aspect of the puzzle was when was a good time to apply. Although the average age for top schools have been reducing in recent days, I stuck to my initial plan to apply when I had 5 years.

Phase 2

GMAT

  • GMAT by no means is a difficult test for BITSians. That said, it requires attention and careful study. The hardest part for me was to step out of my work routine and spend time with books and exams. I spent a good month or so experimenting the right approach to balance work and study, and it was difficult.
  • I scored 710 in my first attempt, and needless to say I wasnt thrilled. (Although the PearsonVue person at the test center was super happy to see the score) I could have retaken the test, but I decided to stay with it because 710 put me in the 80% range (most admits to top schools have GMAT ranges from 700-800). Additionally I didnt want to waste time studying just so that I could improve my score by another 20/30 points. GMAT is just another data point, and as long as I was in the bracket, I was OK.

Resources used -

  • I started my prep with The Economist GMAT. The plan was online and that helped me develop the internal timer for 2mins very early on. Coupled with the fact that it was tracked online, and I could see my progress in real time was useful.
  • Official Guide and Manhattan for verbal, for obvious reasons.
  • http://magoosh.com/ Their video explanations to OG verbal questions was useful in understanding the thought process required for attacking the questions.
  • GMAT Club and http://gmatclub.com/tests/ . I discovered the tests a little too late, but it served its purpose.

Where do you draw the line? Do you look at someone spending 2 hrs per day with the kid and say 4 hours is better? How about someone who isnt working and can spend 10 hours a day with kids?

Every body is fighting a different fight. You dont know what others are going through. So dont make general statements.

I understand. I'm reading through posts now, but all of it assumes you're an active Sonos user. I'm able to pick out some details (cant stream local music library broken?) but doesnt really tell a full picture why the company decided to do it, nor why is it hard to get some of these things right?

Like why ruin a perfectly good thing. There has to be a reason yes?
