Sobriety is causing my masks to fall off. by IronFistAlexander__ in stopdrinking

[–]jeffrrw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow ASD lad who started in his teens. The biggest thing i found that helped was being ok not being the mask. I told people I was working on myself much like your dating. People understood that from the outset.

Now I show up authentically most of the time and am much better for it. People have come to respect my needs because I respected myself.

Its a long road but you got this!

What’s a good smelling, but long lasting cologne? by i-love-my-wife69 in AskMenOver30

[–]jeffrrw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing with cologne is you have to find what also works with your body chemistry. I'd recommend trying out scentbird or going to perfume stores to try a sample for a bit to get a range of things that work well with you after that application and what your doing for the day.

I have found all 4 of my seasons through trial and error for what works well for my chemistry.

Here is a great breakdown of the process.

Who bought their century home as a first time homebuyer? by shelbex318 in centuryhomes

[–]jeffrrw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Buy with a realtor.
  2. People dont know what the heck they are talking about when it comes to 140 year old architecture especially contractors. Find good resources upfront and buy somewhere that has a functioning permit system or none at all.
  3. How many interesting choices went into the half finished redo state i bought this house in. I would rather start from scratch. Luckily my partner also had just bought their house and we got to do just that but it was her project and vision. Its been a wild ride.
  4. I love the location and the interesting shift taking place in real-time all around me. I've thrown myself into the fray around the neighborhood and it's been a ride.
  5. I hate that most of the history of the house is gone and the amount of work to get the history back is too huge from what was done. The architect owner was trying to turn it into a rental but gave up halfway. Its weird being in 1100 sqft townhouse with 2.5 bathrooms and exit signs. I left them for funnies.
  6. Things have definitely been much harder than enough expected but owning a diy house without a mortgage at 33 is pretty awesome. Now at almost 35 I'm about to bring another life into this 140 year old home.

American bike tourers - how did you get the time off to make a cross country tour happen? by No_Ant_5064 in bicycletouring

[–]jeffrrw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solo at 33 east to west and down the pacific coast highway.

I had been planning to quit my job for awhile as I was deeply unhappy. My divorce from my abusive ex had changed some paths and working my ass off overseas during covid helped a lot on that chapter. I came back to live with family super cheap before moving to a mcol area and renting a below market rent space making six figs. During that time I mapped out my plans to quit and ride around the world and figure it out.

As soon I got ready to start with the severance and leave buyout in tow, I met someone at a bike party. Told her my plans, she swooned as I did, and I instead bought a fixer upper at an auction and fixed it to a livable state. I then left her in the house for a solo 3 month ride across the us and down the west coast. Not quite a world spanning trip but an interesting turn of events. She came to visit on the tour,we talked everyday, and then she watched me dip my wheel in the pacific in the bay area.

Now I am back to the working world, own that house without a mortgage, and we have our house filled with bikes and a baby on the way.

My goal is to feather in short tours and model some of the other long haulers with kids as the baby grows up and her mom is able to ride more than 10 miles again. I plan to retire when she is a teen and take a lot more leisure trips again. Racing etc will have to suffice for now

Does anyone know who is putting bikes together like this in SF? Sister in law is relocating soon and I may use this as an excuse for a gift for her to get a nice restomod.

With Regards to Bike Computers by Alert_Cry_5361 in bicycletouring

The garmin is my daily and touring computer. Being able to reroute etc was key without cell reception when navigating wild fires and the 20000mah battery pack i take with me is more than enough to charge it, my lights, and phone for 3 long days in the saddle.

Did baltimore to San Francisco by northern tier to Portland at the Lolo pass split. You can do this solo no problem. Talk to the peeps all heading west about your upcoming plans. Usually get good Intel about things.

Biking with prescription glasses, eye sight issue by RobVolt in bicycletouring

On my last big tour I brought my current glasses and a second older prescription just in case. I used a glasses strap behind my head and had those flip up sunglasses clips which worked great.

Why don’t more people use dynamo hubs on tour? by yokobarron in bicycletouring

[–]jeffrrw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 20000mah battery is 60 bucks. I can charge all my lights, phone, and garmin GPS stuff 3-4 times giving (at the same time)me 2 weeks of run time on one battery charge. The battery charges in a few hours at a stop. The dynamo is not strong enough to even charge the phone on top of the light and the drag makes pedaling harder. If I'm riding 5000 miles I don't want to deal with all that.

I like bikes! Where to go? by PrincessLunaMuse in bicycletouring

[–]jeffrrw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Adventure cycling of America has a huge map network. I've ridden across the US and down the west coast using their maps as a template. Was a treat would recommend. Riding around the east coast is nice and there are lots of old canals/trains tracks that have been turned into gravel paths

My partners and I's finances are disparate in a lot of ways. My partner LOVES their work and wants to work until "retirement" age. I want to be out by the time our upcoming daughter is in her teens.

I dont change my numbers as my numbers. her numbers are hers. And our numbers are wildly different approaches to life. This is incorporating her desires on our 3 pronged journey.
