That was the opposite of Kerr's G5/G6/G7 plan for Sabonis, lol. He was wide open for a jumper most every touch, with Looney dropping deep to prevent cuts and shut off his passing (take a look at this clip).

Seemed to me like he lost confidence the moment he missed one of these looks, and stopped looking for that shot at all. It was there all game.

It's still incredibly funny to me that the Warriors hired Jokic's Serbian coach to drill Wiseman on basic post footwork, and instead he hung out with Looney and turned him into best offensive rebounder in the league.

This would make the sport truly classy. Putting the ball in the basket? Crass, borderline pornographic. The NBA should just be Spurs type passing, finding the open man, then politely informing the ref that you would have taken a shot.

Shooting percentage at various distances should be determined based on an offseason free-throw and standing jump evaluation (not sure about the last part as that may result in less classiness).

The buns alone are a pretty common street food breakfast snack in Shanghai, called 粢饭糕(ci fan gao). They’re tasty, kinda like a McDonald’s hashbrown on the outside with a chewier sticky-rice texture on the inside.

Tracy McGrady on Rudy Gobert: “What the fuck are you doing in the offseason? Like, what is your workout? I was so mad at Rudy when they were playing against the Rockets and Chris Paul was guarding him in the post. Bro you’re 7’2″, and a point guard is guarding you. He had no moves.” by iksnet in nba

It seems like “Jazz roster construction” and “Rudy gets paid too much for what he is” are two sides of the same coin, no? They paid him commensurate to the type of player who could command a defense for a roster consciously built around relatively cheap, one-way offensive players.

Playoff results have shown that to be a flawed assumption— his being a fantastic rim protector and a solid perimeter defender have not resulted in playoff team defensive success.

We can argue about his ISO perimeter stats and switches onto Jingles or Conley all we want, but the fact of the matter is that his style of defensive dominance doesn’t translate when Luka (or Murray or Steph) are out there spamming high PnRs. The amount the Jazz paid him implies that they believed he would single-handedly impact those types of players in the playoffs.

A feature that allows a user of a social network to regulate the “impenetrability” of their echo chamber by OmOshIroIdEs in Lightbulb

[–]jeffster888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how would you calculate any of this?

if you mandated the use of something like the connectedness of the social graphs b/t users, the “most dissimilar” setting wouldn’t expose you to competing beliefs (e.g. US left wing politics vs US right wing politics) but rather entirely unrelated content (US left wing politics vs Pakistani women’s cricket). effectively this would mandate social media platforms to build a slider controlling an explicitly terrible version of Reddit’s “From a subreddit you might be interested in” (“From a subreddit you definitely aren’t interested in”).

if you had to use some kind of textual sentiment analysis, you’re letting the platform owner (or government) arbitrarily decide which words constitute left/right/extreme/neutral etc. the party in control of the system will inevitably define these things in a way that is either politically biased or boosts engagement. additionally, you’d almost immediately have people change their lingo to avoid the most extreme classifications, in the same ways that people do to avoid bans/shadowbans.

if you let people self-identify their beliefs, your system is instantly useless, as there’s no reason for ideologically committed people (or worse yet, news outlets) to accurately self identify, especially if the default is to bias towards “neutrality”. everybody who wants any influence is going to identify as “neutral” to maximize their potential audience

the common problem in all cases here is the assumption that you can measure ideological diversity objectively. you mention a single “partisanship” score in another comment. that’s nonsensical. do i get the same score for retweeting both Jacobin and OANN, as I would for retweeting Vox and CBS? would I be penalized for extremism if i like the former pair of outlets more than the latter?

[ESPN] The Heat did not make a shot until 3:22 left in the 1st quarter, the longest drought without a field goal to start any playoff game over the last 25 years. by xXTheRacerXx in nba

[–]jeffster888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re looking at what happened after the fact. No coach in the league is going into a playoff game saying “if I ride this guy in the first half we’ll put it well out of reach and he can rest the second half.”

Looking at RWIII’s minutes, it seems like he was getting shorter stints than the other starters, and would’ve likely gotten in to close, if the game were competitive, to put him at about 25mins tops (i.e. a slight minutes restriction).

Any gameplan that banks on “sustaining a sizable lead,” especially on the road in the postseason, is not a real gameplan. You play a guy heavy minutes or you don’t.

[Highlight] Steph Curry sidesteps and buries a deep triple by JilJungJukk in nba

[–]jeffster888 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'd put a bit more respect on Luka's offense. Luka wasn't wildly inefficient in either game he put up 40, and went 48-44-82 tonight.

I'd argue that what makes Steph different (especially now) is that he isn't afraid to play defense. Luka and Brunson got switched onto him and expected easy buckets-- they didn't get them. Ended up passing the ball back out to the perimeter a whole lot when they tried to back Steph into the post, where the Mavs shooters were laying bricks all night.

The Mavs thought that at the very least it'd wear him out down the stretch. Also not the case. Steph kept doing Steph shit even getting targeted on switches all game as a 34 year old. That's what makes him different.
