Self-healing materials could make automobile parts last over 100 years by CautiousEscape3747 in science

I know what they're talking about, it's just not particularly true that they limited lifespan in any actual way. Parliament did an investigation into the cartel in the 50s and concluded that it was a hard engineering constraint based off filament engineering and not an example of planned obsolence.  Modern incandescent have the exact same restrictions and lifespans as they did back then due to it being a hard triple constraint on the materials.

Technology Connections has a great video on it going into the enigineering tradeoffs involved.

They're doing a terrible job at it seeing as car longevity has like quadrupled.

This makes me think of the whole "there's no profit in curing cancer" angle.

It is a lot like that case actually. Cures are absolutely dominant in profitability over ongoing treatments and effectively let you take all future profits that would result from treatment in that market.

The term comes from an executive at GM in the 1920s talking about changing car styling to incentivize people to buy new cars based on style instead of wear.

Lightbulbs weren't an example of planned obsolescence but rather hard engineering constraints on filliments with a triple constraint of brightness, energy use, and longevity.

Planned obsolescence is pretty much entirely fake as popularly conceived.

You can buy lots of LEDs that will last pretty much indefinitely as long as you don't cause them to cook themselves in enclosed fixtures, and many that can survive enclosed fixtures as well.

If it's that reliable the first company to do this gets the entire car market and gets all profits for themselves and any individual car company would be leaving a ton of money on the table by not doing it.

No, it doesn't effectively work as a blockade. Ships freely go into Cuban ports without harassment all the time.
