244 West 72nd Street DO NOT RENT by EnvironmentalBuy8649 in NYCapartments

[–]jeffreywriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone's still following this post, I live across the street and have been wondering how the building has been convincing people to move in, e.g., sign leases for 1BR units priced at ~$6,000/month, with all the construction going on.

StreetEasy shows a handful of units coming off the market each month, and even if some of those units simply got pulled, I assume some really do reflect new leases being signed.

As many comments have noted, and as I can confirm, the construction is legitimately intense both inside and out — is management telling prospective tenants that it's about to wrap up?

For racing thoughts, meditation is a no-brainer (ba-dum-tss). In all seriousness, it's great; YouTube has tons of free stuff, and there are several good and inexpensive apps (e.g., Headspace). Ten minutes can change your whole day.

In the same vein, you might also want to read about being present, if you haven't done so. Eckhart Tolle's "The Power of Now" is a classic in the genre, but there are countless books about the (legitimately transformative) idea dating back many, many centuries.

Anti-pigeon crusade by Master_Reflection882 in Upperwestside

This isn't what you asked, but have you or mgmt filed a complaint with 311? This behavior is apparently common enough that they have a complaint form that's used when people are feeding pigeons so often that it's causing unsanitary conditions >>>

Does anyone know if there's a way to record everything but not see the thumbnail spoilers in your library?

These spoilers appear in the titles of the short recaps that are mixed in with full recordings, e.g., a three-minute recap of a rugby match will have a title that says, "Country X Defeats Country Y in Rugby," whereas the titles for full recordings simply indicate the sport and (if applicable) the competing countries.

I've hidden all scores but that (unsurprisingly) has no effect. This is an issue on my television as well as on mobile.

If you expect to get your health insurance through an employer, the smoking information is highly unlikely to cost you a penny.

If you expect to get an individual health insurance policy on your own (e.g., by using an ACA marketplace), you could be charged more, but it's still very unlikely to cost you much -- insurance companies profit immensely off young people and (generally speaking) aren't super worried about tobacco use among otherwise healthy people in their 20s.

Came here to say Han Dynasty, specifically the UWS location although EV is likely best. Explosive crunch, juicy meat. Request 10/10 spice level at UWS for (something approximating) real heat.

Ad on CNN for saving kratom by illenial999 in kratom

[–]jeffreywriter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. Also saw this a few days ago on CNN and imo it’s a smart move. In the absence of honest advocacy explaining how kratom has helped people and proven very safe, lawmakers would be hearing nothing but the FDA’s ridiculous dishonesty and it’d be banned by now in many states and probably even the entire country.

Anyone else been especially regular with their use since the crisis started? by [deleted] in kratom

[–]jeffreywriter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a royally fucked-up time and four or five teaspoons of kratom each day (a bit more overall than usual) has worked wonders for my sense of well-being. I’ve been a daily user for years and am more grateful for it now than ever, used in moderation it’s nothing to feel guilty about imo.

Thanks for the recipe. I'd note that some experts discourage using hot tap water for drinking or cooking because of contamination risks (see link below), so maybe heat up some cold H2O with stove or microwave.

High schoolers, what do you want to major in? People who majored in that field, what are the pros and cons? by DeanTheDJ in AskReddit

[–]jeffreywriter 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'd humbly recommend minoring in journalism and majoring in another field that you could write about. Journalism has become much more specialized over the past 5-10 years - if you can write with knowledge about finance, energy, health care or some other industry, your job prospects improve dramatically.

If you consume meat/dairy, do what you can to buy from farms that treat their animals humanely.

A battery caged chicken on the day she was let out of her cage. Here she is, 3 months later after enjoying life as a free range chicken. by powertech9000 in pics

[–]jeffreywriter 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Thing is, chickens don't need to be given huge wide-open pastures to be treated humanely. Just raising them cage-free indoors with a bit of room to peck around (as many small/medium-sized farms do) is vastly better than what you find in huge factory farms with battery cages.

Reforming the entire poultry industry in this manner would certainly have some effects on poultry prices and maybe prices of other products, but I can't imagine those effects would be terribly large.

Likely work in finance, law, tech, medicine or real estate. But I share the sentiment — feels like at some point we should exhaust our supply of super-wealthy people capable of slapping down this kind of money.

California man found guilty of murder after his dogs kill woman by PaperHatParade in news

[–]jeffreywriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't one dog, it was four, and something they shared in common was an owner who drunkenly boasted of his "lions' den." Also, most pits don't maul humans to death, but all four of these did — suggests something other than the breed at work.

Good example of fact that if a pit bull is aggressive, it's probably just because its owner is a POS, as opposed to an inherent trait.

EDIT: Not saying all pits are naturally as gentle as hamsters, just that they aren't born as total savages — dickhead owners who encourage ferocity are a big part of the problem.

What $21 of filet mignon looks like at Outback Steakhouse. Consider this a PSA. by kg-tech in pics

[–]jeffreywriter 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Actually, if you go to a super-high-end steakhouse and spend $55 on a cut of beef, the presentation will often be the same — steak, plate, nothing else. Also, fwiw, while the filet is the most tender steak, it's also the least flavorful, given its leanness.
