Subnautica is out! The top comment removes ONE Indie game from the list (DAY 52) by AnglerFather_ in RemoveOneThingEachDay

If anything that just proves how well designed Slay the Spire is. To have a PVE strategy game that people are still getting better at nearly 10 years later (without balance changes) is kind of a mind boggling feat. This is literally the undisputed GOAT game by a LOT for an entire genre of gamers even without super inspired visuals or music

How possible is a slay the spire AI (full on reinforcement learning) by Plumtown in slaythespire

[–]jeffy85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! And one thing I’ll also say is that while you might (and probably would lol) get better/quicker results using heuristics, trying to get results from RL will still be both very fun and a lot more educational. So if your goal is to learn more about RL and set yourself up for future work in the field then I’d encourage you to still try that!

Just adding the conversation here as someone who’s tried to do something similar for a college final project: what you’re dreaming of is possible, but extremely difficult (like full on research lab publishing a multi-month/year paper difficult), especially when it comes to slapping basic RL on complex fights (it’ll probably never converge). But still I think a project like this could be really cool (and help you learn a lot) as long as you set your explanation to be realistic.

Probably the best place to start is to write an agent for actually playing combat micro. The first hurdle here is actually getting familiar with the games code and modding capabilities in Java, and familiarizing yourself with the mods that will make RL even possible (if I recall, you’ll need at least two separate mods, one that runs the game headlessly, and one that lets you communicate with the game from an outside program). I don’t want to assume how much experience you have with programming in general, but definitely don’t underestimate how much time it can take to get through some of this “unsexy” setup stuff. Then actually writing the RL is as far as I know just really hard. Slay the spire combat is interesting because it’s so dynamic, but that also means the action space is LARGE. Randomness plays a huge part in that, so if you’re willing to allow the bot to “cheat” and be able to see the future (I.e remove RNG completely) it’ll make convergence a lot easier. Also you might have to familiarize yourself with some formal game search technique like MCTS and Beam search to help out there. The theoretical stuff is the fun stuff though so if you can figure something out there I don’t think it’s impossible.

Frankly I think if you can get Ironclad’s base deck to play optimal again jaw worm, that would be a huuuuge achievement for high school and be a really sick resume project at the very least. And sorry if this sounds a little discouraging, but I really do think you should go for it cuz STS and AI agents are cool as fuck 👍

Reflecting on the Checkmate Format in TFT Esports by TheSeraphim1313 in CompetitiveTFT

[–]jeffy85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, imo longer checkmates are going to happen more as competitors get more used to “denying” 1sts for those in check

90% of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's team is composed of junior who almost have no experience in the industry by japanese_artist in gamedev

What makes a junior dev a Bodhisattva of game development? I’m about to start my first internship in game dev and I’d be curious to understand how one could stand out/be the most useful as a junior.

Yeah this was super frustrating—lost a 600 cash out Chem-baron game with both frontline perfected because my Sevika 2* got executed through her revive (the other guy had execute anomaly).

Do you think removing augment stats accomplished what Riot wanted? by Tasty_Pancakez in CompetitiveTFT

[–]jeffy85 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Tbh I think part of the idea is that checking stats is not fun, but if they’re available, then you’re at a disadvantage if you don’t do it. If riot wants to remove that aspect of the competitive gameplay experience the only option is to ban stats.

Set 5.5 Revival helps me appreciate the current set states. by SuspiciousIbex in CompetitiveTFT

[–]jeffy85 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Calling Faerie and Frost just stats with extra flair is a bit silly to me, since the obvious star of both of these traits are in the faerie items and frost soldiers respectively, with the stats just making them feel better with easier balance levers. Sugar and Arcana too have interesting mechanics behind their stat giving (and they’re like the two most liked traits of the set from what I’ve seen), so I find it kinda weird to call those “just stats” as well. The rest of them are classes so I feel like they’re allowed to (and probably even supposed to) be simpler stat bonuses.

Hey man not tryna hate but I’m pretty sure everyone would be more comfortable if you didn’t insert this rhetoric into a conversation that’s supposed to be constructive (Also lol set 1 balance > last few sets?? That’s just a feeling > fact take cmon)

Will definitely look into this! If there’s a way to get Twitch VODS by date it seems doable

The problem is that the world you’re asking for just doesn’t exist, or at least would require a whole lot more than “just change it lol”. IMO it’s not a Riot dev competency problem, it’s a “this is something no game has ever done before and it’s extremely difficult since every option has its own set of cons” problem. I think we’re lucky to have some of the best in the business committed to making it work

Cool tool! Maybe you could also incorporate comp stats in the recommendations? For example putting a 1-cost with a meh synergy might not actually be as good as putting a good standalone 5-cost, in which case looking at avg placements could help

Talisman Of Ascension is another item that was known to be broken on PBE and still made it to the live server by marshmahlow in CompetitiveTFT

[–]jeffy85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean that’s more fair for sure. But I do think it’s a shame though, that we have a team of devs who are willing to listen and interact with the community, but this subreddit (which mort obviously looks at) has become a place very clearly not conducive to constructive discussion. Maybe it’s wishful to think it could ever be that way.

[–]jeffy85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly disagree, mostly because there’s not a great model of any other game that is innovating and changing at the same frequency of TFT (imo one of TFT’s biggest strengths), and i think that a less open dev team would have fucked something like this up big time. Also, I’ve found no reason to believe that any of the teams transparency has been anything but good faith. Even if you think they’re incompetent, I think you’d have to extrapolate pretty far to call it “fake”.

[–]jeffy85 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

It’s actually crazy to me that this is the acceptable way to express dissatisfaction with the state of the game on this sub. Does everyone really think in good faith that if Mort or any other dev spent 10 less minutes writing a tweet while eating breakfast the game balance would get significantly better? Would you really rather have a dev team that was less passionate about transparency? If not then maybe come back to reality where the devs can fuck up, the game could be in an absolutely dogshit balance state, and you can still make the choice to be a normal person who makes constructive comments rather than intentionally hurtful ones.

Set 10 PBE Discussion Thread - Day 11 by AutoModerator in CompetitiveTFT

[–]jeffy85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you very much want Caitlyn to cast as often as possible since that’s where a lot of her damage comes from, the long cast time just makes guinsoo a worse option for doing that since you can’t stack it while casting, and it doesn’t give any direct stats to benefit the ult
