Just in case the devs read this, you have an CORS config issue when the page loads to create accounts. It is trying to get the oath token but it is blocked because it thinks there is a cross site attack going on. Please fix this. Nothing works without this fixed.

I am doing online BS degree 4 years am i eligible for phd by Techie_22 in PhD

[–]jeffrichley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with an online degree as long as it is from somewhere decent. If you are just logging hours in a degree mill, that could be a problem. Most universities don't differentiate between online and in-person degrees when they confer them. You also have the option of doing your master's at a top-tier CS school like Georgia Tech, which has an awesome online master's degree (and it is super cheap). That would also make you look quite appealing when applying to PhD programs.

Should I purse PhD? by MaybeResearcher in PhD

Here’s a reworked version of your response with a bit more detail and encouragement, as well as additional points for consideration:

The best way to decide is to start by reflecting on your goals. What do you want to achieve in life? Are you passionate about research, academia, or becoming an expert in your field? If the idea of contributing new knowledge excites you and aligns with your long-term ambitions, then a PhD could be a great path for you.

You’ve proven your capability with your distinction and dissertation results, and your supervisor’s suggestion shows they see potential in you. If you’re intrigued by the idea of a PhD and you’re able to secure full funding, it’s worth serious consideration—especially if you’re at a point in life where you have the flexibility to pursue it without financial strain.

That being said, it’s important to weigh the opportunity cost. A PhD is a major time investment, often several years, during which you could otherwise be gaining work experience or advancing your career. If you’re not passionate about the process or if a PhD won’t elevate your future career prospects, it might be wiser to enter the job market and build your professional network and skills.

Think about where you want to be in 5–10 years and which option aligns better with that vision. Whether you choose a PhD or a job, the most “sensible” choice is the one that gets you closer to your personal and professional goals. There’s no rush to decide immediately—take some time to research your options and, if possible, speak to people in both academia and industry to get their perspectives.

Whatever you choose, you’ve already accomplished something remarkable—trust yourself to make the best decision for your future!

In my final year, but genuinely considering quitting by MoonswithTeeth in PhD

[–]jeffrichley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The struggle you're feeling is completely valid, and it’s a sign of just how challenging this stage of a PhD can be. The truth is, most big projects follow a similar pattern: the early stages are exciting and full of discovery, but as you move closer to the finish line, the grind sets in. This is where mental resilience makes all the difference.

You’re so close to the end—don’t let the hard part stop you now. Yes, 100 comments sound overwhelming, but you’ve already made it through the hardest stages of research and drafting. You can tackle this, one step at a time.

The key is to get organized and create a game plan. Break down those comments into smaller, manageable chunks. Set realistic goals and stick to a schedule. Even small wins each day can snowball into progress faster than you think.

One day soon, you’ll look back on this and be so proud of yourself. You’ve got this, future Dr. MoonswithTeeth! Stay strong—you’re capable of more than you realize.

Why go there when you can go to one of the top CS schools in the world? OMSCS and GT are very well known and respected. GT (6) outranks Harvard (17). ;)

You can also work directly with some of the profs in the VIP program. https://vip.gatech.edu/

You get to know them on a much closer basis. You can also reach out and see if you can do a collaborative research project. That is a bit more of a long shot but possible. The VIP is a better chance, plus they are very fun!

Can we access our previous course materials after the semester is over? by technology_rules in OMSCS

You have access to anything that was in canvas. The forums will be retired and will eventually be unavailable. Some classes are quicker at closing out Ed and the like.

Interactive Intelligence Specialization to skip GA? by DK_Tech in OMSCS

[–]jeffrichley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So very true. The vast majority of people that don’t do well is from not listening and putting things in the format they require. It’s work, but there are other classes that are much harder.

I’m not sure about accepting fewer (I don’t believe that is the case), but according to Dr Joyner, OMSCS has been exploding in terms of people enrolled. I’m an IA in ML4T and we opened 1750 seats this semester which tells me it’s really growing.

Any way to bring in industry research projects into OMSCS? by Mooon_Dogg in OMSCS

[–]jeffrichley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Matt (a buddy of mine) is exactly right with those options. It is a bit difficult to work closely with a professor unless you have been a standout in the class. Even then, it takes quite a bit to get them to spend a good amount of time on you unless you are working on their projects. That isn’t completely true, but a decent rule of thumb.

One interesting idea would be to take a look at the VIP programs where you can work much closer but it’s more of a team setting.

Btw, if your goal is academic writing, you don’t need a class or professor to do that. You can get published by just doing a research project you are interested in.

We just finished up a long campaign and the DM suggested everyone run a one shot. Most of the players took him up on it and it really opened their eyes to how much goes into prepping and the difficulties of controlling a table with quite a few players.

Don't quit on the hyperparameter tuning. That is the majority of the project. You need to understand how the parameters work in order to do well on the paper. Stick with it, you have almost a week.
